It's a fun time! My friends and I had an absolute blast the night we recorded a bunch of the multiplayer footage for this. Despite many of its quirks and clear flaws, we had so much fun laughing and goofing around which the game does a great job of making possible.

Assault is my favorite game in the series. It may be too late to save StarFox but it's not too late to give this game some love if you ask me. Also Krystal's big moment was sensing distress coming from Sauria and I'd argue that was a really cool moment for her character. She had other cool small moments too that don't get the recognition they deserved.

My personal favorite Star Fox game if I'm being honest. It had an amazing narrative and story and the ground missions are really a lot of fun! And of course, the amazing multiplayer it has. I spent countless hours playing it with my cousins. I would love to see this game get remastered/re-released for the Switch

I am 100% biased. Assault was my first Star Fox game. I had a SNES when I was extremely young and remember seeing the original Star Fox on the packaging for the console and loving the puppet designs. My older brother bought us a gamecube and then my other older brother bought assault after playing it at a friend's house. I played it once and was immediately hooked. The story drew me in, I enjoyed the gameplay and multiple styles of play. I loved the music and it is by far my favorite video game soundtrack. Multiplayer I played a ton second only to smash. Again biased since my second star fox game was adventures (which I still like and may be my second fav game sound track) I was actually disappointed with 64, don't get me wrong it is a solid game but 64 was a back step for me. The story I was ok with but that was clearly not the focus, I still don't understand the ground movement in 64, was kinda weird and pointless so if I was gonna play multiplayer star fox it will be assault. All this being said I will play any star fox (except command) because I enjoy the series as a whole.

Star Fox Assault is definitely the best multiplayer experience the franchise has to offer. I also played A TON of it back in the day. Honestly, I'd probably play a handful of other Gamecube multiplayer games over it as time has passed, but I think it's multiplayer is often overlooked in the general discussion. I hope I was able to highlight it at least a little and show how while I have some issues with it, there's still a ton of fun to be had.

You know, considering how few people actually owned a Wii U I would say Star Fox Zero's sales aren't bad at all. Definitely prefer Assault though, it isn't perfect but it's a straight upgrade from 64 in a few ways (mostly the graphics and story) and it did a great job making Krystal feel like a natural fit for the team. Being able to switch from on-foot to Landmaster to Arwing on the fly for certain missions is also really cool.

The trigger killing your index finger is so true. It's why I have to play this game with my black or orange controllers. I got a silver one that's practically brand new, but the spring on the analogue trigger has more tension in it. Long sessions absolutely start to become painful, wish the sections where you rode wing-side just let me use the A button and left stick. Over all I wish the game let you pick different control schemes on the fly, or at least let me pick separately on-wing, tank and on-foot rather than forcing all 3 to share. Cause ya, dual stick is on the only way to make the on-foot enjoyable so it's a forced pick on the other two modes.

I was so looking forward to this video. When I was first introduced to Star Fox via watching a let's play of SF Zero, I really enjoyed assault for it's story and it's mix of arwing and on foot missions. At least, as far as watching it. I still haven't gotten to play it but I'm hopeful that some day I will. And the story in this game! No Andross. Star Wolf being more than just an evil mercenary team to rival Star Fox. General Pepper himself as a boss. Peppy's big moment... I still think of all the games it has my favorite story. I wish we had gotten more like it... instead of the dumpster fire that was Command and Zero rebooting everything (though I still like Zero).

There's still so much about Assault I still could've talked about and it really deserves the kind of "redemption arc" it's had over the years. Hardly perfect, and still no 64 in many ways, but the path it was starting to pave could've been a good one. I didn't talk much about Peppy's big moment, mostly because I actually think it gets a bit undone and changes it from a big moment to a bit of an inconsequential action that it didn't even really feel worth mentioning. Just my quick thoughts on that part though since I didn't bring it up in the video. I've not played Command before. I skipped it all those years ago simply because I couldn't afford to buy games at the time, but it's reputation has me incredibly interested...and worried a bit lol. I'm going to do my best to not let it all sway my experience and, knowing me, I'll probably try and highlight any positives to help it get at least SOME praise out there, but we'll see how the final result ends up. I hope it isn't too ugly...

