THANK YOU, Zepla, for speaking your honest thoughts on the quality of the msq so far. Your critique was word-for-word to my description of how this story fell short. Hamfisted, over-reliant on tropes, bad pacing, and dull. While it does get better, I don't think the writing is ever 'good' in this expansion. There are good moments where something was done right, but it's so few and far between. There's a lot of plot holes, exposition dumbs, constant 'tell, don't show', there's inconsistencies, the exact same message is preached every 4 lines and characters forget things that happened not 5 minutes ago. There were a few moments where you have flashbacks to previous expansions, and I got whiplash from those realizing this is the same game. I will at least say the art, music, dungeons and trials are all amazing. Despite my disinterest in this msq, these things made the expansion still worth doing.

Wuk Lamat's plot armor is thicker than ours, and we can raise from party wipes. The story was so forced, and it kinda would make me think that a person that believes in manifesting destiny wrote it. Wuk Lamat's horoscope told her she needed to party today and she just got lucky that it coincided with the objective. I think in her case the saying "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" fits her the best. I have problems with Koana too, as he seems to just want to abandon traditions for the sake of progress, and that is bad, because you dont know why those traditions are there and how they could be important, for instance this part of the story. His solution could've easily led to relying on his solution, because he failed to discover the root cause that led to the problem in the first place. It is kinda like treating lead poisoning but failing to get the patient to stop using their pewter glass. But he is still the best candidate in this story.

I’m a writer, and a massive fan of the lore of this game, and the entire msq this time around is more contrived than a high school creative writing project. The plot, the character development, the conflicts, all of it. The music, setting, fight design, all the rest of it is top notch-I’m thoroughly enjoying endgame, and viper is extremely fun, but my god, that story was cringe.

Don't let the white knights intimidate you, who feel the need to defend everything Enix releases at all costs and want to silence any critic. Just say it like you feel and don't bend over backwards just to appease a few simps. That's the problem with the FF community. They can't handle criticism of their beloved game and constantly see everything through rose-colored glasses, but undeserved praise definitely won't make the game better.

You're right, that is exactly the point of pretty much the whole plotline -- working with the naive, sheltered Wuk Lamat to mold her into a wizened leader. I think it's the fact that the player is forced to support Wuk Lamat when she's at her worst gives people a bad first impression, and they end up more annoyed that they aren't supporting someone they think is more competent instead of being interested in guiding Wuk Lamat because she's well-intentioned.

While I agree, I also think the story is to show that none of the claimants are ready for the job. Koana is shown to care for the people's lives but not for their culture or ways of life. I thought it was pretty clear early on that the best choice of the four was Wuk Lamat with Koana as an advisor. None of them are ready for the throne, but if it was going to be one of the four Wuk Lamat seems to be the best choice.

Lyse has roughly 60% less words/lines than Wuk Lamat. And get this if you played FFXIV before you would know at least she has history with the WOL so some of that 1/4 of the dialog she has as Wuk is somewhat justified. Stormblood doesn't even remotely compare to this.

