You know I’ve “quit wow” several times throughout the years with my longest attempt in wod when I stopped for a year and came back and the game happened to not change much (lol like no updates). However, this time there’s just something different. Before I had simply lost interest with the game from having played so long. Now, theres not only that same feeling but there’s an added level of disgust with regards to not just the game but the company as a whole. Not to mention the design just having gone a horrible direction (that is to design the game around competitive mechanics around every aspect and not just pvp which was and is a mistake). So, for the first time I haven’t bothered with the pre-order and I’m just not following dragonflights development. At this point I don’t even care if dragonflight is an all around good. The company doesn’t deserve success they deserve to be shut down and for the first time I’ve finally stopped following wow news and watching wow content updates. I’m finally just free.

People who get addicted to MMOs get addicted to the social commitment. An easy way to get people to quit, is to make them think that the game is “dead” or that very few people play it and more are quitting every day. Or if they are in a guild and the guild falls apart they’re also likely to quit because of that. However, playing any game without a social commitment or without as strong of a social commitment will never quite scratch the same itch. From a mechanical point of view, I’d honestly say Guild Wars 2 is one of the best MMORPGs out there. It’s combat and open world are fantastic. It has very flexible and robust build craft with dozens of viable builds. It has definitely the best jumping puzzles of any MMORPG out there. Yet, it’s also made specifically so you don’t feel committed to playing it constantly for any reason. There’s absolutely zero FOMO to GW2. This causes a lot of MMO players to not want to play it at all.

p much, how people ignore all the good things just because the game have no progression power that keep people grinding, just make me confuse. The reason i stay the way out from most mmo or online game is because what I want and what this no lifers want simply dont match, I want gears to not be bs to get and progression isnt chore bs that I need to do for months, yet online games mostly just want to cater to those no lifers
@louiskusters9452
@louiskusters9452 2 жыл бұрын
There's a difference between FOMO and just generally stuff to do in the game. WoW operates on FOMO: if you don't grind you just fall behind and can't do content. In FFXIV there isn't really FOMO. You can catch up very easily. But FF14 has a ton of stuff to do. I never played GW2 long enough, so not sure how much stuff to do there is in that game. But what I did play way back (many years ago) I did enjoy. But FF14 will always feel like home, I the patches never really dissapoint even if I just play for maybe one month during certain patches. I generally rotate between FFXIV, path of exile and then one or two single player games. It's a nice rhythm IMO.
@xxJing
@xxJing 2 жыл бұрын
@@louiskusters9452 End game in GW2 is like an amusement park, lots of things to do with very little external motivation to do anything. There’s basically no vertical progression so you don’t really need to do A before you can do B before you can do C etc. Everything is more or less available to you at any time you want to do it. This lack of structure makes it really hard to get that satisfaction you get from progressing as a group.
@TheSuperRatt

@@xxJing I dunno, it sounds kinda like you have an addictive personality? FOMO is always, one hundred percent a negative. It's honestly why I quit and still loathe Destiny 2, and hate some of the choices WoW's made. If there's a ton of cool content I'll never be able to experience/unlock just because I entered the scene late? Kills my interest entirely.

Here goes my scientific analysis. WoW isn't a Black Hole. It's actually a massive super giant star. FF14 is the black hole that revolves around WoW. With every cycles that FF14 goes thru, FF14 siphon little bits of matter from WoW. And occasionally when FF14 siphon too much matter, it becomes a Quazar which expels matter back out. In between these two massive celestial objects, there are planets with a long elliptical orbit. When those planets gets closer to those two object, it picks up some of those matters either from WoW or expelled matter from Quazar.

What got me hooked on Wow was the immersion into the world, i.e., the imagery and the music, especially the music in the startup areas. That was magic. Each subsequent xpac meant less and less immersion and, for me anyway, less of a leveling challenge. I finally got burned out in BFA and only stuck around because of classic (with which I have since gotten burned out as well because P2W). I'm trying FFXIV but what I'm looking for is world immersion and FFXIV is not doing that as much for me, at least not yet. I'm waiting to see what Ashes of Creation turns out to be. He's right though. I'll probably go back to classic WotLK for a while. You folks talked about it being a black hole but your remark about Wow and FFXIV being two sides of the same black hole made me think of a worm hole. One side is WoW and the other side is FFXIV, For me there's also a third side, SWTOR, which I enjoy because I can actually be the hero of the story instead of the 'champion' who only does fetch and carry of silken tp for some dwarf who's stuck in an outhouse in Silithus. Thank you again for the chuckle. Your laughter is always infectious.