Assault was my favorite game in the series because I really liked being able to jump in and out of vehicles, and it expanded the story. Admittedly, the dialogue is pretty cringe at times and the controls/gameplay are kind of scuffed. Luckily those didn’t really drag down the experience for me. Too bad Star Fox didn’t take what worked in Assault and 1/64 as a base to build on. My ideal Star Fox game would be that. If I could have any of the Star Fox games be remade I’d choose Assault. That way they’d be able to fix the various issues while remaining mostly faithful. If we got online multiplayer, and more maps/characters that would be really fun. I’d also want to see a side story that better fleshed out the game and makes it a little longer. Like maybe one that shows us what happened with Bill and Katt (maybe even throw in a few of Command’s characters despite the game’s flaws. Good luck on that video), or what happened with Star Wolf. Those would go a long way to justifying the price. Some guy is currently porting Nuke Town into Reach (he’s not done yet, but people have recreated various CoD maps in Infinite’s Forge and they work surprisingly well. Hopefully the rumors/leaks about Forge AI and Firefight are actually true. I’d reinstall the game if they added that), and Metroid Prime 2 maps into Halo 2. They work surprisingly well and I’m sure Assault’s maps (and maybe even 64’s multiplayer maps) would work really well. Hopefully someone ports over a bunch of Assault’s content. That would be really fun.
@Zerbraxi

Assault definitely needs to be revisited, or at least expanded upon. Going back and playing it again it made me realize just how good some of the core ideas really are. Expand that narrative into a branching path system, or heck, tie it closer to the roguelite style of Star Fox 2 and have an adapting narrative around the events happening within the Lylat System at any given moment. There's so much potential that Assault paves the way for and it's unfortunately just left behind.

Yeah. Too bad Nintendo thinks that they need to reinvent the wheel with each entry instead of just refining what works and building on that. Luckily, we’ve recently seen a bunch of Star Fox inspired rail shooters. Unfortunately, they mostly just take inspiration from the original and don’t really deviate from that. Having stuff from 64/Assault like tanks, on foot sections, all range mode, and a few other things would greatly enhance the gameplay. Hopefully we get an Assault inspired game at some point. I’m assuming that in addition to Command you’re probably going to cover Starlink since the whole selling point of that game was Star Fox characters being part of the Switch version. Good luck on those.

@@shreksnow1918 I'll definitely be covering Command and Zero for sure. I also aim to cover Guard and a bunch more of the side games & fan projects like Super Weekend, Event Horizon, and maybe even just inspired games like Ex-Zodiac. Still not confident how I'll handle those but we'll see. As for Starlink, it's something I do WANT to cover, but I'm not sure where or when. I've never played it and am excited to try it. I'm sure I'll end up covering it eventually but it might not be in this same run of Star Fox videos. I also want to, and I always hesitate saying stuff like this in case I abandon the idea later, but I want to cover the Sin & Punishment games at some point close to around when I kinda "wrap up" this series of Star Fox videos. I think there's a ton of interesting comparison between them and their game design and Star Fox. I would also like to do Panzer Dragoon at some point for a similar reason, but I'm trying to mostly focus on Nintendo titles at the moment that I cover and I have to move on to another series away from Star Fox at some point lol. @Zerbraxi It will be interesting to hear your thoughts on those games. Too bad Zero and Command have various issues that drag them down (both those games are further proof that Nintendo never truly knew what they were doing with Star Fox, and were mostly just reusing ideas that came from the first two games). Hopefully you’ll have fun making those videos, covering the fan games, and other rail shooters. Good luck on that👍 I have a funny story regarding Starlink. Once I was at Walmart and in the electronics section there was the “Walmart Family Bundle” that had Mario Rabbids and Starlink for $30, while Mario Rabbids on its own was $50. You’d think it would be the other way around because that pricing makes zero sense😂. Mario Rabbids was really fun and I’ll probably get the sequel. Hopefully we get another one. I also hope that the people who made Starlink are allowed to make a Star Fox game that builds on the various things that worked with Starlink, and uses ideas from previous Star Fox games. It’s pretty weird how Ubisoft decided to cash in on the Toys to Life trend after it was dead. This is unrelated, but do you think you’d ever make a video on Star Control 2, or probably not? I haven’t played it. I’ve just seen several videos/retrospectives on the game and it definitely looks interesting. I like how crazy and weird all the aliens are. Hopefully the brothers who made it are able to get the legal issues out of the way so they can make the true sequel. It would be interesting to see what they have planned. There’s some weird thing where they technically own all the content in the games, and this one company owns the brand/name.