@@MrMittenshasatophat The entire premise of the expansion from the start is supporting her bid for leadership, which is not what stormblood was about so yes, you're right it doesn't even remotely compare. There's no merit to the "omg one of the npcs talked too much" LMFAO like what?
@RanDum8
@RanDum8 Ай бұрын
@@Disconnected66 There's alot of merit in discussing too much dialogue for 1 NPC. For example, the NPC in question has the most dialogue in the game, over double the lines of the next nearest NPC. As many people have pointed out already the character is written poorly. That's not because she's loud and a bit of a meme character, alot of people will like or dislike that based on personal preference. She's poorly written because she goes through no journey and is still handed powerup and "rewards" (don't want to spoil things) which come accross as unearned to the player as she never struggles she never really does anything of impact alot of talking about love and friendship and then boom I win; The writers poor pacing is what causes this. They are happy to have lengthy cutscenes where just characters stand there and info dumb lore onto the player, telling the player about things instead of showing them with gameplay. Then when it comes to any of the emotional and developmental story beats, they will glase over it comepletely. I'm not sure if it was due to the graphics update eating up budget, so they didn't have the animators to spare for cutscenes, but close to 95% of all cutscenes in the game are literally static dialogue scenes. Cutscenes in a game from a narrative perspective should be surgical strikes short and precise. They should contain either action in almost all of them or there emphasis a particular emtional/developmental. Cutscenes shouldn't be used to monologue lore at a player, especially when they are constantly repeating the same plot point or even doing flashbacks to previous cuscenes that the player went through a couple hours ago. To give an example, in FF8 you beat the boss at the top of the statalite dish, the player is then chased through the town by a giant spider bot, you as the player are running from this thing, getting in fights trying to escape, you feel connected, there are 2 cutscenes, one when the player moves from one screen to the next the bot has a 4s cuscene smashing a car as it run, then another roughly 10s cutscene at the end when you jump onto your ship to get away. this is excellent use of cutscenes to highten the story but leaving the bulk of the actions to the players. If this was done by theses writers, there would be no gameplay section, you would leave the satalite tower, and the a cutscene of you running through the town would play and then end with you getting on the boat, then while on the boat you would have 6 different 1m cutscenes where the character would speak about the escape 6 times to each character talking about the exact same plot points that have just been covered; Without the gameplay there's not really a game, you're watching a movie with extra steps, and it's a rather boring story where everyone stands still and monologues. Purely from a writing perspective, the MSQ is bad, bordering on terrible it's juvenile in it's attempt to tell a story. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant in this regard.

100% agree about the hanu float fixing the problem feeling contrived. However, my counter argument is that this is how ffxiv has always been. The first example that comes to mind is that Chai Nuzz just so happens to be the ex president of the golem making company and has the perfect knowledge we need to get to Mt. Gulg. Another would be that emet and hythlo just so happen to be at the exact spot and time that elidibus shoots us back to from the CT. Dont get me wrong, i love both of those things. But i personally think its unfair to call this a dawntrail problem
@moomgmh
@moomgmh Ай бұрын
I agree. Contrived plot points like that are literally all over the place in FF14, even in the "good" expansions. I think Zep is more aware of these things this time around since she went into it knowing it had a mixed reception, the story is super slow at this point, and she already wasn't liking Wuk Lamat. Just for example, what was Elidibus somehow still being conscious within the tower with the ability to send us back to the specific time and place where we get to experience the unfolding of the events that kick off the entire story, only to be seen and made tangible by the one guy that we happen to already know & who has the means to do so, if not a series of ultra-convenient-to-the-narrative events? The only difference is nobody batted an eye then because we were in the middle of the climax of the story, and not building a parade float for rainbow bird people.

Big problem is that it all happens to one person all at once. Meets a sponsor immediately when entering Pelu area where she needs money, with Hanu suggests something nonsensical that turns out to be the solution, meets a goldsmith right before entering an area where she needs a goldsmith, there's much more of these to come but I won't say since this video doesn't go any further. These challenges are supposed to help her grow, but when everything happens by luck then there's not really much room to grow.
@DukeofSpook.
@DukeofSpook. Ай бұрын
@@Kittzu My thoughts are that Wuk Lamat's whole thing at the beginning is that she has a good heart but is naïve. I think for her story, it makes sense to have her meet a character that would like someone like her and for both of them to help each other grow to face their fears. Regarding the goldsmith, I didn't feel like it was forced because his story started on the boat. And then when we see him again, it follows what we learned about him earlier in the story. And it didn't really have to be a goldsmith, just any DoH or DoL character. I enjoyed them connecting these bits of the story, but if you didn't that is totally fair! I said in a different comment: Regarding the early challenges, i thought it was pretty clear that the point of these quests was to show that wuk lamat is not fit to rule in her current state. I never got the impression that this was supposed to be showing us why shes a good ruler at this point in the story. You're right the games always relied on serendipity way too much. I think the difference this time is that the overall writing is to a lower standard and the gameplay is almost none existent for several hours, so it becomes far far more apparent. To continue your paralell to shadowbringers, we get our first dungeon about 1 hour into the MSQ in Shadowbringers, in DT it's between 4-9 hours of heavy dialogue before you get your first dungeon, depending on what you picked at the beginning. When you slow the game down that much and you don't put in any other gameplay, you're holding a mangnifying glass to your story and if it can't hold up to scrutiny then the whole thing crumbles.

