The sad reality of modern mmos is that mmorpg’s original player base grew up and had to live their lives and no new players came in to keep the genre alive. There’s nothing wrong with it tho. Just how life works.

I just play GW2. To me it has perfect community between 2012 and 2022 i can maybe think 2 or 3 morons that i have encountered so the community is far more tolerable than wow has when your ignore list is full in less than few hours if you log in. It has WvW that even with its problems blows wows piece of crap open world pvp and battlegrounds out the window mostly because i have always loved large scale BG's in wow 40 man BG's have been in such a sad state for over a decade that its not even funny anymore. GW2 i don't have to grind 100 hours to get pvp gear so i can finally actually play bg's for fun all i have to do is make new character do the 2 min tutorial and then go mist (the pvp lobby area) set my build and go do some pvp and i never have to grind some bullshit pve reputation crap in order to do pvp. GW2 also imo has the best open world that to me is and should be the main selling point of MMO hell people still actively do world bosses from starting low level areas because they scale and give you stuff that you need for achievements and legendary item crafting. Nobody but mount farmers do WoW's old world bosses and even if someone desides to do them they just oneshot kill them because there is no real scaling at all. WoW to me has one of the most underused and sad state open world i have ever seen in any game i have ever played since i picked up my tac-II controller back in 80's Also the very best part is in GW2 i still have characters from 2012 that still have the gear (mostly) that i got 10 years ago and i never had to replace it because some bullshit patch or expansion that gave new raid or dungeons with better gear. My time in WoW and all its clone type games made me really hate gear reset and grind.

Ff11 before they raised the level cap above 75 was amazing. As he says, every drop of sweat you put into the game mattered. You were building your character across years, not patches. Nothing came out that in the expansions that completely invalidated the last expansion. Everything mattered. Everything culminated.

Prepping several days to attempt to fight Maat to raise your level cap was stressful and rewarding at the same time, or the adrenaline rush of trying the solo level 20 summon unlock fights as a summoner with just carbuncle... all these took time, effort, and could easily end in failure, but those pay offs kept you elevated for weeks.... also 1000% agree the game was as its peak enjoyment for me when the cap at 75.

I've definitely been yearning for a new MMO experience for quite a long time. I started looking for that new experience about the time WoW Cata came out, eventually found FF14 and use that as my primary mmo. But even though I still play FF14, I just want that new experience from something. We've been playing what is essentially a reskinned version of the same MMO for nearly 15 years. What few games actually do something a little bit more innovative usually don't offer much beyond that elevator pitch. I'm not just talking about their depth of content but their ability to hold onto players beyond the initial "wow" factor. Unfortunately the current MMO structure has become so imbedded that it becomes difficult to think of ways to design another mmo that isn't just "think WoW...but special feature." Lost Ark is "Diablo, but MMO with anime hotness". FF14 is "WoW but catgirls and story." Generalizing but that is kind of my point. Looking for that experience that is truly unique that isn't emulated elsewhere. I don't want an MMO that kills the other MMOs. I want an MMO that offers an experience I can't get elsewhere. I don't want to play these hotbar MMO's for the 30th time.

I never got into mmos because the fetch quest theme park grind just never appealed to me. I always wished mmos felt more 'alive' somehow, maybe Ashes of Creation might do that. On the other hand, a fully fleshed out Valheim MMO might also be the tits. Fucking around and terraforming the world and building shit just appeals to basic human instinct i think
@eirikrfranklin5284
@eirikrfranklin5284 Жыл бұрын
you want an mmo with it's own Soul basically is what you're asking. I really believe Guild Wars 1 was great in terms of this. Not like WoW or anything other game out there, but unfortunately it was also so different from the others, it was it's own Demise. You're very right though, most of the MMO's are being reskinned, but still the fetch or kill quests, it's difficult to really do something that hasn't been done in one game or another already.... even more difficult is finding the playerbase that hasn't gone from say WoW Quest leveling then PVP focus to Guild Wars 2 and dumping countless hours into the PVE story and grinding out Skyscales. Tbh the sad reality here is we are getting older, and have seen most types of games and their limitations, and the awe and wow factor after years of having seen it all just isn't cutting it anymore. Another thing i've noticed is that we were always subject to social interactions in the early days of gaming and it was great, finding new friends in guilds or just chatting with random people and building your own guild and a lot of things you genuinely needed help with in the game because you or a duo couldnt do it.... That's been lost over time for the majority of games. Hate to say it, but if you're around 30, golden days of gaming and those memories we had won't be relived, all we can do is cherish them and look back on them now.

