From those big names you look up to I have watched Liam Triforce and of course James Rolfe, still occasionally watching hbomberguy. But what makes your content unique is your own personal takes on these, different personality and humour. In my opinion you are succeeding in providing a mix of the sources of inspiration you want to bring in these videos. It's why this is pretty much the only retro games channel I have stuck around and continue watching. Obscure as this content is, it's darn good and great at bringing the conversation that can be had around these games to my attention.

Star Fox Assault the best Star Fox game also you can tell there was content they just did not had time to finish like Titania Desert and Zoness Sea Base not having missions in single player but at least we got the maps in multiplayer.

I LOVE Star Fox Assault!! I periodically come back to it whenever I wanna plug in my GameCube again! This game was loads better than Adventures, and it had the gall to actually be fun and have a great story! Unlike many games today which aren't even that fun and lack a coherent story.. Assault with its graphics, fun gameplay, and great story just go beyond what I expect out of a game, it aged pretty well in that regard.

I do think all of those are insanely important. However, what about 1 of them had a massive game design impact that shaped the progress of the medium? Not just were big hits and important classics, but how did they shape the development and innovation of the industry? For example, in film King Kong isn't just a classic, but it shaped the future of film creation as a whole. Dracula is a massive classic, but arguably Frankenstein shaped the industry more. Arguably even more than that was Metropolis which is way less known, but had a larger yet more silent impact. I do think Doom is close, though I would argue that both Quake and Wolfebstein 3D are more important to the medium as a whole despite Doom being way more successful of an IP.

@@Zerbraxiall of the games I mentioned were innovators that pioneered genres and broke boundaries. Super Metroid is a slightly derivative update of the original Metroid. It was also the worst selling game in the series at that point
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 8 күн бұрын
@@theycallmejpj @theycallmejpj Sales is a pretty irrelevant component to innovation. Some of the most ground breaking technologies and creative ideas are poor sellers. There exists an entire genre, Metroidvania's that point back specifically to Super. Even the second part of that's genre's name that came with Symphony of the Night, was directly inspired by the design of Super Metroid and The Legend of Zelda. I just can't, in good critical faith, pretend that an piece of art that encouraged an entire genre not be considered one of the most important of that medium. It is interesting that you make the observation that Super Metroid is just a derivation of the first in it's series, but use Outrun as an example when, while I absolutely adore that game and it helped inspire Power Drift which I also love, the Sega Arcade racer Hang-On came out before it and is almost an identical experience. The only real shift is motorcylces to cars really. The primary difference between the 2 in terms of success was marketing promotion. Maybe now I'm just getting too nerdy, but Space Invaders is insanely important as well, specifically in it's timing and manufacturing into the arcades which boomed its success. However, from a design perspective, is similar to that of Space Wars, a game released before it, which also inspired Asteroids as well. I love Space Invaders and agree it's one of the most important out there, but, just to be accurate, it wasn't the pioneer but simply an iteration on something that already existed but released at a better time with a more attractive pixel based graphics scheme rather than vector. Doom is also just an iteration on Wolfenstein, it's big brother. However, there are far more reasons Doom is such an important piece of the art form, but game design innovation isn't it, more technical, but that could be its own discussion. I guess we're just gonna have to disagree one this. I'm just not able to follow a through-line from your examples to your conclusion about Super. I'm actually finding the opposite, that the examples have more in common with Super Metroid than you might think.
@theycallmejpj
@theycallmejpj 8 күн бұрын
@@Zerbraxiwell you’re changing the goal posts now. We’ve somehow gone from “most important” to innovation. Space Invaders was massively important, as were the other games I mentioned, milestones in the progression of video games. Super Metroid is a fleshed out update of a game from the mid 80’s. Metroidvania is a dumb word used by people who are too young to have played the history of these in their own context. You’re welcome to your opinions but the numbers of games that were spawned off the back of the games I mentioned is in the thousands. And if you don’t understand that sales figures are a metric of importance then I don’t know what to say to you 🤷‍♂️
@Zerbraxi

@theycallmejpj no I'm not. I only referred to innovation because you explicitly called out "innovators that pioneered genres and broke boundaries. " Responding to your specific claims is not moving goal posts, it's discussion.

