ジョナサン・ヘッド東南アジア特派員が乗ったフィリピン側の船は、少なくとも3隻の中国船に尾行され、その後、放水砲を浴びせられた。
負傷者は出なかったが、この海域における攻撃的な対立はこの1年で、よりひんぱんになっている。
中国とフィリピンの双方は、スカボロー礁（中国名・黄岩島）付近の海の領有権を主張している。
フィリピン政府はマルコス・ジュニア大統領の下、この海域での中国の支配に対抗するため、パトロールを強化してきた。
中国沿岸警備隊は、船が「侵入」したのを受け、必要な措置をとったとしている。

フィリピンも韓国にフリゲート艦を発注したり、トルコとインドネシアが共同開発した軽戦車ハウマウを導入するなど軍備増強を急いではいるが如何せん今迄の国防への投資額が少な過ぎて事実上1からの国防軍創設に近いのが現実（海空は殆ど泣きに等しい状態で陸軍は治安維持部隊の域を出ないレベルだった）。 なので中古の軍艦を日本国から提供は本来は有効な手段になり得るのだが肝心の日本国海上自衛隊の軍艦（護衛艦）から有力な物を提供出来る環境に無い。 なにしろ現代軍艦必須の装備VLS（ミサイル垂直発射装置）を備えていない昭和末期から平成初頭に就役した艦齢御歳三十数年になるあさぎり型護衛艦が未だ現役であり、その次の型のむらさめ型護衛艦はまだしばらくは海上自衛隊の主力艦として使い続けないといけない。 つまり海上自衛隊からフィリピン海軍に中古の軍艦（護衛艦）を提供するにしても型遅れの骨董品レベルになりつつあるあさぎり型護衛艦しかなく（同時期に建造されたあぶくま型護衛艦もあるがこれはより低性能でお話しにならない）、今更フィリピン海軍からしても骨董品レベルの旧式艦を譲られても困るのでは。 そこで中古ではなく新造艦を提供しては、と思う今日この頃でありまして、もがみ型護衛艦（FFM）を新造し提供する、あるいは海上自衛隊が新たに整備に着手する新型FFMが続々と就役し始めたら、もがみ型護衛艦を海上自衛隊から引退させフィリピン海軍に提供するのはどうかと。 もがみ型護衛艦も財務省のアホが予算をみとめなかった事で八番艦までVLSを装備しないで就役してしまったが、新たに装備させ近代化改修を行って提供すれば艦齢がまだ若いもがみ型護衛艦は末永くフィリピン海軍の主力艦としてお役に立てると思います。