With FFXIV it is more story immersion than world in line with the franchise it spawned from. That being said, I think people playing FFXIV that were fans of the FF franchise before experience world immersion more as they see the easter eggs and tributes to the games they already played. The story though is phenomenal so if story isn't your jam then it may be less of an experience for you. It depends where you are in the MSQ as well though as the subsequent areas of the xpacs are far more immersive than the ARR areas, and especially hitting Shadowbringers and Endwalker. If it ends up not being for you though that is fine, different strokes for different folks as they say. Edit: ShadowBRINGERS

I think there's a big difference in what I see for the black holes of WoW and XIV. People "never quit" the game because they like it and want to play it and talk with friends. I have to put that part in quotes, as most of my friends list hasn't logged in for several years. I can't quit for too long or I lose my house, but I also use breaks to play other games. On the WoW side, I see so many people just hate the game yet can't let go of it for whatever reason. And to a lot of them, it's their only game. It's an entirely different situation.

Not all content is meant for everyone. I don't like relic grind, I don't like Eureka/Bozja. It's okay. I have "nothing to do" while waiting for the next raid tier, as I have exhausted the content I'm interested in (and can find people to do). And, once again, it's okay to not do everything !
@Shayera01

@@DridriKon Say it louder for the people in the back. I think that when many folks - not even necessarily most, but many - say they have "nothing to do" in XIV, they mean they have run out of things that they LIKE to do. Example: I'm here for the MSQ and MSQ-tangential lore (like raids and role quests). I don't do roulettes, hard content, Gold Saucer, PotD/HoH, relics, none of it. So after every new patch, once I'm done with the lore-heavy stuff, I'm "done" until more comes out. My time between patches is spent hanging out with my friends and occasionally helping our sprouts. :D

I've been playing GW2 casually. I always play something that is not the most popular since I find it limits the player as a customer. There's a reason Blizz never felt the need to listen or improve - players made a choice to play no other games. I mean, the vibe I seem to get as that Yoshi P wouldn't have gotten where he was without the team of similar minded people he has, but I do think Squenix attributes the success to him, and kind of trusts them with the game as long as he's around. That's the issue with Blizzard, they got in the habit of too much corporate oversight, not enough letting the studio do their job and create a good game.

the "not a lot to do between patches" problem doesn't exist in GW2. And the reason for that is that GW2 is a game first and everything else second. FFXIV is super reward driven. Every thing you do in the game is for a mount or a piece of glam or story progrsssion AND content is always linear and is always done with one solution. I hope this gets adressed to some extent with the new dungeons. FFXIV needs more stuff like POTD or CC. Stuff that is just fun to play. Even PROPER jumping puzzles would be nice for a change. GW2 has an elaborate jumping puzzle for every map. Sometimes even 2. And every single one of them is miles better than Kugane tower. If there really was absolutely nothing to do, you can always do a JP. Or seasonal events is another example. GW2 has an even going right now, that has 2 separate areas with a plethora of activities and, yes, even rewards. I could go on about the great stuff GW2 has to offer. I feel like 14 is wasting so much of it's potential. rant over

I think this is the start of their "just fun" content patches. At least I'm hoping. With the sanctuary and these criterion dungeons, I'm hoping we get more unique content. The constant events FF has is awesome but once you have all the items, what can you do? Just sell your rewards for money? That's nice but it isn't enough to push many others. The PvP is also just dumb fun now, which is also very good news.

