I like that some things were not completely zero waste or eco friendly. I feel like a lot of these channels make it seem like you have to be miserable if you don't find better replacements. And I think it' important to at least try, something is better than nothing.
@bunnylovesapples4 жыл бұрын
You dont need to worry about it. There are some places where it is easier and cheaper to have a zero waste life style. If you are european you can menage to fulfill that lifestyle but in the US it seems to be pretty hard because everything is packaged so you have to go to special stores. The most important thing is that you do something and you dont have to succeed 100%. You are not a hyporcite for not beeing able to do 100% I mean even your lungs dont process 100% of that oxigen that gets into them by taking a deep breath. Just discover the zero waste world in your area. Reduce waste if you are able to and look out for things you can change. Also you can try to spread awareness and maybe make someone follow you by getting them interested. It is easier to have a change for the enviorment if many people do a bit and not a few do everything.

It’s a relief to see a couple of plastic items in your freezer. We buy a couple things packaged that way each month too, like strawberries and I feel so guilty about it sometimes! It feels like there’s so much pressure for perfection in the Zero Waste world.

Few tips, get the onions and garlic away from your other produce. The emit an odor that will make everything else go bad quicker. Also keep you scallions in a glass jar with water (also the lettuce) they will continue to grow and you can just trim off what you need. Same works well for asparagus, it can last for over a week in the fridge. Just change the water every few days. And your new place looks amazing!

You should try Maille Mustard. It's a French company dating back to the 1700s, though owned by Unilever since 2010-is(?). They were the first ones to make Dijon mustard. Their produce comes in glass jars with metal lids. I use them myself and honestly, never had better mustard.

@Megs2Dope5 жыл бұрын
@@miss_m_yt Equal parts yellow and brown mustard seeds. Enough liquid/vinegar to cover by an inch. Here's where the fun comes in...vinegar is a must for at least 50% of the liquid. You can use any vinegar and any other liquid you want really. Like...red wine vinegar and some red wine, or malt vinegar and beer, or anything you can think of. Let the seeds soak in the liquid overnight. I suggest hitting the mixture with a stick blender if you want smoother mustard as an end result. For whole grain mustard, don't blend yet. After the mix has sat for up to 48 hours in a cool shaded place and absorbed most of the liquid (depending on container size and shape you may have extra liquid after 48 hours, this can be drained off and reserved if the end product is too thick for your liking), blend the mixture in a blender or alternative with sweetener of your choice. I have used honey, sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, and even stevia. This is all a matter of preference. For a dijon texture mustard, use only yellow mustard seeds and blend extra well and strain. You can add flavorings like fresh horseradish, red pepper, tarragon, jalapeno. If it's in a specialty store, you can probably make it for cents on the dollar if you have access to whole mustard seed in large quantities. Sorry I don't have an exact recipe, I make it a bit different everytime I make it. And it does mellow the longer it sits.

While I don’t know of zero waste shops in my area, I do have something that I do with watermelon. After you have eaten your fill, put the rind through a blender or juicer. We have the same fridge!!! I absolutely love mine. The drawer at the bottom is perfect for prepped meals. Becoming zero waste has made me learn to cook a lot of things from scratch which is neat. Popcorn is my favorite example. A little more time cooking but grocery shopping is a breeze because the things I buy are really basic ingredients. I found an app for making sure you get all of your nutrients as a vegan. It’s designed by a doctor. It is a daily checklist of different necessary food groups. That app gives me ideas of what to shop for/cook to be healthy as a beginner vegan. Daily Dozen is the app. I might be the only one who didn’t know about it but thought I would share! Oh how I’ve crashed and burned being a new vegan and low waste. It was a huge change for this small town girl! You’ve helped me a lot!

If you want that mango to ripen I would suggest leaving it out on the counter a few days. Seeds and nuts last longer in the fridge or freezer but if you use it often then it is fine being stored at room temp. Another thing to consider is to keep them away from light and use air tight containers since that causes them to become rancid.

I recently discovered your channel and I love your videos! I feel that I have a story very similar to yours (I used to be a shopaholic... and literally have mom who I learned that behavior from and still is a shopaholic). Anyway, I have recently started on my low waste journey and from my actions, I have encouraged others to make small changes. I have a few coworkers who have noticed my little changes (metal/glass straws, silicone reusable bags for food, reusable menstrual products, buying in bulk with my own bags, etc..) and I have seen them start to do the same. I have also begun to declutter my home and sale excess things on Poshmark so that it can go to someone who can use my items. Recently, I took a trip back to Nashville with a coworker. We decided to grab some lunch at a local spot and when ordering our food they handed my coworker plastic utensils, she refused them politely and asked if they had any reusable utensils she could use. The staff were so accommodating and even made a comment about how "that is awesome that we are doing that". It was so awesome to see that my actions had inspired her and that maybe her actions had inspired someone else to look at what waste they are producing! Anyway, sorry for the long comment. I just wanted to say that I have really been inspired by your videos and you have really helped me in my journey to low waste/zero waste. Thank you for what you do! Much love from San Diego, CA!

A great trick for ripening fruit is to put it on the counter for a couple days in a brown paper bag (reusable of course) with an apple or banana; they release ethylene gas which ripens fruit, and the paper will keep that near the fruit you want ripened while still letting everything breathe. Also, if you're going through them quickly enough, try storing tomatoes at room temperature; so much more flavor! Refrigeration kills that umami

I live with my parents who (as the main drivers in the family) always do the most grocery shopping and after we moved into a 2. story flat where we have to store our 12 bottle crates in the basement, I got a second hand one immediately. We don‘t have to buy the soda from the company, where I live, most supermarkets and small cornershops take your used cylinder back and you get ones from local manufacturers who also reuse the empty cylinder. Maybe the quality of ones tap water is kind of important but I find that once it sparkles and has chilled in the fridge, it just tastes like good sparkling water (no matter what the tap water tastes like on its own, at my partner's, I never drink tap water but carbonated it‘s the same, and you also can adjust how sparkling you want it)

@Shannen Marie it's really useful. It also keeps the nutrients and vitamins longer. Especially on a vegan diet, nuts and seeds are super important

Have you ever tried or do you have a video on Azure Standard? I’ve not tried it but been interested for a while.

Do a "Life Before Plastic" interview with your mom or grandmother. You would be surprised by how much stuff got put in plastic. I think only Ritz crackers, Campbells soup, and tea bags are still in their original packaging. Laundry detergent (Tide) used to be in big cardboard boxes as a dry powder. Plastic was only really introduced in the 70's-80's, Tupperware was really the 1st introduction to plastic. I'm 40 and I still remember stuff not in plastic. I did buy the produce bags you showed, they do work really well and only one person gave me some weird looks. A walk through Trader Joe's produce department was a real eye-opener.