The funniest part is how they keep repeating the lines of "you excused contrivances before" when we had far more investment in say, Shadowbringers or when said contrivances were called out just as bad before like with Urianger and Estinian randomly showing up to save the day in Stormblood. I'm not sure if Zepla was just tilted by the Hanu quests (very understandable lmao), but I was really surprised by Zepla saying the Fonjeantaine quest felt contrived/forced. There have been way bigger on the nose forced/contrived moments in other expansions such as: 1. Chai Nuzz just so happens to be the ex president of the golem making company and has the perfect knowledge we need to get to Mt. Gulg. 2. Emet and Hythlo just so happen to be at the exact spot and time that elidibus shoots us back to from the CT 3. Time perfectly flows at the same time as the source right as we get to the first. 4. No one trying to heal Haurchefant, even if the WoL is a healer (before the retcon). 5. G'raha summoning the souls of our companions to the first, so they can be there for the story. 6. All of the races in Ultima Thule having problems that exactly mirror the struggles our scions faced in their stories. I could go on and on, and don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater of any of these things; I love the stories of these expansions. But the Fonjeantaine quest was less than or equally as contrived as these and was relatable for a lot of people. Lots of people feel inadequate and get caught up in comparing themselves to others. Yes it connected to Wuk Lamat having similar feelings, but I feel like it's a bit disingenuous to complain about this in a vacuum while ignoring that ffxiv has done this all the time since ARR.

I think the main issue was that the whole Fonjeantaine "arc" was that we met him, helped him out, and then 30 minutes later we were dragged to the ocean shore to reminisce profoundly about our time together and learn that he's ready to do what's best for Tuliyollal as if he's been here for years. And then Bruk Evu randomly shows up to guide us to role quests. In my opinion, this whole part was just awfully paced and not well thought out.

@@Dranni21312 I didn't find it strange personally, but that's fair. He didn't say what he said out of feeling like he's been there for years imo, more so as a "I finally have committed myself to a new start, and I will do everything I can to support it. I'm gonna do what I can to not let it go to shit like my time in Ul'dah did." Which, helping Wuk Lamat win was in direct alignment of what he wanted for his future. Not to mention he wanted to repay the favor of Wuk Lamat/us helping find the courage to have that new start in the first place. I didn't see it as reminiscing but more as "you did this for me when you didn't have to, and i appreciated it. please let me repay you for what you did for me." I will say this: dont read opinions before you actually play yourself. Personally I also thought the start was boring (for me clearly the weakest part), but it got much better after that slow fetching start. I managed to avoid all reviews, I had absolutelly no idea the story was getting so much hate and I was quite surprised because I personally had a lot of fun despite some obvious flaws. I had the feeling to go on a great adventure full of new lore and things I had to learn. I enjoyed been a guardian, very much like in FF10 (with a few recognisable references here and there) and not been the center of the attention for once. Wuk is naive (which is the all point I think) and I can see why some people dislike her but that didnt bother me that much. The zones are beautiful. Dungeons, trials, solo duties are fantastic and so is the music (maybe despite the first city, jazz is not really fitting the theme), writing could have been better (clearly the quality of Natsuko Ishikawa's writing is missing) but overall it was much better the second half. To me it is of Stromblood level of quality. Some people truly exagerate, and it feels as if people's hate feed on each others. Is it the best MSQ we've had, no, by far, but is it as bad as some make it? absolutely not.
@BaghNakh1
@BaghNakh1 Ай бұрын
I feel the same. I'm still going through the MSQ (already on the second half) and I enjoyed the first half tbh. Sure it wasn't like wow the most amazing thing ever, but I feel like the first half is pretty much the "summer vacation" part of the MSQ, where we finally get to rest from being the main character for once and take a well deserved rest, well the "rest" being us just chilling as a support character for Wuk Lamat but I'm ok with that. It's something I find very weird because the plot is about us helping Wuk Lamat, so it makes sense that she's in the spotlight and it feels like people think it would've been a better idea to have the WoL "carry" Wuk Lamat through the entire competition while she's just cheering us from a corner which to me makes no sense at all from a narrative perspective. Now sure CBU3 could've made the things a bit more fun while keeping the exact same narrative of us being just a support character in Wuk Lamat's history and I agree, but in terms of narrative exclusively, I think the first half is fine. I've seen so many people saying that they didn't liked DT cuz they expected that DT would top off EW and that is such a weird take for me because the whole "Final Days" plot is pretty much over, from the very start that it was told to us that this is a new beggining, probably ARR should be a closer comparison to DT in terms of their place, both being the start of a new story.

