Star Fox 64 Is The Example For All Future Remakes

What do you call a series that’s second release is already a remake? Star Fox! Despite the success of the original Star Fox on the SNES, apparently Nintendo decided the next logical options were to cancel the second game, and then reboot the entire series. Completely reasonable.
Something I wanted to capture in my first video on Star Fox is that the game was so critically important. Even beyond that, its place in the industry was settled and the sales numbers backed it. Both the large amount of money made and the introduction of new technology like the Super FX chip, firmly solidified the Star Fox name as a new first party IP for Nintendo, only this time, made by westerners.

The video is great but some remarks have to be done: -Solar is actually a molten planet -Pepper is the one handing the check to Star Fox, evidenced by the "This is one steep bill, but it's worth it" phrase
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 9 ай бұрын
Ya know...I'm surprised it took this long to have a comment on this lol. When it comes to Solar I never know which to refer to it as because it's called a Molten Planet in game, but the official Nintendo Power guide refers to it as a star. Some internal asset files also refer to texts of Solar as "sun" and even in an interview for Star Fox 64 3D the devs were originally going to change it back to to a star. Though, I guess you're right, the most official in-game canon from 64 and Command both refer to it as a planet. Though I hope you can see why I bounce back and forth so much on it lol. I can't imagine this is the case that Pepper is handing it over to Star Fox. The Invoice states "Attn General Pepper" which would mean the invoice for the bill is being sent to him. The fact there's also a kill count for "services rendered" and the invoice is signed by Star Fox crew officially would indicate that the Star Fox Mercenary group is invoicing Corneria for their work, hence Pepper would be the recipient being billed. Thank you for the kind words and for watching. It's incredibly appreciated :)

5:08 well, guess that explains why they haven’t been able to innovate. The foundation was already built by someone else, the other games were collaborations with other studios, and a good chunk of the “new mechanics” were just reused. Luckily a few of the games were really good. I thought this game was really fun, but because I played it after my formative years where I’d be nostalgic for something I was let down because EVERYONE built it up as a perfect game (it was the 3DS remake and I wasn’t alive when the original came out). I still had a really good time, but to me it wasn’t the masterpiece that I expected. I also didn’t know how to do the different paths. I will be sure to look those up at some point. I really like how each of the levels is radically different in terms of environment, scenarios, and other stuff. It definitely adds to the replayability. The story is pretty dumb when you critically analyze it, but it has amazing presentation and never marketed itself as this well written epic so that doesn’t really matter. I haven’t played the multiplayer either and was completely unaware of the ability that run around on foot. Too bad they didn’t expand upon that in the game. Luckily Assault would reintroduce that and expand upon it. Hopefully if we get another game they’ll throw away the gimmicks, take what worked from each of the games and expand upon it, and actually make a new story. Luckily we have fan projects like UndyingNephalim’s Star Fox Event Horizon (the guy changed his KZbin name to IceCreamMan for whatever weird reason. He’s probably going to change it back because all of his other things still use his original name), and Esphirian’s Star Fox Remadventures. Great video. I will be sure to check out your other stuff.

I'm really hoping that the future of Star Fox is bright. Since half of the entries are essentially remakes, there's clearly so much unlocked potential to be had still. Especially when you look at mechanics similar to other rail shooters such as Panzer Dragoon and Sin & Punishment, it's clear that this entire genre still has a lot to unload. I've not heard of those projects but I'm VERY excited to try out a bunch of fan projects for Star Fox once I conclude playing through them all so I really appreciate the recommendations. Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I have at least 1 more major video releasing this year and then I'm incredibly excited to get jumping into 2023 with even more effort and excitement...and probably some bad jokes. I never hated Slippy as a kid. As an adult I respect Slip a whole lot more, every team NEEDS a mechanic, they wouldn't have made it to fichina if it weren't for him. Sure Fox and Peppy may know a thing or two about the inner workings of an arwing or the great fox but slippy can fix just about anything not to mention built the blue marine (still a very cool concept), and when you're flying in space and working beyond rocket science practically? Sounds pretty manly to me. This Toad deserves respect. and another thing, Slippy gets a lot of flack but i've played this game so many darn times times and lemme tell ya, he cries for help the most on bolse and not that much anywhere else. and if you want to rank up points? He's got 3 freebies for ya right behind him.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 7 ай бұрын
It's funny you say this about Slippy, because I actually had a similar experience that I think I shared in this video where it ended up being Falco who I actually needed to save the most. Outside the specific "Rescue Slippy" mission, it's not him who was usually the most in need on my playthroughs. It's funny though that even later games like Star Fox Assault and Command both make nods to him always being in need when it's not the case in my experience which leads me to believe that it's just some sort of illusory truth loop by this point.
@EclipseHedgehog
@EclipseHedgehog 7 ай бұрын
@@Zerbraxi agreed. slippy may not be my favorite (that would be Bill) but calling him 'useless' is such a stretch. i just wish these three could help themselves sometimes like maybe another crewmember would shoot them down or just. do. a loop! I had this idea for a new starfox game where they could take a page from mass effect, make the great fox a hub world and talk to your crew. the more you chat with them, the bigger the bond, the less they ask for help and instead give you power ups from laser and rings to maybe some of the power ups from 643d, leading to another path or secret boss, etc. only thing i liked about command was that every character was playable and had their own unique designed ship with their own attributes. starlink had some neat ideas too, not only being open world but open universe, still having some rpg elements and customizing your own ship, it had racing and even had bounty hunting before metroid where samus IS a bounty hunter.

