Mark Gatiss is correct. "Big Ben" is the name of the bell housed inside the tower not the tower itself. The current name of the tower is The Elizabeth Tower (previously called St. Stephen's Tower). Despite it not being the name of the tower, many people frequently refer to the structure as being "Big Ben." With the exception of this posting, I have given up on correcting people because they persist in being wrong.
