This raga helped me get through a night of sadness and personal termoil. It reminded me of the sublime, the eternal and the vastness of life. What is one night of hardship for one person when the entirety of existance is outside your door to be witnessed. To be grateful to have a chance to see moments in time; never to be repeated and never to be experienced by another living thing makes the lows worth while. Get out of your own head and look outwards to the beauty in the fabric of life.

@George Makedon Indian classical music is devotional offering to Hindu deities. Muslims clearly and obviously do not devote their performance to Hindu deities. Historically they played it for the sensual pleasures of the Mughal rulers and their harem, and now for a livelihood. Notes may be the same, but the interpretation of its purpose isn't Hindu in nature. I consider it Islamic.

My wife and I were lucky enough to see Z. Dagar when he was visiting artist at the University of Washington in the late 70's-early 80's in the Ethnomusicology Dept. The free concerts in the small auditorium are precious memories. We had no concept of the cultural heritage involved but it was intuitively obvious that this was something very special. Time seemed to slow as standing waves of sound permeated the room. We happened to be in a museum-palace in Udiapur and there was an exhibit with a veena and a printout story about the Dagar family as court musicians. What a coincidence.

A very special recording. Majestic. Exceptionally beautiful and truly awe-inspiring. A masterpiece. I see Indian classical music as nothing less than the pinnacle of humankind's artistic endeavor. It should be celebrated as such and carried forwards as a flaming torch of what we are capable of as a species and as individuals; as a measure of the depth of the human soul. All of life is contained within it.

@Lazarus Read Unpredictabiliy maybe? I notice that when I'm listening to improvised music I tend to think of ways to finish a verse or of a next verse. I wouldn't say that it's a deficiency in either music form but it's a difference, and depending on the person listening it could be a deviation from the norm

It hasn't always been absent in Western classical. In fact it played a large role until the late 19th century. Bach, Mozart and Beethoven were described as incredible improvisers who amazed audiences with the complexity of their improvisations. Beethoven regularly took part in so-called piano duels where two pianists improvised for a while and the audience decided who won. The famous first movement of the Moonlight Sonata is an improvisation that he wrote down afterwards. As classical music became more and more complex harmonically and as composers started to be less involved in the actual performances, improvisation became less common. Liszt was probably the last great composer who improvised publicly. In some avantgarde music of the 20th century (Stockhausen for example) performers are encouraged to improvise again but it's rare.
@WIMVDMEER3 жыл бұрын
@@hansmahr8627 It is an ever returning story backed by extensive literature that 'western classical' also knew improvisation. And Indian music has often been compared to jazz, a family of music that has an important element of improvisation. However, it is a fallacy to think that all improvisation is alike. Improvising within a raga is something very different from improvising within a theme.

In depth, simplicity and swara- concentration this Alap and Jod in Iman surpasses all other vast and complex alap renditions of Ravishankar and Imarat Hussain Khan (surbahar) that I have heard so far, or at any rate, by any instrumentalist of Indian classical music like Annapurna Devi or Mustaq Ali Khan who has adhered to the veenkar style and manner of playing their instruments. It is a dream-like journey to eternity on soft waves of sculptured sound. This is to remain one of the 5 supreme performances in alap for Indian classical music that I have ever heard , including the vocal performances of the earlier stalwarts Faiyaz Khan, Sharafat Hussain Khan and the great Dagars.
