My guess is that the trick is not in the gadget.... the real trickery is in the deck of cards.... be weary when the magician says,”this is just an ordinary deck of cards”..... the front and back are.... but the rest are not (I’ve never done this trick, but this is a guess)

Purely logically speaking, it's strange how the middle section can be slid to the side without actually sawing through the entire deck. :P
