To be pedantic, a more precise translation of the legendary "All your base" line would be "With the help of the Federal Army, CATS conquered all your bases.". The context is that in the (very thin) Zero Wing plot, a Terrestrial/Galactic Federation signed a peace/collaboration treat of sorts with Space Pirates CATS, but these betrayed the Federation as soon as they could and, having easier access to the Federation's bases, destroyed all of them.

Putting aside the meme vs straight translation, there was a huge contrast in tone between the two version. CATS commander in the original was more jovial and affable, while the Earth Commander was more assured and faced his death with dignity. In here, the CATS were much more subdued and polite, and the Earth Commander was much more desperate.

He had good reason to be desperate they had saved their Zig units and didn't use them in the war because they believed they could have held off or defeated the Space Pirates. Until the Federation was almost wiped out. CATS had no idea a lone Zig Space Fighter would not only manage to turn the tide of the war but wipe them out.

I would do a much better translation of the game myself. Here is how I would handle the translation. (I would also add some awesome new lines to this introduction as well.) Narrator: "This is the future, and, in the year 2101, at the beginning of the Twenty-Second Century A.D./C.E., a remarkable event has happened for the first time in human history. Humankind has been receiving signals from unknown sources since the 1960s via radio waves and, as of the year 2100, one of them finally contained a message. One year later, this meeting between the inhabitants of the planet Earth, and the senders of those messages, had been agreed upon by the two parties. This is a retelling of that meeting". (A picture of a few men in a random space ship cargo bay is shown.) XO: "Captain, sir, some emissaries from the beings that had sent the signals to our planet have sent us a little peace offering, or so they said". Captain: "XO, has this cargo box been checked for all manners of harmful agents, including explosives"? XO: "Aye, Captain, sir, I even had the cargo box checked for the more unconventional ones, and they all came up negative for explosive materials". Captain: "Good, XO...anyway, are the emissaries going to meet with us aboard this ship"? XO: "Captain, sir, they said that they will be meeting with us shortly". Captain: "I hope that it is soon, because this is a monumental moment for humankind to experience...finally, humankind will have contact with other sentient life forms.