One thing I disagree with Zepla on here is that I think it is extremely in character for the WoL to just let the enemy walk away. Remember we just LET Gaius power up the Ultima Weapon after beating him back in ARR! There are countless more examples throughout the story where the WoL just stands there and let's the enemy walk away. It's what we do, we only give chase if the enemy is leaving to immediately attack someone else. In other words, we usually only fight the bad guys if and when the bad guys are ready to fight us.

@@Lord_Sunday You're too blinded by your dislike of the character to see the development that the game is literally beating you over the head with. There are like 6 scenes in the span of 2 hours at the beginning of Wuk Lamat brooding because of her insecurity/lack of confidence and feeling like she has to do it all alone. Without spoiling anything directly, by the end she is incredibly assertive and at a point in the story around the Lv. 95 mark she literally could not possibly make her new perspective on relying on other people more clear. It's totally fine not to like the character or the story or whatever. But to say she didn't change or develop is just objectively not true. Regarding the WoL not fighting Bakool Ja Ja: We're not really here to fight dickheads/other claimants, we're here to help Wuk Lamat grow. And even beyond that, the WoL has been extremely passive throughout the entire story lol. We watch Gaius do his 20 minute monologue while he walks over to the ultima weapon, climbs up the ultima weapon, gets in the ultima weapon, then fights us. xD And even just in Endwalker, we stood still and watched the Satrap get eaten without lifting a finger and stood still while the Endsinger fucked all of our friends. We don't even pull out our weapon until they're all teleported away lol. So again, I'd say this is a ffxiv thing rather than a Dawntrail thing.

The scale of the two examples you brought up are crazy different. One is from the first expansion, a time when we all had very low expectations for our character's agency in cutscenes. It is completely ridiculous for sure and the WOL should've done something, but again, at that time it was just par for the course. The endwalker example is also super dumb, but is a quick fleeting moment that you can forget easily. Its just a guy getting stomped while our character does nothing. Definitely dumb, but doesn't impact the story a ton. And the Endsinger example is weird because everyone was fighting her and protecting us, maybe it was a little out of place but it wasn't anything like the example you gave from ARR. I agree that all cases of this are dumb, but the MSQ had been getting better at this over time and took a massive step back in DT. Major story moments happen where our character could and should do something but instead we just stand there. Not just one time, but multiple major story moments do this. And I think the playerbase reacting negatively is a good thing. I would like this to stop entirely, and the only way that happens is if people voice their concerns. Whats so wrong with that?
@DukeofSpook.

@@slashthedancingwalrus1510 Nothing wrong with voicing your concerns at all! I just want people to look at the bigger picture of ffxiv instead of jumping on the Dawntrail hate train. Yes, it's an issue. But it's never been a Dawntrail issue. As I said, please voice your concerns, so the devs have a better idea of what players want going forward. I hope 8.0 is less decisive for people 💙 I simply disagree that the points I brought up and the issues in Dawntrail are crazy different. The Satrap dying had way more impact than the WoL not fighting Bakool Ja Ja at the Hanu village. It was a plot device for Vrtra's growth, so the WoL had to stand still and watch it happen. Whereas, not fighting Bakool Ja Ja was ironically a plot device for his growth. If we whooped his ass right there, his character arc wouldn't have happened. Which again, I'm not really complaining because these things don't really bother me that much. But for those that are bothered by these things, I just ask that they look at every expansion with a real critical lens and not rose-tinted glasses. The truth is that most people played the old expansions a long time ago, so it's hard to fully remember the bad in our current brains without really looking at the source material.