That's kinda how all of this started quite honestly lol. I am looking forward to diving into the fan games and side projects a ton though. There might be a slight break after Zero just so I can get some space away from Star Fox for a little to stay in a creative head space. Having a linear story isn't always a bad thing when it comes to repayability. A good story will keep people coming back, supported by good gameplay and it will endure for a while. Ive played the Halo games countless times but only played Halo 5 and Infinite campaigns once because the story for each one was pretty shallow and crap. I'd probably play assault many times over just for the story and potential difficulty differences

If I remember correctly there are some mechanical spoilers and some examples of pacing issues around specific areas of the game that I do go into some "spoiler lite" such as a gym mechanic. However, and I really hope I'm not wrong if I am, but I don't recall going deep into the story of the primary antagonist. In general I try not to dive deep into details of the narrative in my videos because if someone watches it and decides to play the game I covered then I still want them to have some surprise and thrill. Typically if I'm about to dive deep into a plot, which I've done a couple of times, I try to call it out beforehand but I don't recall doing any significant story spoilers in Uranium. There are definitely Pokemon design spoilers though and I know that can be touchy for some which I totally understand. I hope that helps.

22:18 At risk of sounding like an advert, that sounds like Star Fox Event Horizon, a mod for Freespace 2. I'm surprised the short length of only 10 missions wasn't brought up. That always feels like the main elephant in the room. I mean, now that the whole "on foot missions suck" phase in the fanbase has passed (sort of). The multiplayer has one crippling weakness, no CPUs. I think it's at its best with 4 or at least 3 players. 2 makes the match feel empty and can be one sided, and you can't play alone whenever you want. My takeaway from the first mission is that there's only so many "good designs" you can put in a space shooter when designing enemies. Blowing up big space ships and starfighters is eternal. Beyond the first mission, the Meteor boss is just the Area 6 boss and the Orbital Gate is just Sector Z. I do think Command and SF2 technically had more creative enemies and maybe even bosses than Assault, but let's be honest that doesn't seem to have done them any good.
@Zerbraxi

Oh don't worry. I have Star Fox Event Horizon on a list for a video I'm hoping to make after I get through the whole series. I would like to cover a lot of surrounding projects around the Star Fox universe that isn't mainline games to be a bit more "targeted at core fans" so to speak. Yeah, I think I make like 1 mention in a single line about the length but it's because the length itself doesn't actually bother me that much. I appreciate the smaller, more tight knit approach, though 10 missions is definitely pretty small considering even 64 had 15 levels I believe. Doing these videos is always difficult in finding the balance of trying to bring up new things while also hitting on the common threads. I tried focusing more on the issue being the lack of variety and replayability as personally those are the larger sacrifices to the single player experience over the mission quantity alone. I was originally going to mention the no CPU's because it's completely unforgivable, especially in the era it was released. If it wasn't for the fact that I completely rewrote the entire multiplayer section after playing it all with my friends to be more of the skit, it's a point I would've touched on for sure. I couldn't agree with you more on that one. Touching on the level design limitations of a genre is always difficult because we've seen in the past that the limitations can be completely shattered with a new game. Perhaps Star Fox is in a weird place because Space Shooters aren't a very competitive market so perhaps creativity isn't flowing as aggressively as other genre's, but I hesitate to stamp that opinion because I don't feel it's true. I haven't ever officially covered the series, but I think of Sin & Punishment as well as Panzer Dragoon a lot when I play Star Fox nowadays. There's a ton of interesting variety that Star Fox could learn from, and I have a feeling I'll be mentioning Sin & Punishment Star Successor quite a bit when I get to the Star Fox Zero video. It'll definitely get mentioned at least for sure. Thank you so much for the comment! It's always a pleasure chatting with everyone.

10:34 If only Project ACES was part of that development team. However, they were probably busy with the Ace Combat Zero at the time. Great , now I want Star Fox/Ace Combat hybrid game (outside of the closest thing being Starlink: Battle for Atlas specifically on the Switch).

@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 8 ай бұрын
It was probably a combination of the bosses, enemy design, and dialogue. Those things definitely make it feel redundant in areas. Even the theme of "never give up, trust your instincts" from 64 is similar to the theme of "don't hesitate, when the time comes just act" from Assault. Though some of the details explored around the Aparoids along with having characters like Pepper and Wolf play such major roles makes me enjoy this narrative the most thus far.

