I wish people would stop saying they don't have enough range, that they aren't good enough yet. They don't have enough range for some people, perhaps you, but they do have enough range for many people. Same goes for the charging speed, yeah if you do exceed the range and need to charge mid-trip then it can be too long of a wait, but if you get something with enough range for your daily trip then at worst you'll just be popping it on charge when you get home and it'll be ready for the next day.

100% agree. I live in a large sprawling city. I easily do all my around town running on this bike. It is amazing good fun to hoon around on as well. Like most people who will spend what this costs it isn't my only bike. Just look at TMF's collection. Different bikes for different rides, but I have pushed the limits on this bike and with the 6kW charger it is easy to add a few miles while out and about. Nobody sits and waits for it to charge to 100%. Just grab enough to get you back home and scoot.

Range is only determined to the amount of fuel you put in ie £2 =1 ltr of petrol which gets you say 10 mile if you lucky ,the same £2 in a srf gets you 100-160 mile ,people do the maths , and most bikes sit in sheds & garages most the time ,best time to charge them, or if people did there home work rather than give negative comments (put 4 solar panels on your garage roof and charge for free ) ive done this before on a TC max (free motoring) , yes the cost is high 20k but compared to say indian chief 25k or duccati 23k or similar then the zero is not so expensive ...thank you and ride safe

Good coverage TMF. Acceleration on the lecky bikes is astonishing and terribly tempting. For me that's where It ends. Nothing else about electric convinces me they'll be the future without decimating more of the environment. 40 years ago all predictions pointed towards hydrogen as the only sustainable long term low impact fuel. And of course you can use the internal combustion engine with hydrogen. But there's no money in the most abundant element in the universe.
@karlosh92865 жыл бұрын
and you can use hydrogen in hydrogen-fuel-cells to generate electricity. Still need a small lithium battery to cope with the "peaky" demands of the electric motor. The fuel cell keeps the battery charged. I'm sure I read somewhere burning hydrogen in an internal combustion engine is only about 25% efficient, in electric fuel cells it's something like 60% efficient. The issues with hydrogen are (1) no current refilling infrastructure (2) compressing and decompressing it . ( heating up under compression, freezing under decompression. The way fridges work ) (3) as the smallest element it really likes to leak out of virtually all known containers . (4) if you do manage to get a build up of hydrogen gas in a garage or say inside a car it can go "pop" quite explosively (see the Hindenburg ). You can't smell it, so you need hydrogen gas detectors. (5) You have to generate your hydrogen from somewhere, electrolysis of water or some chemical reactions that still do produce CO2 . The hardest one of the above to solve is (1) lack of refilling infrastructure. But it is quicker to fill up hydrogen tanks than charging batteries, and doesn't pollute when it is being used ! All the hydrogen fuel cell cars made so far are very expensive, but they've been more prototypes than mass produced, so that could improve. I think James May is now trying to run a Toyota one, with around only 8 filling stations in the UK, so he'll need to make sure he has his AA Relay Rescue cover if he runs out.

My take on electric vehicles is that people don't suffer from range anxiety but from "recharge" anxiety. There are lots of ICE bikes with not much more than 100 mile range, but the difference is that you can "recharge" them in about 3 minutes. Electric bikes need fast charging more than they need range (a 15 minute recharge would be fine- time for a piss and a coffee, and stretch the legs)

I don't have a monopoly on being right! ;0) I checked my highway code as per your recommendation, article 185 point 21 (on roundabouts) says "when reaching a roundabout you should give priority to traffic approaching from the right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights". In this particular case I believe the driver made a late decision to pull out as I approached from the right, he may not have seen me, in any case I had to slow down and take avoiding action - something I think if he had done in a test (forced another road user to take avoiding action) would have resulted in a fail. Being at the roundabout first doesn't mean you don't have to give way to the right. Just my opinion and as I say I'm not claiming to be right about everything...

@@TheMissendenFlyer "when reaching a roundabout"... The car had already reached the roundabout. Sorry mate, but you were riding too fast for the environment you were in.. He was fully on the roundabout before you'd even arrived at the junction. Stop your video at 1:56 and 1:57. I think 3 phase charges a car to 80% in 30mins in theory. The bike batteries are less than 1/4 of the size. Also i don't the batteries are liquid cooled like on the car so 7kw for 2.5-3h is the best you can have.

The only problem’s going to be the demand for charging points on all roads. At the moment they don’t seem to be over-used but it won’t take such a dramatic upturn in electric car sales for it to become a real problem. Now with this fun bike having a 90 mile range, it falls straight into the charging point demand trap. This bike (and others) are going to have to get to a range of 250 miles before they’re a real option. Just a view! Wouldn’t mind a test ride though before the actuaries realise their error! At £20K it would be interesting for a runway drag strip competition, this bike, Triumph Rocket 3 (£20k-ish), BMW S1000RR ( or any 1 litre 200 BHP sports bike for around £20K)

My only concern in the ability to carry a pillion and luggage filled on at least a 100 mile distance before charging. there are more charge points in the UK now than there is petrol stations. But till the electric bikes can do what I need them to do then I am holding off till then.

