In the beginning of Edo period, the jobs were plentiful and the economy was booming. They could live without saving money, thus "Yoigoshi no kane wa motanai."("I don't keep money overnight.") The economy kept deteriorated through out the Edo period. The reason for the booming economy was that Samurai class was encouraged by the shogunate to spend money on building the new town, they hired many workers. Spending had slowed down specially after the opening of rice market(by 1700), which made the rice price half which made the income of samurai class to half as before(their salaries were paid by rice). By the end of Edo period the economy got so bad, you could find dead bodies of prostitutes floating in the canals.