Sorry dude but gw2 gets so repetitive and boring after a while. It’s not a themepark mmo but after a while you’re just done with it. Playing FFXIV and WoW releases a lot of dopamine in your brain due to accomplishments and rewards you get. GW2 is not nearly as hardcore in the pve raiding scene, so while clearing is nice, you didn’t spend 100s of hours to clear so the impact isn’t as big. That is why Gw2 is a lot healthier to play casually while the other two are black holes due to being themeparks. It’s fun to go back to gw2 once in a while to have some fun in WvW, as your gear is still valid due to horizontal progression, but I couldn’t see myself play this game for a long time in sequence.

@@_EncieI was just making a statement rather than a counterpoint. That being said, though, jumping puzzles is really not that good of a downtime thing to do, even though the jumping puzzles in GW2 are quite well designed and fun to do. I've got really bad motion sickness so I loathe exploration type games as they make me feel sick. So yea forget me ever getting 100% on that map completion lol. That being said, I enjoy isolated minigames the way FFXIV does it the most. You can spend hours in the gold saucer and the best part is that I don't get motion sick playing the games. Though those get boring too eventually lol. GW2 is the perfect game to play on-and-off, it's fun but not addicting (unless it's pvp, that shit was hella addicting). Have been playing again currently, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do as I used to be avid with WvW and PvP. PvE confuses me, idk what I'm supposed to do :'). Just been doing the story but so far the personal story is kinda meh.

That is why all MMO players are looking for the next one. If you want current well developed content then you do only have two choices. WoW and FFXIV. Every year I starve for the next one to come out which is a never ending cycle. That is why there is soo much hype for any new MMO. Like now everyone I know is biting their nails waiting for Throne of Liberty that is supposed to release in the 4th quarter. It will be overhyped and then when it does finally release it will most likely fail our expectations. The expectations that it will be just like WoW or FFXIV from when we were teens or college kids with no responsibilities. We all got indoctrinated by these two games and it is a cult where membership can never be cancelled, well if you still play MMO's that is. I know right now we have couple of titles out there like Lost Ark but that is nothing like WoW or FFXIV. It won't draw people in for another 5 years like these two games will continue to do. Two Black Holes. Nice analogy!

I love ff14, but I feel like I can't enjoy it enough without putting in more time than I can afford. So no, I don't regret quitting. It's the same with every MMO I've loved. That's why I'm so eager for Ashes of Creation; not only does it look great, but by the time it comes out I'll probably be retired.

Honestly, I quit both WoW and FFXIV. I can't stand either of them, once I realized I was playing 14 just to play something I couldn't keep going. They both lack the magic the world that existed in older MMOs. Everything being instance based, the open world being nothing but filler, and no real reason to interact with other players.

Couldn't disagree more with Arthars., there are plenty of MMO's that are better than WOW out there. I think what he really means is "there is nothing good enough to justify me investing my time in it rather than the game I already sunk time into".

I haven't unsubbed from FF14 a single time in the 7 years I have played for. I might take a couple weeks off and played other games (single player only) but I have never been dissatisfied with anything in the game, just a bit burned out from capping my weekly tomestones for multiple weeks in a row

So I QUIT vanilla wow back in the day for my GF at the time because it was taking so much time. but a decade later Classic pulled me back in for 3 months "till a teammate/hommie" had a mental breakdown at the same time as asmon and belular so i became a "WoW refugee" solo dropping into FF14 after literal years of thinking looks cool but may be boring/weeby/whatever. 1000 hrs later.....wait what? "1000 HRS LATER!!!!" i've beaten all FF14 content got 3 characters to max level all classes to jobs and all crafting to 30-50 and thought. Holy crap what happened. so i took a break.... and immediately started SWOTOR... Help i'm officially an MMO Andy!!😭😭😭

Eh I don't really agree, You can for sure play other mmo's and not ffxiv or wow. I played so many MMOs in the past and only started/tried ffxiv and wow after 12 years of playing MMOs. ffxiv and wow are also very similar, they are both tap target, global cooldown, stroy driven theme park pve games. There is a completely different side to MMOs that is pvp focused sandbox-y games like archeage, new world and bdo. Also there are so many people who only play eso, or runescape, or as mentioned before bdo. And of course the people who would watch Arthars stream will agree with him because they are watching a ffxiv content creator, so they relate to that.
