Hey ZerkMonsterHunter 4 I am working on a tech demo on a kickstarter video game project and I am collaborating with some youtubers and this game is what you would get if you combined: Fall out, Pikmin, slug terra, and with the undertones and subtext of dark souls and blood borne in a scientific and demonic manner. once it's complete can I email you and we could collaborate on a discussion/ interview and with a symbiotic exchange for your time and kindness? I'm of the opinion that Bloodborne is the best representation of Lovecraftian horror in ANY medium, including Lovecraft's own works. The interactivity of video games allows you to discover the lore and piece it together slowly yourself, which is the only real way to represent "incomprehensible" and "unknowable" horrors.

You don't want to think too hard on the implications of Eldritch horror, as the very notion can give you anxiety. The worst part is we would be utterly powerless against such malevolent gods. No one wants to believe in a god that could wipe us out by accident.
@ZerkMonsterHunter
@ZerkMonsterHunter 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of lovecraftian fiction portrays these Gods as less malevolent and more uncaring, the more famous exceptions (Cthulu, Dagon, and Nyarlathotep) give them that reputation. Azathoth, as well as many of the entities in bloodborne, Ebreitas, Kos, Mergo andThe Amygdala are all either observers or only attack in self defense. the exception is the moon presence, who is based on Nyarlathotep, one of the aforementioned explicitly malevolent lovecraftian entities

@@ZerkMonsterHunter duly noted. You certainly keep up on your reading. A question: I don't know if you watch Stranger Things, but some say their attempts at cosmic horror were disappointing, what do you think?
@ZerkMonsterHunter
@ZerkMonsterHunter 5 жыл бұрын
@@gottesurteil3201 Cosmic horror hinges upon 3 things to stay scary: 1. direct combat is almost never an option, if it is combat only slows whatever it is You're fighting down, (like in "The Thing") or what You're fighting is merely a pawn/thrall of a greater power (see: every instance of someone fighting a shoggoth). 2. if the creatures power, capabilities or nature are explained to their fullest extent, the mystery and horror of not knowing exactly what the thing is capable of is lost. it is paramount that the creature's full suite of powers aren't demystified to either the audience or the characters, if it is they know what to expect and therefore can quantify the danger, ruining the established tension as a result. 3. don't make it possible for the characters to win. this is related to the first two, once again giving the characters a way out defeats the drama and therefore the threat. (this is where "The Thing" fails at being truly lovecraftian, as the ending heavily implies MacReady figures out the other guy is a thing, and thus MacReady is able to win off screen) I haven't seen stranger things so I assume they probably violated one or more of these things.
@gottesurteil3201
@gottesurteil3201 5 жыл бұрын
@@ZerkMonsterHunter the third one is definitely a violation. The first one is technically followed quite well, and the second remains to be seen. The cosmic horror in the show cannot be directly combated as far as I know, however it has explicitly labeled a young girl with psychic powers as it's only possible threat in this last season, so I think the fact it is admitting vulnerability is a shortcoming by that standard. We don't understand it past that it wishes to consume and destroy.

While you make valid points concerning the chalice dungeons, I have to say that you seen overly critical of them. The chalice dungeons are sources of infinite replayability and exploration. They are intense PvE gauntlets that encourage ongoing multiplayer fun long after the game has been beaten. In my opinion, what they lack in deliberate design and aesthetic, is more than made up for by the sole existence of infinite content. That may not be for everyone, but it's just more of a good thing for those who want a challenge. What you may see as unfair is probably the type of encounter I dream of finding.

