Nice. the diesel locomotive is for back up power during the shakedown run since usually when a steam locomotive is done with its restoration it must do a series of trials and shakedown runs to ensure the locomotive is mechanicaly safe for excursion service and diesels are with the steam locomotives to help tow the locomotive back to the shops to be fixed if there is a minor or major problem associating with the locomotives mechanical performance.
Excellent video of the D51 200 with DE10 on Yamaguchi line 👍👍 Why are they double heading without a train and is it a test run for the D51?

Yah, it's a test run.

Yeah, it's a dry run for the regular service on weekends (for tourists) that starts on March 19. This isn’t a shakedown run in the sense that @TRAINGUY4466 explains, but a dry run just to make sure the D51 is in good-enough shape to take on the steep grades on this line. Trainguy is correct about the diesel-itself an antique-being there for backup power. Last year, while the D51 is the shop after a breakdown, it served in the D51's place for several months. Not sure how popular that was with the tourists, but the locals didn't turn out as much to wave to the passengers.
