Their tranformation from when they filmed the video for "I Will Follow" to this was amazing. In 1980 they were just kids, by the time of this concert in 1981, a mere one year later, they were rock stars.

I remember collecting bootlegs of early U2 shows in the mid-80's, never imagining of a thing called the internet giving me the videos of these early shows. When they came to the US, I recall that they opened for the J.Geils band. When I saw them in 1984, the Waterboys was opening for them. Tickets were really cheap, too!
@creekandseminole7 ай бұрын
My aunt saw them on the October tour here in Oklahoma City. They played at Oklahoma University college in one of the gyms.
@Zepster774 ай бұрын
You are correct about them opening for J. Geils Band. A friend of mine went to see them (J. GEILS) in Tallahassee FL and came back with killer stories about that concert. About how no one could hardly understand what Bono was saying between songs because of his thick accent. But finally my friend deciphered that he was exhorting everyone in the somewhat sleepy crowd to GET UP and DANCE.

MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom

IMO, best period in a band are the early years. The sound is more real and natural, songs are more direct and simple, and members play with more energy and illusion. When a band starts to acumulate fame, money, concerts and albums, all tends to turn tedious, artificial and very monotonous, and you begin to notice their fatigue and that the band starts to lose that freshness they had at their beginning.
@Jiskefetisvet3 жыл бұрын
Well said, guess you’re right. To get to the top is not easy, to stay there..complicated
@jonesjones70573 жыл бұрын
Well said. "Tedious" is the perfect word for it. You know they are trying to do their best but ultimately it's got to get tedious.
@dmfglobal132 Жыл бұрын
This comment doesn't apply whatsoever to U2 though. It's certainly your right to enjoy the earlier albums better than the later ones, but do you really think masterworks like Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are tedious, artificial and monotonous or lacking in freshness? Come on my friend! U2 has had an unparalelled career of artistic growth and to try and elevate their earlier works by dismissing their later output is patently ridiculous.
@steves78966 ай бұрын
Hand in hand with that freshness you speak of is creativeness and originality. That's not to say that the other incarnations of U2 through the years were bad. But yes, these early years are easily the best of the band!