Isn't that what Blizzard kind of did? Starcraft, Diablo, and Warcraft were huge, so I bet a bunch of those players found about wow because of other blizzard games. I only played Starcraft, but I knew about wow, unfortunately I was too young to pay for sub fee. :(
@TheDestructodave520
@TheDestructodave520 Жыл бұрын
@@lulkaku Thats one of the main reasons WoW was so popular; it pulled from a much larger potential playerbase, in all their other games. Where nowadays MMO's are basically just pulling from the shrinking, aging, mmo playerbase. Riot has a ton of potential players and young players with their other games, TV show, etc. It will attract new people to the genre, similar to how WoW did. Its one reason I think its like the last major hope for an MMO resurgence. Something like AoC is only gonna appeal to traditional MMO players and honestly a niche portion, too.

Instanced content i do not care at all got my fill on that 13+ years ago in wrath and i still feel that i am full of that kind of stuff and have no interest at all doing dungeons and raids after doing those thousands of times back in TBC-Wrath. Most people seem to have rose colored glasses on when they remember the "fun" times doing dungeons in wrath but all i remember was the constant drama and the amount of people that had zero to none idea how to even do the basic things on their classes and considering the game peaked on its player count there was way too many people that had almost zero idea what to do.

The reason why I think Riot's MMO is going to be huge when and after it launches is the number of people already in love with the IP. A year ago Riot released a little info on the montlhy active players for the Runaterra based games (LoL, TFT, LoR, LoL:WR) and the numbers were impressive: 180 Million players per month. That's more than the entirety of the Steam users and without taking into account Valorant players. Let's say 10% of those players try the MMO, that's 18M already. To that, let's add the traditional MMO players and the fans of a little cultural phenomenon that revolutionazed the animation industry called Arcane and you get why i think this game is going to be huge!

Guild Wars 2 really brought back the social aspect of an MMO. The more players in a world boss or world event, the more powerful that event is against you, but the better the reward. You have to show up to dungeons, raids, and fractals entrances to ask for people that are looking for group. Each dungeon has 3 different path ways, so during that time you will make long lasting friendships due to the longevity and play time with the players you encounter through this social aspect. My guild hopped to another guild because we loved playing with those guildies and they were larger than our guild, they welcomed us with open arms. Truly my favorite MMO. Love you Zach!!!!!

I believe the future of MMO variety will depend on the games focusing on their "niche" market instead of trying to cater to every one. For example: FF14 story rules all. It has a little of everything but story is its main niche. WoW's daring e-sports approach to their endgame of raids and tournaments is their niche. Ashes of Creation plan to rejuvenate the open-world pvp genre will be their niche. etcetc. If games prioritize on what they are best at instead of trying to cater to everyone, only then will variety and options will return to the MMO genre.

Now, the pool is saturated, the good MMO's (well, 2 like Arthars said) have long-lasting fanbase and pushed the competitors out, it's too expensive or just simply difficult to make a beneficial MMO game. Studios would rather make cheaper mobile games that rack in more profit, also with varying successes. The game genre metagame changed, that's all. Also someone brought up a great point in the comment, not a lot of new generation for MMO players, the playerbase is not cultivated and recycled like other genres.

I gave FFXI a shot about 2 years ago and I had a lot of fun playing it. Last year I tried Everquest for the first time (p99 too) and I had a lot of fun playing that as well. I really like old MMOs but I can see why others may not. Hell even right now I am playing Helbreath and that was more or less made in '99 but I started it in '01. I just really like it's pvp, it is simple and fun. I really liked the old albion online too but now it is... IDK I don't like it that much it is too zergy back in 2018 I could solo in the black zone and take fights 1v2 1v3 and win them but now I go solo black zone and get rolled by 10-15 players all the time. I hate it.

When MMOs where at their peak MMOs didn't have to compete with social media...back then a LOT of people played MMOs to socialize. I can't tell you how many guys I know that met there ex-wives in EQ or other MMOs. Times have changed and MMOs are dying because they were a niche experience in the early internet days and they will never be able to capture as many people as they use to. The only people that regularly play MMOs these days are streamers or people that are unemployed...there just isn't a market for it anymore.

