3:26 There is a term that was used in ancient China for homosexuality, and the term is "cut-sleeve". It has it's origin in a beutiful legend where some poverful man (Emperor even I think) had a male lover who felt asleap on his long sleeve and because he didn't want to wake up his lover he rather cut his sleeve. Word of Honor it just like The Untamed censored story of two male protagonists fall in love so this two scenes of one of them cutting the sleeve of the other are a little rebelion against the censorship that say "they are cut-sleeves" meaning "they are gay".

the cast, the costumes and the cinematography both in The Untamed and Word Of Honour is beautiful. I guess Chinese drama / movie makers have a rich culture and past to take from. I've seen both dramas and I can recommend both.

I'm a huge fan and booster of Word of Honor, one of the best dramas I've ever watched, from any country in any genre. I'm going to promote it like wild right now. This series had huge budget problems, ran into pandemic interruptions, and had to deal with censorship (though it feels like the censors might also have been big fans), but they managed to make something truly brilliant. It looks (mostly) beautiful. The direction is (mostly) great. The writing is outstanding, by a screenwriter who is a fan of the author of the original novel. And the acting is freaking stellar - the whole cast, but especially Gong Jun as Wen Ke Xing and Zhang Ze Han as Zhou Zi Shu. You must watch the whole series. Your life will be enriched. Like most stories in this martial arts genre, the plot is ridiculously complex, and there is a huge cast of characters, but the set-up basically is this (without spoilers): The Past: Twenty years before the start of the story, there was a huge war between martial arts sects over a McGuffin called the Glazed Armor, which is a glass thingie in multiple parts, and which had something to do with some guy everyone says was crazy and evil, and whatever the drama about that was, it all blew up in a mega battle at the Ghost Valley with a huge loss of life and nobody getting the Glazed Armor. Finding the Glazed Armor and figuring out what that old fight was really all about is a big part of the story. The Present: Zhou Zi Shu is the leader of the Window of Heaven, an assassin organization in service to a rebel prince who wants to become emperor. The prince has Zi Shu doing all kind of evil crap, and Zi Shu suffers a great many personal losses until he becomes depressed and despondent, burdened by guilt. He subjects himself to a torture method that is designed to kill him in an apparently very difficult to calculate but still short period of years. He then quits his job, disguises himself, and takes off, planning to wander around, suffering and drinking himself to death. Meanwhile, Wen Ke Xing is the leader of the Ghosts - this is kind of a mini spoiler, but since you already know it, I'll start at this point. The Ghosts are a mysterious gang of criminals, outcasts, and evil-doers who live in the Ghost Valley. They have been isolated from the martial arts world ever since the Glazed Armor fight twenty years before. All of a sudden, Wen Ke Xing announces that one of his sub-bosses has stolen his piece of the Glazed Armor, and he sends his soldiers out into the martial arts world to hunt down the thief. He also sets out into the world with his trusty sidekick whom he calls his maid, a young lady named Gu Xiang. It is extremely unclear what Ke Xing is up to. By happenstance or fate, Zi Shu and Ke Xing meet each other over a jug of wine in a town. Sparks immediately fly, but also more than sparks. Poor Zi Shu, who only wants to avoid public notice for the rest of his life, finds himself on Ke Xing's radar from which there is no escape. All that accounts for Episode 1, basically. Hijinks, mayhem, tragedy, romance, mystery, and drama ensue from there. Wen Ke Xing and Zhou Zi Shu are my favorite fictional pair ever. The sub-plots and relationships of the supporting characters are just as good and well written/acted, too. If you do decide to check out the series, I recommend watching the original Chinese company Youku's English subbed version, available on KZbin. For the overseas audience, they include six "special" episodes that include small but excellent scenes that were edited out by the Chinese censors, and Youku's KZbin version has better English subtitles than other YT channels or Netflix. The series is 36 episodes plus a 37th mini-episode epilogue, which Youku keeps paywalled, but can be found from other sources if need be. I strongly recommend watching EP. 37 if possible. I'm just a random internet stranger, but I'm not steering you wrong. This series is terrific.

I commented about my wishes for you to watch Word of honor edits so I'm grateful for this patreon request, the one who's dying is Zhou Zishu ,the retired leader of an assassin group, the reason why his ending is close is because he had to put seven nails in his body that would make him slowly lose his senses that was the only way that he could retire ,in fact he had plenty of time compared to others who tried to because since he created the method he discovered a way to do it and be alive longer. This all happens in the first episode already so it isn't really a surprised that he doesn't have an eternity to live. The one wanting revenge is Wen Kexing ,the leader of the Ghost Valley, which is a place to those who were disposed in a sense.(he's the one who's taller and tends to carry around his fan) Also they meet eachother and Wen kexing starts to following Zishu around since he feels like he's hiding his true identity, which is true. One of the reason I think we find chinese bl is since they have censorship they must find a way to make us see their love for each other not relaying on skinship, in my opinion I enjoy this type the most it doesn't matter to me if it's straight or not, seeing their love in gestures, the way they look at each other, etc. it's better than unnecessary s3x scenes. (spoiler alert) actually you guessed the old leader of the ghost valley killed wen kexing's parents and took him in so he prepared his revenge, he killed him and took his place and started his seek for revengeo n the other's to blame for what happened to his parents. At the end you can see Wen kexing with white hair that's because he basically gave up ,I don't really remember what i think it was like part of his vital energy or something.And they made us believe he dies there but there's the extra episode which is the real ending and we see them living in the mountain and battling like they did during most of the series