something that is confusing me about people saying the story is bad and that they feel it does not center around the wol is that to me the entire games story is centered around the people and cultures of different areas and learning about them. sure every expantion has some big plot but the moment to moment of every story has been learning about the people that inhabit the world. Examples: Endwalker you start with the people of thavneir then garlemald then elpis. Shadowbringers is entirely about the struggles the people in the first are facing and how the different groups dealt with the greif of their dying world. also every character has had flaws they have had to overcome to be better but for some reason people act like wuk lomat is unbearable. she obviously shows she loves her people and once she realizes her flaws she starts working to fix them so why does she get hate but the twins didnt when they were niave in garlemald. it feels like wuk lamat and the dawntrail story is being held to a standard that others were not so that they have something to complain about because the actual dungens etc. are hard to critique unlike previous expantions.

Yeah, the ffxiv story has never really been "about the WoL". It's always been about where we're going and the people we meet (Ishgard, Doma, Ala Mhigo, Thavnair, Garlemald, etc.). We do get some big plot moments for our character, but it's never really about us at the end of the day. The issue isn't that the story doesn't revolve around the WoL, it's that the WoL is relegated to being a side character and is not utilized in any way other than simple tasks until we do dungeons/trials. It's actually what makes questing with Lyse and Zero obnoxious to some people as well. The character that the DT story revolves around (Wuk Lamat) is also unbearable for the fact that she's extremely irresponsible, naive, and impractical, she makes decisions without much thought, is expected to be a leader and knows pretty much nothing about the people of Tural (even Erinville, who has been in sharlayan for a long time according to the story, knows more about Tural's people than Wuk Lamat does it seems), and we're forced to work with her; we can't even choose to help Koana, who is much more practical, intelligent, and level-headed. It doesn't help that her voice actor couldn't seem to portray any emotions other than sad, upbeat, and upbeat but a little angry. Also, Wuk Lamat does not improve on her character flaws beyond learning more about the Turali people. She stays irresponsible, naive, and impractical throughout the whole story and even steals our credit at the end.

The whole point of following Wuk Lamat as the protagonist of this story is to experience her as the well-intentioned and eager yet naive, uncultured, and woefully unprepared underdog (undercat?) and watch her growth as she experiences the cultures and ways of the people of Tural and learns to accept her shortcomings rather than feel sorry for herself all the time. I keep listening to people gripe so hard about how derpy and naive Wuk Lamat is, and I’m like - yeah, that is the whole point. Does she ever become the perfect leader for Tural? No. Even after significant growth, she is still young and certain events thrust her into leadership before she is fully qualified. But that is often how it goes for young leaders. Listen, I’m not saying everyone needs to think this story is perfect or even excellent, but good grief the salt is genuinely toxic. We just came off an expansion where the WoL literally flew to the edge of existence and saved the entire universe from immediate annihilation. They had to significantly dial back the stakes in this expansion after coming off of that if they wanted FF14 to not become extremely overblown. I wish people would just take a breath and enjoy this story for what it is and offer more constructive feedback when necessary. This fatalistic view that Dawntrail has just completely lost the plot and has brought FF14 down is just not the case at all.

She had no idea that the holding the festival would do what it did. I would not say that the msq is bad. But it's not that centered arround our WoL. That's a generel problem for most players I guess. Also Wuk Lamat is not a bad character. But it's too much Wuk Lamat here and Wuk Lamat there. Most cutszenes don't show our WoL doing something. The idea to let us (the WoL) be some kind of mentor this time is good. But also as a mentor we could stay more in a main character focus in 'our' story. One example: I made a new Viper glam and was ready to fight against XXXXX! And then..., I could not do the fight with my character, what I was looking forward to. No, I had to fight as Wuk Lamat. :/ For me personally it was 'that' moment when it really felt too much for me. It's somehow sad because she is not a bad character. But the way it is presented makes many people hate her. One week after I did the first zones some things came to my mind. For example..., why did not WE try to catch an Alpaka? Why just Wuk Lamat off screen? It would have been so cool to catch one in the beginning and to use it as a mount during msq. So many times we just stand arround, doing nothing. We're not even shown much in cutscenes. I assume that this is the main problem.