Happy to see your work again Zerk, and I can say that the wait for this was extremely worth it. Another great piece to say the least. Bloodborne has been on my bucket list after completing Dark Souls One remastered, and I've been wanting to try the other games in there series. While I originally wanted to try the other Dark Souls out first before moving to Bloodborne, your video has me tempted to go to Bloodborne instead first and finally experience it. While it'll probably take some time for me to get to it (mainly due to the system exclusive hurdle you mentioned), when I finally do get Bloodborne, it'll be this video that truly gave me to push to finally get into it. Personally, I really enjoy chalice dungeons. I think they add something new to the soulsborne franchise. It gets grating, yes, but I won’t lie, it’s always fun going through one of these on a new playthrough. Plus, it takes after “Sens Fortress”, which is one of the best area in the entire franchise imo.
@ZerkMonsterHunter
@ZerkMonsterHunter 3 жыл бұрын
What makes Sens work when the chalices falter is that sens is a highly curated experience they gets rewarding on further playthroughs once you know the layout. The way the Fortress plays with light and certain enemy placements music by memory you can realize about how far into it you are. The chances don't have that luxury given that they're made up of the same 30 rooms just rearranged in different orders. I think the root chalices are extremely fun because you never know what to expect, but getting to those root chalices is too much of a chore in my opinion. Although I can completely understand why a lot of people do like the chalices they just aren't for me.

The parrying part was kind of funny to me because Dark Souls is how you explained it is in Bloodborne. You literally time the button press with when the enemy hits you, whereas in Bloodborne you have a short moment before the gunshot comes out, especially with other guns. It's like in Dark Souls 2 and 3 where you have (more so 3 because it's faster) to sync up when the parry happens with the enemy attack. In 1 you only have to time it based on the enemy. I will say though that it looked like alright timing in your examples, which is confusing because I never have those issues.

Dark souls parrying isn’t that bad. It’s animation is very intentional. You can’t have a medium shield that blocks 100% of damage and said shield is easy to parry with that’s what the small shields are for(unless you plan on practicing parrying with medium shields which is possible but as you pointed out difficult)
@ZerkMonsterHunter
@ZerkMonsterHunter 3 жыл бұрын
I think you misunderstood my point a bit here, the issue with the animation is that the parry point is something you need to have pointed out, otherwise You're going to assume the follow through is where the Parry occurs, EVEN if you are using a small shield. Bloodborne has an audio cue (gunshot) and a small visual one (muzzlflare) at the parry point. if dark souls had shields gleam at their parry point it would make the mechanic significantly more intuitive. not any easier, you still need to time it, but at least the game now has some way to communicate how.

“Switching parries from proactive to reactive” I believe you’ve completely misunderstood how parrying in DS1 works. You have to press the button right before the enemy hits you which is the literal definition of being reactive. Bloodborne actually has a slight firing delay on the gun ironically making it the actually “proactive” one. Maybe you mistook the system of DS1 with the one from DS2 and DS3? Cause these games pretty much just have slower versions of the Bloodborne system. Once you understand this you might even see why this was changed. Parrying in Demons Souls and DS1 was way too easy as it was entirely reactionary which is why they changed it in DS2 (and also in Bloodborne).
@ZerkMonsterHunter
@ZerkMonsterHunter 4 жыл бұрын
the timing wasn't my issue but more so the way the animation is designed to mislead you into thinking that the recovery frames are where the parry occurs, when that is in fact not the case. There might be a slight Delay from hitting the button in bloodborne but that delay is a far smaller than any of the other Dark Souls games, even Dark Souls 1. The sound cue from the Gunshot also tells you exactly where the Parry occurs. Given that I fully stand by what I said in the video. I also mention later on that because of how forgiving the Parry system in bloodborne is, it can lead to Parry fishing. when you do this you play lazily, and treat the Parry system as proactive causing you ultimately to play badly as you wait for and bait attacks that you can Parry.
@SrimeHD
@SrimeHD 4 жыл бұрын
Try it out for yourself. The parry in DS1 is 100% instant. It's not unreliable and since it's absolutely instant it's honestly even more reliable than Bloodbornes. I didn't address the animation because I don't necessarily disagree with you. It might be misleading for new players.
@ZerkMonsterHunter
@ZerkMonsterHunter 4 жыл бұрын
@@SrimeHD if you're watching the video you should probably note that I use Dark Souls 1 footage for all my Parry footage from Dark Souls; so I'm not going to disagree with you that's much easier to pull off in Dark Souls one compared to the other games, considering I literally cannot Shield Parry in Dark Souls 2 or 3 - the fact that I can reliably Parry in bloodborne, and not even in Dark Souls 1, I think still speaks to the strength of my point that bloodborne parry system is Bar None the best designed of the souls games.
@SrimeHD
@SrimeHD 4 жыл бұрын
As I said try it out for yourself and actually prove it if you want to claim that DS1 is less reliable. Your argument that Bloodborne must have the best parry system because you personally find it the easiest is a very poor one to be honest. I believe your footage speaks for itself. The parry system is "reliable" to you because you can spam it even from a distance while still interrupting attacks when shooting too early until you get a parry. I'd say that is a design flaw but let's not get into subjective territory. I'm just glad they added silver bullets so it's not completely broken.
@ZerkMonsterHunter

