I TOTALLY agree! It's all about adding in realistic actionable habits into our lives. I feel like when I got into it, I was really set on being "perfect" with it, and I just got mega burnt out. Honestly, if it wasn't for youtube holding me accountable, I probably would have just said "nah, not for me." And that doesn't work when we're trying to encourage others to make swaps too if they see it as extreme 💛

When I record a song, I let myself improvise and I often use the first take since that's where I'm the most passionate. I only stop recording if I make blatant and crucial mistakes or things really fly off the rails.

Incorrect, sustainable means doing something that will not hurt or impact future generations. If you were to be perfectly zero waste would be TECHNICALLY more sustainable, by helping the earth for future generations.

I keep my carrots entirely submerged in water in a large container and they last me weeks staying perfect and crisp! Totally recommend to anyone, as I wasted so many carrots previously to this hack...

Would love to hear more of your thoughts on the honey vegan thing. From what I've read honey is much more sustainable than honey alternatives such as agave. Especially since local bee keepers only take surplus honey and care tremendously for their bee colonies.

I've never understood why it isn't deemed sustainable/etc. The bees aren't hurt, in fact it helps to keep the bee population alive because someone's actively cultivating them 🤷

​@@josefinemas3029 My family's farm has beehives that are cared for by a local beekeeper. While I can't speak to the ethics of industrial honey production, I saw firsthand how well these hives were cared for and how the bees thrived. As someone who is otherwise vegan, I chose to continue eating locally-produced honey because I want to support local beekeepers and the honeybee population. Honeybees are more or less extinct in the wild in North America despite being a once-common native pollinator. They struggle to survive without human intervention because of colony collapse disorder, habitat loss, and an invasive predatory mite called Varroa destructor. The only practical way to insure that these valuable pollinators are still around is to raise them ourselves via human-kept hives. While it would be of course possible to have a hive of bees without harvesting honey, beekeepers do need a way to make a living. Basically, in summary: I support local beekeeping by buying and using honey because it's beneficial for the environment and a great way to support pollinator populations. I'd encourage other vegans to look into doing the same if they want to improve their environmental impact further :)

the average bee makes only 1/12 a teaspoon of honey in their lifetime. it's their food and what they eat. the point of veganism is not to use them or take away from them, just to leave them alone. they need their honey more than we do.

Look up how to grow a pineapple top as a houseplant. If you keep it alive for two years, (even potted indoors) it grows a mini pineapple you can eat. I know it takes two years but hey that is one less pineapple you’re buying two years from now!!! I’m currently growing one for myself and I started one for my friend as well. My cat has been chewing on them both so who knows if I’ll be successful!

I love that you always talk about that your zero waste lifestyle isn't perfect. I'm in the transitioning phase of it and obviously I try to find inspiration and tips as much as possible. But sometimes other KZbinrs make me feel bad for still having some plastic and some trash in my life and then I feel like I can't do it. With you I get the feeling of making the world a better place by at least trying and by that I feel way more happy to sometimes overcome obstacles to lower my carbon footprint in this world. i take it you're not a vegan then... Lets see, ''forcing'' viewers to go vegan vs. forcing the mass breeding, rape, slaughter and abuse of animals, whilst causing the biggest environmetal destruction through animal agriculture just because you like the taste of meat... Yeah, the ethical conundrums are a bitch. Vegans who care are just the worst... I don't want to sound mean but I'm defending the people advocating for the poor animals that can't fight for themselves, that you are basically against. Theonoi There was absolutely no need to reply to the original commenter with a tone of such condescension. The ability to buy vegan and plant-based food is very much a privilege that many people do not have. Not only that but many people have dietary restrictions that limit their ability to become vegan or plant-based.Baby steps are important to the sustainability initiative and the original commenter had no ill intent in what they said. Vegans like you are what turn people off from being vegan and give vegans a bad reputation for being mean and close-minded.

During 2019 I’ve made several switches towards zero waste, and I’m excited to find even more ways to reduce my waste in 2020! I live in a tiny town in Finland so there aren’t anything like bulk shops or things like that here which makes it a bit of a struggle. My town is a farming and agriculture town so even though I’m trying to lessen my meat/dairy/egg consumption, I feel a little better knowing most of the meat, eggs and milk I consume was produced very close to me. There’s also a thing around here called Reko, where farmers sell products that the industry doesn’t want or need. This is mainly things like cuts that the shops don’t usually carry, raw milk or ”ugly” eggs and vegetables etc.. So while I’m aiming towards being vegan in the future I also know alot of that would be going straight to the trash for no reason, which at this point in time bothers me more than eating it.

In general, we are doing pretty good in BC when it comes to less waste....most stores don't have grocery bags or at least charge for them...the change is happening. We're also pretty close to banning all single use plastic in Canada...here in BC most cities have already put the bans in place anyways.

One thing to keep in mind with produce bags. If you are planning to use a normal grocery store/use the till rather than self checkout, get mesh ones that you can see the items through. It's easier for the cashier if they don't have to open all your bags up

I have watched store employees separate bananas into singles for their customers who want individual bananas. So you may be perpetuating your store’s perceived demand for individual bananas by buying the individual bananas. It’s worth asking the produce department employees about.