There's a reason games like Runescape and WoW are still alive after so many years. There's a reason that FFXIV and ESO succeeded. There's a reason that BDO still has many players despite it being P2W. What did they do? They just did it right. That's it. This is why people still play them or keep coming back to play them. Nowadays... every new MMO focuses on too many stupid things and monetization that they end up complicating too much things and die off in the process. Mark my words today: Lost Ark will be nearly dead a few years from now on while Runescape and WoW will still run and be alive like always.

Well, I think the "problem" is that when players sink hundreds-to-thousands of hours and sometimes tons of money into a MMO game (e.g. WoW, FF14, etc.), they will rarely quit forever (and if they do, it's usually because of real-world stuff) and realistically, as an adult with a job and maybe family, you have time to play max. one "large-scale MMO" game seriously (not e.g. spending 30 minutes a day in an indie small-scale MMO game)... and when new MMO game is released, players jump into it, play for a few weeks-to-months and then leave to keep up with real world stuff or return to their "main MMO game" and the new MMO game's CCP drop... and when CCP drop, *"The game is dying"* will be all over the internet and even more players will quit/potential new players won't buy it ...plus of course, the time changed, the gaming industry and especially players evolved and expecting similar results as in the 2000s is naive

I can sincerely say that all of my MMO memories that I’ll never forget….80% of them are from FFXI and the other 20% is from WoW (vanilla,BC,WotLK). I see people recycling the very old and wrong idea that "the playerbase grew up and stopped wanting to play mmos". Again. Wrong! We had NO options! Suddenly EVERY game wanted to be WoW and if the casual WoW style wasn't what you wanted to do, too bad! No options of any significant quality for a decade and a half at least now. Just a bunch of highly-monetized products that all are trying in some aspect to mimic WoW in hopes of being "the next anomalous mmo in terms of popularity and sheer playerbase numbers". We didn't outgrow or stop wanting these games. They stopped existing and being made/developed and its not until AoC now that we are even hearing of any company entertaining horizontal focus in a game.

WoW was the last MMO that came out and "just was good" because it only had to compete with Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot etc. Even though we now know WoW was scuff as hell on launch, it was so much better than anything else that it seemed perfect. But now a days no one will ever be able to build a new MMO that can hold up against WoW or FFXIV after decades of development straight off the bat. New MMOs will always need time to grow into their own thing and if they don't do something gimmicky that keeps them relevant they won't make it off the "new-MMO-parking-lot." But then they'll be defined by their gimmick and won't attract a large audience. It's a catch-22 and we'll probably never get away from it ever again...

100% mmos isnt about having all the content in the world, even though content is good an mmo needs to tap into human Psychology. For example there is a big difference between pressing a teleporter to get to the raid and meeting with some people from your guild and taking the flight path to the raid, see the world... travel it! Players below you that are leveling see the high level guild flying above them, alot of this makes the world feel alive and that is priority 1. (Like playing instruments in FF14 just adds so much "aliveness" to the game)

Also in FF11, since Asmon is not very knowledgable of a game, is kinda like Lineage 2 that all progression in patches is VERTICAL! Which means, everytime there is new gear, level cap increase and its a long way to just reach the level, adding even crazier grind than before without nerfing the old content, does it get dated? yes! However the big difference with modern MMOs is that while its true its not the best in slot, its value as a piece to farm does not decrease since you still need it for progression and its worth getting one even when the game is old during that time. Unlike now that its so easy to get a max iLvl gear to the point that it makes anything with less stat and higher rarity a cosmetic farm and therefore loses value.

It's nowhere near transformative enough, and the ways MMORPG's could be seriously altered are countless. BUT, the market decides how these games are designed, not nerdy dreamers, and unfortunately Blizzard taught the moneymen that a broadly appealing MMORPG theme-park can make them billions. They are still chasing that dragon, because to them there's no other reason to make an expensive game. It's just like dumb sequels in film, except films are a dime a dozen so you get some good ones anyway, whereas MMORPG's only come around so often. And that's why we're stuck here. The Ashes guy could potentially have been the kind of guy we're waiting for. Some filthy rich person who not only wanted a different MMORPG, but for their own reasons wanted to revolutionize the genre. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like he's it, but that's basically what we're waiting for. I can't picture the board of any company in this reality backing something regarded as experimental, even though it may not actually be as experimental as it looks from the perspective of the Blizzard design philosophy.