@@SrimeHD you're not listening to what I'm saying at all, whether or not the Dark Souls 1 Parry system is more efficient or more instantaneous than bloodborne's is pretty much irrelevant considering most of my argument stems from how the animation is misleading, and once you understand how it functions you have to plan for the delay, since there's no sound cute indicate when the Parry Point actually happens like there is with the gunshot in bloodborne, you have to keep track of the animation meaning your eyes are off of the enemies attack and instead on your character performing the animation it should be the other way around you should have your eyes on the enemy's attack and be reacting to it. Even if it is instant in Dark Souls 1 the presence of the sound cue is the really big thing here.

Bloodborne is the best lovecraftian fiction hands down. It actually does it better than Lovecraft himself.

Innsmouth and Call will always be more iconic, but bloodborne seamlessly adapts and transforms the ethos in all the right ways.

This is a great video about my favourite game ever made although, I do not really understand why it is important nowadays whenever someone talks about Lovecraft to mention he was racist and/or xenophobic...
@ZerkMonsterHunter

largely it's to prevent idolizing someone who was very problematic, even by the standards of his time Lovecraft was more racist than most. the concept is called "death of the author" if you wish to learn more
@tisf0

@@ZerkMonsterHunter yeah but by mentioning every time his name is uttered that he was a racist all people do is poisoning the well, it will arrive to a point that if someone uses lovecraftian mythos will be low-key associated with being a racist as well. What Lovecraft created was groundbreaking but in our times it is almost impossible to enjoy it without caveats so I don't think "the death of an author" exists his works will undoubtedly be killed as well with time. I am not attacking you, you do you, I'm just legitimately trying to understand and again your video was a joy to watch.

@@tisf0 The idea behind "death of the author" is to separate the person from the work, and directly separate Lovecraft the racist from the influence Lovecraft had on fiction. it's the exact opposite of trying to bring down or downplay his contributions, it's to understand that influential people can be very flawed, let them atone for their issues while letting their work stand on its own.
@tisf0
@tisf0 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZerkMonsterHunter yeah but unfortunately Lovecraft is dead so there is nothing he can do to atone, by focusing on his flaws it will soil his work people can't escape that because it has been repeated so many times, I for one have lost interest in even checking his work because everywhere I see his name it is followed by "he was a massive racist". I am not talking about you only but I've heard that a thousand times in the last few years.

@@tisf0 thank you for being civil but the fact that you seem unwavering about this leads me to believe you aren't reading what I'm saying and choosing to believe what you always have. *the death of the author is to separate the person from the work and allow the work to stand on it's own merits independently of the person who created them"*

Ayy this video is finally out! I may hate most of the souls games personally (Gameplay is personally annoying as fuck to me) but the lore of Bloodborne has always intrigued me, especially as a fan of Eldritch Horror.

give bloodborne a shot, it mixes up the gameplay in such a way that it is so much more fluid and intuitive compared to the rest.