Starfox 64 is a great game. But it was kind of the nail in the coffin for starfox in that style cause, aside from a new story, pure arwing gameplay would get boring after the 3rd time.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 14 күн бұрын
Do you really think so? I'm not sure I can fully agree. From playing the games back to back to back, including the second game, 64 was the third arwing game in my playthroughs. I don't think this would really apply to other genres either. I do think overall I get your sentiment though. The obvious innovation is to explore outside of the Arwing with on foot or the walker for example. However, I still think there could be cool stuff to explore within that rail shooter framework. We've seen some neat ideas from the likes of Panzer Dragoon or Sin & Punishment for example. While they aren't "arwing" they do follow the same design fundamentals as Star Fox and have done some cool stuff. Or I'm just being too optimistic lol
@Meanbean-uj4kp
@Meanbean-uj4kp 13 күн бұрын
@Zerbraxi there is definitely more to explore with the on rails games. But nintendo unfortunately won't and keeps handing it to different companies, which loses the progress made. A starfox game I would like to see combines the elements of assault with 64.

owning a physical copy is amazing, i remember back in the day, how good it felt to use cartridges. thing is, cartridges today are a joke. the switch uses a glorified memory stick. the irony is, they could, genuinely gone the extra mile and made it more fun(and less prone to losing). but digital, at least for PC, is 100% the best way to buy games.

I could've, and do show footage I captured from it. However, with games that have multiple versions I often try to highlight either the best way to play it, or what is most accessible. Since both are fundamentally the same in terms of content, I went for the remastered since that's the easiest way to play it today separate from emulation.

"It's not actually all that innovative" while it has the most complex rpg mechanics known to men to this day. Bet he didn't even know you can change classes or how.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 14 күн бұрын
I didn't know how to change classes as a kid, but I know how to do them now as an adult. But, for most complex rpg mechanics ever....look I've grown more and more in love with the series, especially after doing this series. The Lost Age especially has gone from a game I skipped years ago, to one of my favorite JRPGs ever. But....most complex rpg mechanics known to man...no way. Dark Dawn is an interesting iteration on the Golden Sun series but all of the innovation happened in the first game. It was complex for handheld rpgs of its time, but other, more complex games already existed then. I'm confused though because something being more iterative rather than innovative isn't necessarily a negative so I'm surprised people take it as such.
@ubm91
@ubm91 14 күн бұрын
@@Zerbraxi i was reefing to the og series. Not dark dawn. And I was just correcting you because you said it didn't stray too far from the norm. Meanwhile the og two games have so many mechanics running on the background that are insane. Just a lot of people do not use them or even know they exist so it looks pretty basic to them, when it is far far from normal rpg fanfare
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 14 күн бұрын
@ubm91 the originals innovation though mostly stems from simplifying pre-existing ideas that existed in the genre for decades. That is without a doubt it's greatest strength and there's a twisted view that simplicity is bad and thus people often fight to defend it, claiming insane complexity, when the contrary is the primary reason for its success.
@bucky5869
@bucky5869 15 күн бұрын
Spot on with your analysis. I do have one disagreement, however. The end boss spectacle (I refer it to that as opposed to a boss fight since the whole sequence is scripted and has no other way of unfolding) conveys an idea that you touched upon in the intro sequence. The intro suggests that metroids have properties that could be of benefit. This is not only addressed by the hatchling recharging Samus' energy but also transfers the hyper beam Mother Brain had just used to devastate Samus. That's how I interpreted it, anyway. I love hearing retrospectives and reviews of the classics and absolutely loved that even though this one seems to have been meant to knock 3 down a peg, the shortcomings are very minor and prove it to be timeless and truly a masterpiece. Thank you for your work on this.
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 14 күн бұрын
Ya know, I think you're actually right about that nod in the beginning. I really should've pieced those elements together and I feel like I did implicitly, but really should've called it out. Though, to me, that's the best part about environmental storytelling is that interpretation can play such a large role and it makes all of our experiences that much more unique.

PC has no physical games, but is clearly a better platform : multiple stores, choice of controller/keyboard even for games never meant to support them, enhanced graphics, mods, Steam Deck… But I want to own my games ! I dont want to have them be able to disappear any day or randomly get an update that breaks them forever. I want to have a shelf I can browse and show-off, and I like when games are actually crafted for the hardware running them.

I feel ya. I'm very much in a similar boat. There are options such as GoG that sell their games DRM free which is what I often do a lot. There are also some developers, though incredibly rare, that still sell the full game on disc for PC such as Larian did recently with Baldur's Gate 3. It comes with a standalone key as well as a steam key. In general though, sometimes I just gotta buy the game on the storefront, and then download a ripped copy for later. This way I support the developer, and get to own what I purchased. Its not a perfect solution, but I'm not waiting for the publishers to fix the problem anymore.

For as flawed as the Adventures trilogy (Adventures, Assault, and Command) is, I at least give it credit for trying to move the narrative of Star Fox forward. Every SF game made in house at Nintendo seems content with retelling the same damn story from the SNES game...
@Zerbraxi
@Zerbraxi 28 күн бұрын
Yeah...I think with 64 nobody really cared because so much was added and expanded that it truly does feel like it's own experience rather than a copy of the SNES narrative. Considering now though that we have FOUR titles telling basically the same story, SNES -> 64 -> 643D -> Zero...yeah, I totally agree that at least Adventures, Assault, & Command were adding to the plot. Well...except nothing in Command is canon which kinda sucks :(