It's really disgusting how Nintendo screws over small dev teams. Honestly I feel there needs to be better laws in place to prevent this form happening. Sega did it with Sonic riders too. It's making it so now all indie teams might as well just stay indie and not go with companies because of disrespect of this.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 2 ай бұрын
This is something that would be incredibly difficult to regulate without severe unintended consequences. However, I think teams mostly staying indie is actually a net positive for the industry. Sure we might not get as much of our beloved mascots, but what we do get tends to be significantly more creative and ambitious. Even if technology wasn't able to be pushed as aggressively in the visuals department, I'd say that's still a trade I'd be happy to make.

Don’t worry, it’s not nostalgia bias, I mean, I’m only 13 and it’s solidified its place as my favorite game ever, with my usual route being (I’m not bad I always take the hard exits): Corneria, Meteo, Fichina/Fortuna, Sector X, Macbeth, Area 6, and Venom, and with a high score of 1504. And while I do think the N64 version is better, mostly because the voice lines are redone in the 3ds version and I just don’t think they sound as good, they are both, and always will be, amazing

A big problem with N64 games on the VC / NSO is mostly that the N64 analog stick is far more precise than it had any right to be for its time. There's such a wide range of motion that the modern day controllers, heck even back to the Gamecube, that isn't covered so it makes controlling some N64 games weird. Mario 64 is still probably the biggest culprit. I'm glad you're trying the 3DS version though since that was rebuilt for that particular joy stick. That version of the game is awesome! I really hope you have a good time 😀

I love the Star Fox games, the only one I didn’t like was Adventures because I don’t like Zelda. but if I did like Zelda, I’d buy a Zelda game. The one glaring thing no one talks about in the Star Fox franchise is the gameplay. Yeah, we know you shoot things, but as you improve and go for high-scores, it fundamentally changes the level. That is a shame, because you can tell Nintendo put a lot of work into that immersive gameplay. Most people’s knowledge is skin deep. They know about alternate routes. they know the lines. But if you were to watch them play a level, it’s laughable. While 64 is popular, most people can’t tap into the depth of the gameplay. A lot of that has to do with the ambiguity of the design. They want you to experiment and try many different strategies. But that was most true with Zero, there are so many secrets that were not obvious from the start. And most people don’t know about them. With all that said, it’s hardcore. I love improving and mastering a Star Fox game. It’s tough as nails.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi Жыл бұрын
Some very good points made here. I always struggle debating how in depth to go on something based on how much some people might care or not about a particular topic. With Star Fox 64, I debated going into how intense the medal hunting is and just how difficult the kill count requirements are on some levels for example. Perhaps in, in hindsight, I'll find that there were more people interested in that discussion than I thought there would be. It's always a balance that's hard to strike when making something for others to watch. Nonetheless, I don't always 100% every game I cover, but in this case, I did. I deleted my old save data on my N64 cartridge to even do so. This game just immediately gets me so hyped to play and retrying a stage or route multiple times feels so good that it's almost a privilege just to play it again. Thankfully with making videos I can easily make something on Star Fox 64's gameplay specifically if the desire is there for it. Perhaps after I finish the videos on the full series I'll circle back and do just that. Thank you so much for the feedback.

Considering just how impressive it is, I do wonder how they ever properly follow up today. The longer time passes with unsatisfied fans the larger the hype of 64 becomes and the harder that hurdle will be to cover if you're Nintendo. Valve has a similar issue with something like Half Life and Portal.

It's kinda tough either way. There are times where being upfront about your enjoyment on something totally just works. However, other times it can lead to a viewer presuming a certain bias that they now will view every comment from. A third angle is just that sometimes, discovering if I enjoy, don't enjoy, or wherever on the spectrum of fun I land, becomes part of the journey that I went through and want to convey that as a story. Metroid Fusion is exactly that last case for me. There are things I absolutely love like the enemies, the X parasites, the boss fights, controls and movement, and more. There are also other things I found incredibly frustrating. I've had mixed feelings from when I was younger, so kind of re-exploring my feelings on something I had already played but didn't remember much I thought could've been a fun story to tell. Sometimes it's definitely way nicer to just have that information if the person likes something or not upfront because it does help you know where the comments are coming from. I totally get that. How I convey myself and thoughts throughout these videos is a constant development so I appreciate this type of feedback.
