First time I heard this was on the "Jackie Brown" opening credits by Quentin T.I'm a drummer and this groove made me stop everything I was doing and dig his Hi-Hat accents,kick drum pattern and the bridge kills me.I'm amazed everytime I hear it.

Totally underrated drummer. Always loved his playing with the meters.

BEST DRUMMER EVER! (personal note) No one can play these syncopated licks like JOSEPH did. He and GEORGE were the masters when it comes to FUNK no questions asked! Live performances around late sixties and early seventies are impossible to find from this legendary funk group (THE METERS). So this is what we true "Funkateers" will still our funk hunger at, not at all this earthy way of groove they played back then but it got some serious funk though.

I've been fascinated by this groove since I first heard it as a kid. I have Dennis Chambers' DVD "Master Drummer" (great DVD) where he discusses and plays this groove. He plays it with one hand on the hi-hat. He didn't sound as funky as Zig does here. I think the two-handed method adds something special to it.

This young handsome fella is definitely the future of drumming....oh wait, he's been playing since the 60's. Haha, he has quite possibly influenced more drummers than Bernie Purdy has. =)

The thinking behind Zig's drum pattern here, is very clever indeed-He's taken a basic New Orleans, shuffle roll played only on the snare drum, then he's removed parts of it and substituted it with the bass drum instead to give it a more 'linear' fee, and of course moved the virtually all the roll to the hi hats. A lot of drummers wouldn't dare to play it like Zig, because they'd be terrified of not grooving enough to drive the band, so they merely revert to playing shuffled sixteenths on the hi hat with only the right hand. Trouble with this approach, is that it makes the hi hat pattern TOO snappy. Zig's the owner of this beat and I've not heard anybody touch him yet...

Kind of interesting that he hold his left stick backwards... I've done that for a long time, starting when I played in a reggae band for a few years. It made the click louder, but I got used to it when playing the full snare. I always thought it was kind of a bad habit and tell my students not to. But it seems to work for Zig.

@fflychameleon6 жыл бұрын

@chochemerlyn12 жыл бұрын
@cragnog Just a tiny bit slower than the original recording, but people usually end up playing this way too fast and lose the whole feel of the tune, not to mention the beat's usually not right. I'd rather hear this a bit laid back, in between the cracks and funky than faster, too straight and rushed, which would never happen with Zig on the kit!
@rowepiece3711 жыл бұрын
that crowd needs to loosen up a bit and share in the groove!