Always appreciate your reviews and other vids well done. This Zero looks gripping. My question is based on a professional interest. I design and build 'alternative' portable generators for remote applications and have often been asked to supply charging systems for ev's. So far without success. The 'real world' numbers from manufacturers are hard to come by and ev owners are often wolley about these specs. In your experience do you know the cost of a full charge or can put a kwhr figure to a recharge, from your meter perhaps, for that ev bike? Probably going to attract some flack for the question but I'm used to that from both sides of the green divide.

I have an SR. The battery is 14.4 KwH. Here in the states I pay around 10-12 cents a KWH . So from absolute dead 0 it cost me about 1.45 to 1.75 to completely charge. Figure a riding range of between 100 to 160 miles and you do the math. Some places in the country pay up to 18-20 cents a KWH but these bikes run about 1 to 3 pennies a mile

If they are anything like electric cars ( nissan leaf or tessla) the the deprecation on £20,000 would means 3 or 4 years later you' d be lucky to get £4000. It's the confidence and batteries. Your right 5 to 10 years they may be future but still a way off. If you could get a small two stroke engine and put it in a ruck sack on your back, then you would get the smell the sensation and the noise and THE SOUL ID GET ONE. Was it like accidentally sitting on your electric tooth brush without your trollies on?
@BarryThompsonUK5 жыл бұрын
You need to check your research, early Nissan Leafs are actually going UP in value on the 2nd hand market, supply can't meet demand so they're holding value very well.
@judeoko5 жыл бұрын
Fraction of price its cost of batteries, a Mitsubishi phev not even getting 30% after 3 years. I was advised two weeks ago not to buy a Nissan but to lease as I asked about residual value. So from what I've seen and been told by a dealer they do not hold money. So £32,000 for a Nissan leaf, what is it worth 4 years old £8 or £9000 if your lucky.
@BarryThompsonUK5 жыл бұрын
@@judeoko All cars lose 50% value in the first three years, and the Leaf was the first real EV so public confidence wasn't there at first. Supply and demand has kicked in now though. Battery wise, aside from edge cases that have been treated badly most are still running 80/90% battery strength so the early worries about needing new battery packs at four years old simply isn't the case. You can fix the dodgy cells anyway, rather than replacing entire pack. Also, car dealers are under pressure to sell the petrol/derv models so it's understandable they'll be disparaging about EV.

Yes, crazy wicked next-level quick. I've owned and ridden seriously quick bike including electric but wasn't prepared for this. Whacking it open on my test ride I almost fell off the back. But it isn't just the acceleration. I hadn't realized how much I used engine sound to judge my speed. I'm getting better but nevertheless recently got a "performance award" from a local official when I wasn't even trying to. The range thing... It helps to drive an electric car first, at least it did for me. I learned through reading about "hypermiling" how to drive most efficiently. Cars have more detailed gauges and it's easier in them to fine tune your skills. Really it's all about preserving momentum and using regen effectively but only when needed. I made a game of it. When it comes to riding my SR/F (oh yes, I ordered immediately after the test ride) I've learned to ride very efficiently *until* I get to the fun bit of the road. The hardest part is having the willpower to keep the beast in its cage until I'm in a safe place. In my normal riding I get 100-110 miles range. With chargers all around town it's easy to plug in (usually free here) when popping into a store, restaurant, or even a gas station for a bladder break and a soda. The Premium version charges at 6kW. Batteries charge at full speed only when partially discharged. That last 20% takes forever so I never wait for it, only charging enough to get where I'm going. I average about 8 miles travelled for every kiloWatt charged so stopping for a 15 minute break adds about 12 miles range when I would be stopped anyway. Stopping for lunch adds quite a bit more. Nobody ever stands there waiting for it to charge to 100%. That only happens at home when your sleeping anyway. TLDR: It's different. You learn how to work with it.

@JLOSTAFF15 жыл бұрын
A range of 120 miles, so presumably with heated grips, your heated jacket plugged in and driving at night with lights you might get half that - dial in a pillion to reduce it further. These bikes will always be for the few in my opinion. How are people in flats, and houses with no driveways ever going to charge them? Then there is the issue if all vehicles are electric - the national grid will never cope!

When I got mine, it was obligatory to go launching up to 100 mph in short bits of road. I finally thought of a way to describe it. Its like falling, forward. You see, the rate of acceleration is nearly constant due to the on board management. When you fall, you accelerate 9.8 meters per second per second. There is no change in the rate of acceleration. So when you twist this up, some low level parts of your lizard brain think you are falling. Its up for debate how its experienced, but its not debatable that its fun. It is.