I recently wanted to try this game, but since I'm trying to play less, uhh 🔄detalume games via 🐬, I will probably not get it anytime soon, unless Nintendo brings it to the switch and since its likely to expect Gamecube games on Switch now, Star Fox seems very plausible.

Starfox 64 is a great game. But it was kind of the nail in the coffin for starfox in that style cause, aside from a new story, pure arwing gameplay would get boring after the 3rd time.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 28 күн бұрын
Do you really think so? I'm not sure I can fully agree. From playing the games back to back to back, including the second game, 64 was the third arwing game in my playthroughs. I don't think this would really apply to other genres either. I do think overall I get your sentiment though. The obvious innovation is to explore outside of the Arwing with on foot or the walker for example. However, I still think there could be cool stuff to explore within that rail shooter framework. We've seen some neat ideas from the likes of Panzer Dragoon or Sin & Punishment for example. While they aren't "arwing" they do follow the same design fundamentals as Star Fox and have done some cool stuff. Or I'm just being too optimistic lol
@Meanbean-uj4kp
@Meanbean-uj4kp 28 күн бұрын
@Zerbraxi there is definitely more to explore with the on rails games. But nintendo unfortunately won't and keeps handing it to different companies, which loses the progress made. A starfox game I would like to see combines the elements of assault with 64.

@@Zerbraxi for real, people used Bayonetta 2s starfox section to show what platinum can be a great starfox dev but what I saw was new ideas. People were too focused on them recreating the play style they ignored the different mechanics used. The slow motion dodging and even time stopping sequences. They are Bayonetta related things but it's an example of spicing up the on rail gameplay without a hardware gimmick.

Nintendo kept doing experimental, different things with Star Fox during this era, and never really stopped. I think they were chasing after Halo with Assault, but wound up with a watered down, bargain bin version of Halo with a star fox skin attached.

This was definitely the era of the multiplayer shooter. Not just Halo either but stuff like Call of Duty 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, and Metal of Honor Frontline. I can't blame them for trying but it almost seems like there was a lack of direction of whether to make a traditional Star Fox game or a multiplayer focused title. I almost wish they just committed to one or the other though I can't say I hate what they ended up making. Flawed with an identity crisis but still a bit fun.
@Tailstraw_xD

@@Zerbraxi Yeah, I'll drink to that. My running theory is that Halo 2 releasing in the middle of Assault's development had a direct impact on the game's focus. There are just so many superficial similarities that tend to come from trying to copy another studio's style.

Gaming was an embarrassment of riches back in the day, and we all took it for granted. We assumed that high quality games would continue to flow forever. More and more advancements and innovations, new IPs and classic characters used in great new ways that change and even create whole genres with each new game. Little did we know, a big fat loaf of stagnation with a side of monetization was cooking up, ready to be served in the 2010s, and then even moreso into the 2020s. And it's been like this for so long, that tons and tons of younger people (and complacent old heads) just accept the way things are as being normal. More games and consoles are being sold now than ever before in history. People eat up remakes, remasters, stale sequels and monetized live service garbage. Of course that's what we keep getting, because thats what people keep buying. We get what we deserve.

I don't think there voices would work with Assault. I'm trying to imagine Assault slippys saying his lines 64s slippys voice and it just doesn't work at all. Actually this goes for everyone except falco, I think the Assault voice actor and 64 can be interchangeably because of how close their voices are. It's really hard though since we haven't seen the 64 voice actors be I a game were there voice acting is dated or is trying to recreate that dated performance. (Not that I think that they're voice acting is bad, it aged well in 64 because of its story esthetic).

This game was definitely not the worst entry, but definitely not one of the best either. It is a fun time on the first time. I really didn't want to replay the on foot sections and those were a significant chunk of the game. This game would have definitely benefited from online connectivity, because as much fun as the multiplayer looks, you are essentially walled off from it of you don't have 3 other players to play with (which was my circumstance at the time). Since almost all unlocks pertain to multiplayer, there isn't that much of an incentive to 100% the game if you can't use the unlocked content.

These are great points for sure. It's quite a back and forth in terms of pros and cons for Assault. I fully agree that replaying it isn't much of an experience especially considering just how addicting the replayability of Star Fox 1, 2, and 64 all is. How they didn't make bots for the multiplayer though will always leave me confused.
