I remember reading some years ago a well written and detailed article from a writer answering to the question of who is Zagreus' father. The reply to the questionin basically explained that despite of the old hymn/poem making mention of "Zeus" being Zagreus' father, because of the time period, context, and key words there's still plenty of room for interpretation and reading between lines to believe that Hades is, possibly, Zagreus' father. An example is the fact that the name Zeus used to be implemented as a title in ancient times; therefore Hades very well could be interpreted as the Zeus of the Underworld. Another detail that could hint at Hades being Zagreus' father is that the peom mentions Zeus taking the form of a snake, which is an animal associated with the Lord of the Underworld. I think there was more in the article but I can't remember. My personal reason (which doesn't matter and I'm just giving my opinion) to believe Zeus might not be Zagreus' father is that incest between a parent and their child (Persephone being Zeus' daughter) was sort of a rare thing in comparison to the commonality of incest between siblings. And another reason of mine is that while Zeus is dumb enough to anger his wife Hera by sleeping around as he pleased, I very much doubt or would like to think he wouldn't reach the level of stupidity required to eff around with someone such as Persephone. Someone who is Demeter's daughter and Hades' wife. Persephone was also known to be more severe than her husband in dishing out punishments. So, I just don't believe the King of the Gods to be the type to be playing around with something that would earn him the wrath of three very powerful and intimidating deities. These are just my two cents.

Hera is Zeus's sister and wife, Demeter is Zeus's sister and baby mother, and Persephone is Zeus's daughter, niece, and baby mother. Zeus definitely DID want to bang Persephone. He gave Persephone to Hades as a prize for his brother but mostly to spite Demeter because she wouldn't let Zeus bang Persephone. That's why he had to trick her twice. Also, Zeus is the King of Olympus and the strongest, I don't think he cares who he pisses off. Zeus killed his father. He doesn't care. Also, the myth says that Zagreus is not his only child with Persephone, they also have a daughter, Melinoë. Persephone was already married to Hades when Zeus took advantage of her. (There are many different versions of this Greek mythology but this is the well-known version)

@@Unseen-sd2co Zeus sits at the top of Olympus looking down over every God and mortal alike. He has all the power over everyone (every ruler has their limitations). I think you mean that other gods are physically and mentally stronger than him but not more powerful. Any other god who is more powerful than Zeus himself has been either imprisoned or killed. The only other gods who could even compete with Zeus were Poseidon (which rules the sea and all its inhabitants), Hades (which rules the underworld and all its inhabitants), and Hera (queen of Olympus and the Olympians). Meanwhile, Zeus is king of Olympus and ALL gods/men. It's hard to compare apples to oranges.

So there are multiple attestations of Zagreus, some of which name his father as Orphic Zeus. But other sources state his father is Zeus Chthonius, or Zeus of the underworld, one of the known epithets for Hades. Zagreus's own name is not even his own, leading to the funniest bit in the Hades game that had me cackling. Oh, it was peak mythology nerd humor.... You see, as with many (most?) gods, Dionysus had multiple origin myths. Zagreus, the version in which Zeus is his father, was said to have been slain and dismembered by Hera. His heart was then fed by Zeus to his mortal lover Seleme, giving her a literal food baby. But then Hera forced Zeus to appear before his lover with his full godhood on display, and it was too shocking (haha) for her weak mortal vessel to behold. RIP Seleme. So Zeus stuffed the fetus into his thigh and carried Dionysus 2.0 to term. And the game has Zag and Dionysus conspire and trick Orpheus into believing this version of the myth, giving a hilarious explanation for the Zagreus/Dionysus name conflation and the multiple attestations to Zag's parentage. I. Frickin. Died. So funny, the best joke in the game, and absolutely confirmed the devs did deeeeeeep research into Greek mythology for the game. Oh, it was so good on that front. Obviously, they created a very original story and premise, but there were so many deep cuts and references to more obscure myths and their variations (like Demeter's mortal lover, Iaision, which the game implies was Persephone's father to sidestep the rampant incest in the Greek Pantheon... Ugh, the research!!). So anyway. Mythology is cool, I guess.

Hey Jon! I’m a fan of all of your videos and I am going through and watching your Greek mythology playlist. I noticed that it says that there is 72 videos in this playlist but KZbin is only showing me the first 20 videos. Idk if this is just me but I just thought I should let you know just in case. Thanks for what you do!

This version comes from the Orphic myths, which are much more modern than the classic Hellenic ones and have many different versions of well known stories. Nowhere in classic greek mythology fo we find incest between parents and children. Should anyone know of such a story, please leave a comment here. I am an avid reader of greek myths and I have yet to find one.

This story is actually pretty cool and interesting. Also, I like that one line from either the Percy Jackson movies, or the new War\ Wrath of the Titans movie that goes something like: "But you're Zeus's son?" "Zeus has a lot of children, and not all of them are great heroes"
