In 1992, Belgium signed a joint communiqué with the PRC in which it agreed to "refrain from selling arms to Taiwan." This commitment has been reiterated by subsequent Belgian governments. There are some exceptions to this rule. For example, Belgium is allowed to sell non-lethal military equipment to Taiwan. However, the sale of combat gears is strictly prohibited. In 2022, Belgium blocked a Dutch company from selling submarine parts to Taiwan. This decision was made in accordance with Belgium's commitment to the PRC. It is unlikely that Belgium will change its policy on arms sales to Taiwan in the near future. The PRC is a major trading partner for Belgium and the Belgian government is reluctant to do anything that could anger the Chinese government.