I think at Fred Meyer the single bananas get put out as snacks for kids. They've got a table somewhere in the produce department with usually bananas and mandarins set out with a sign saying they're free for kids to snack on. Fred Meyer does a pretty good job trying to limit the food they toss. (I also like their discount produce program, where they mark down damaged, imperfect, or overstock produce to like a dollar a bag. The only downside is that the bags are a plastic mesh, so they kinda sucks, but at least they're not just tossing it.)

It's not about vegetables touching though. If you're buying in a supermarket you need to separate the produce for the cashier to weight them and check them out properly, different products have different prices obviously. I don't use a bag if I'm buying just a few bananas, they can go on the belt as they are, but think about something like cherry tomatoes :) Or two pounds of apples or something alike.

Dr Gregers says that taking B12 in multivitamins make really hard to the body to absorb, so it is better to take it sublingual after eating dinner, either everyday 250mcg, or once a week 2000mcg, ooor 1000 mcg two times a week :)

I have been trying to eat seasonally as well, and avoid far transported fruits. For Christmas break I went to russia and oh my goodness was it hard to find vegan things. I mean they have a lot of vegan stores and a few vegan restaurants, but regular restaurants don’t have any vegan s options at all except fries. Like Burger King didn’t have the impossible burger. You drink that aloe Vera juice since it’s inner fillet , I drink it everyday(but dilute it)

I don’t know if it’s a country-wide thing or just in my state, but giant eagle(big grocery store chain) is going plastic free this year! They are offering paper/reusable bags at a cost, or you can bring your own! So awesome to see a big chain do that. However so sad and disappointing to see so many people are losing their minds over it. “What am I supposed to do without plastic bags?” “I’m never shopping there again” literally over bags.... wild but cool to see a larger company doing this! Hopeful to see other stores follow suit

I second Sustainably's video on this - it's really something you don't wanna 'cheap out' on. Health > waste produced (plus getting an infection creates way more waste than using a single use protective item!)

I totally should do a video about this!! I believe in using condoms/protection (whatever brands/products are personally preferred to you) rather than being perfectly zero waste! I personally use a copper IUD for birth control because that's what works for me, but I think it's up to you to find a method that works for you! After my body overcame so many hormonal changes when I came off the pill and even more so when I went into recovery, I started to research hormonal birth control and decided that taking artificial hormones wasn't for me personally, so I tried the copper IUD and felt it was best for me. Honestly, I forget that it's even there too, which is nice to not have to remember to take a pill. I suppose it is less waste as well since it lasts for up to 10 years. So might be something to look into if it's feasable for you/works with your lifestyle. But I also support the use of other methods! I think it's important to do your research and then find something that works for you! "Femme Head" on youtube has some great info on non-hormonal options, but I'd also say be open to researching them all depending on your body/lifestyle. I think that there are lots of eco/minimalism/health bloggers that advocate for the FAM method (which I understand and love the idea of in theory) but I really think it's irresponsible to think/suggest that it works for everyone. (I do think that everyone should track their cycle to understand their body though! Even if just for 6 months or a short period of time or something. SO fascinating!!! I still do sometimes, even though I have the IUD.) I 100000% advocate for the use of the condoms and birth control of your choice because that's more important than being zero waste! There are some awesome vegan and more natural and ethical companies to support for condoms now too! "Sustain" is a really great one! I've seen them popping up in lots of shops too so they're pretty accessible! Hope that helps! :) xo 💛

I used to have the Mirena Coil, which is (sadly) plastic but basically my periods stopped for five years which was 1) magical and 2) meant I didn't need to use any period products which was great. Now I use reusable pads since cups don't work for me (I'm very, very small and have never had kids) but the coil was amazing for me.

hii! so i was wondering how i could use produce bags, cause we don’t weigh the food we put in bags, so idk if i could use produce bags, and if they aren’t clear/a lil see through i’m not sure if i could use them, could u help or something?

An another note, I used to take the same women’s one a day vitamin and after about a year or so I started breaking out in hives any time I took them. I found others had the same reaction. Hopefully this doesn’t happen with you but maybe keep some Benadryl (or similar) on hand just in case.

Just Des you can blend them up for oat flours and use them for baking! also making oatmilk (which is super easy), and blend them in smoothies for extra substance :)))

I feel silly admitting this but I’ve always been concerned about re-using jars because I never felt they were as “air-tight” as the ones with the rubber gasket. That and I could never get the food remains off the lid regardless of what soap I used or how hard I scrubbed. Have you noticed if your dry goods last longer in a certain kind of jar? Any tips for removing food residue from the lids? Do you have any other suggestions for repurposing glass jars aside from storing food? (Maybe another video 😁).

I haven’t noticed much! I scrub with my dish scrubber and they tend to clean up nicely, but I don’t think they’ll be high quality forever. Usually if I want something more airtight, I use a mason jar style lid 💛 Hope that helps!