Zepla rolling her eyes at the notion of forgotten origins of traditions about 30 seconds after making a reference to Mardi Gras, a celebration that has largely been divorced from its Catholic origins as a pre-Lenten feast day, is kinda funny.

Man Zepla is really struggling with the story, good she can be a negative Nancy together with Erenville. Is it so hard to understand you are hired by person A and you agreed. Then you See Person B being better than Person a at their job interview and you want to support person B instead of the one who hired you to become better? Come on. All 4 canditates show obvious flaws. Wuk at least aknowledges she has flaws and tried to compensate for it with outside help. We are a mentor in this story people are really struggling with the MSQ this time around. Also we can't just kill Bakool Ja Ja, they are an official candidate for running for President, remember they almost kicked us out of the country in the harbor because they wanted to stop outside influence for interfeering with the election? and yes wel et him walk away like we did with so Gaius in the Praetorium or Zenos in the ice wastes, we were nevcer a murder hobo, dont know why you need to complain that you dont run around killing everybody who looks at you funny. ffs

This went way beyond pointed criticism and became completely toxic. Zepla went from expressing legitimate feedback to just belly laughing at people who were sharing legitimate counterpoints she disagreed with and scrunch-facing at literally every single line of dialogue going forward, no matter how innocuous. This was very much like watching an Asmongold stream, which isn’t something I ever thought I’d say about my all time favorite FF14 content creator. And before anyone comes at me - this has nothing to do with Zepla sharing her opinions and feedback. In fact, I fully agree with criticisms of the story’s pacing and several of the plot points. It was just so toxic and disrespectfully-presented after a while.

Why should Zepla pretend to respect something she clearly scorns? You would prefer she faked expressing emotions she doesn't actually feel?

@@Zidana123 as I said explicitly in my first comment, this has nothing to do with Zepla or anyone else liking or not liking this story, or sharing their criticisms. Again, I actually agree with many of the criticisms. It has everything to do with outright laughing at the people who were sharing their own legitimate counterpoints to the criticism in chat. It became really toxic after a while.

@@nickt3176 From your comment: *"Zepla went from expressing legitimate feedback to just belly laughing at people who were sharing legitimate counterpoints she disagreed with and scrunch-facing at literally every single line of dialogue going forward, no matter how innocuous"* That's the issue you had, yes? Do you recognize that when Zepla behaves in these ways, she is showing the emotion of scorn?

@@Zidana123 I don’t understand the point you’re trying to make… are you just trying to define the word scorn? You aren’t addressing what I’m talking about. Again, I don’t care that Zepla has negative opinions or emotions about the story. I’m with Zepla as a fan whether we agree or disagree. I’m saying that this particular stream veered away from being critical and became a bit toxic toward the developers and toward the people who were presenting counterpoints to her criticism in the stream.

Having the warrior of Light as a mentor is probably like having a doctor as a parent Like 'are you on the verge of death? Is a apocalyptic force about to engulf the planet? No? Ok then I'll be over here doing bong rips with erenville and krille'

idc what anyone saids i rank Dawntrail ahead of Shadow bringer but not HW, most are claiming its like stormblood or even worst then endwalker. Dawntrail will be a perfect example on how difficult it is to be a MMO programmer. square enix listen to years of feedback to make a extended main story quest to make everything grindy and once they do. everyone complains about the MSQ being boring and not make any sense. i got DT better then SHB based on the zones looking better and the gathering mount that cost oarnge scripts.

Agreed, like yeah the writing isn't good but she took it WAY over the top. There's a balance that can be struck between hating something but still being entertaining and funny about it, she went so far over that line that the line became a dot to her. It became unpleasant to watch.

Yeah, i haven't been bothered by the people stating their criticisms for the story, but this was pretty rough. Really bummed out that I won't be able to enjoy watching her playthrough like I was hoping. :( I've never seen her analyze any other part of the story like she did in the lvl 90-91 quests. Kinda got the impression that she was going in looking for that due to the criticisms from others. Really curious how she would've felt if she played day 1, but none of us can ever really know. I wish streamers would play day 1 for this reason, so we could get their thoughts/feelings without them listening to what others have already said. Regardless if they love it or hate it, I just want more authentic thoughts from just them