Their names are Wen KeXing (When Ka-Shing) and Zhou Zishu (Joe Ji-Shoo) nicknames Lao Wen (L'ow When) and Ah-Xu (Ah Shoe). Wen KeXing is the one who's from Ghost Valley ( you can see a hint of red in his clothing) and Zhou Zishu worked in the government.

Small corrections, Zishu is pronounced Zi-Shoo. The Zh makes the J sound, but the Z without the H just makes a Z sound. The Ke in KeXing is pronounced like Ker, but if you cut off the sound before you pronounce the R fully. Almost like a U sound but not quite.

Dang! How did I miss this reaction! You are spot on with the speculations at the end, that is what happened to Wen Kexing. There is a filter, but this drama is very gorgeous and vibrant color and saturation wise, so there's not much difference. This FMV pretty much sums up the entire series in a few minutes. I'm sure others have already explained your question, but here I go anyway, Zhou Zishu (alias Zhou Xu) is the person dying, and not Wen Kexing. He was the boss of an assassin group/secret police aiding the royalty and had to go trough a torture process that'll kill one within 3 years called the seven nails (literally, i.e. nailed himself in seven vital spots of his body over the course of a year). This group is named Tian Chuang (eng: Window of Heaven). He named it in hopes that this group will be the window that'll lead the Nation to better days but becomes disillusioned (and loses his brother and sect members in the process). This is why he chooses to leave and die as a free man. He becomes a homeless vagabond living in the streets but somehow a super shameless flirt of a man latches onto him and stalks him everywhere going "you're so beautiful! your shoulder blades are so exquisite!" much to his chagrin. On top of that he somehow becomes the parental figure of an orphan boy. His stalker comes with a girl (sister/daughter) as well, so now he has this ragtag found family of four following him around.

I loved your reaction Todd! Very thoughtful and filled with genuine curiosity and appreciation for Word of Honor. It's a great series that captures the audience for varying reasons. I fell in love with the characters, their development, the costumes and overall storyline (although the end was rushed a bit due to their budget). Ive now watched it 3 times, its become a comfort series for me. Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexings warmth and care for each other is so soothing to me. Once again, thanks for the great reaction! More BL content/ reactions would definitely make me a regular viewer 😃

Not sure if anyone ever really answered your question... I will try to keep it simple. Zhou Zishu was the king's assassin. After the last person in his clan died, he wanted to leave the king's service. He knew that the only way of doing it was his own death. So he decided to use the Nails of the Seven Apertures for Three Autumns. This is his clans torturous way of allowing it's people to leave the clan and It usually ends quickly in their death. It requires seven nails to block a persons meridians; which makes them lose their martial arts and the ability to move or speak. Then they die. Zhou Zishu discovered that if he inserts one nail every three months it allows the body to adapt to the nails. However, he loses half his strength in his martial arts and has only three years left to live. He then goes to the king and quits, showing the nails so that the king knows that he has no choice but to let him go. Zhou Zishu hopes to use the last three years of his life to live normally, if he can given the damage and pain that the nails have done to this body that only gets worse with time. ... Then he meets Wen Kexing.

wen is the super pretty one with the fan and the revenge thing is this super deep plot related thing. but omg this series is amazing, its so gay. a little hint: the way their sleeves got cut multiple times is a DIRECT reference to a very famous gay story about how an emperors lover fell asleep on his sleeve, so to not wake him, he cut his sleeve. so when in Chinese series a man cuts his sleeve, its a very DIRECT gay reference. and in this series it happens ALOT which had me and a friend squealing because THEY DID THAT

KEXING’S parents were god doctors in this universe but they got killed by protecting their families. Wen was used to be a young master but end up being a hostage of ghost valley.

this edit is 100 times more BL then the drama itself...the drama wasn't even BL but gave the vibes and this edit filled the gap...and yeap i've watched this edit before too this is beautiful...specially when you watch the edit after finishing the drama...you will feel every word they say,,,the meaning behind them warms my heart...Zhou Zixu's "Since my soulmate is gone nothing else matters" sentence never Fails to make me feel emotional...the amount of pain he had behind this sentence,he even embraced the death for his soulmate,,,he gave up on the remaining time he had left for the sake of them which he was cherishing all of his life And Wen Kexing,?he was a Crazy....that's it!
