What I got from what he was saying is that money is not the inspiration or motivation for his work even though he earns from it. But if he didn't, he would still have to survive, so he would pursue something else like farming, or anything else that would allow him to survive because ultimately it's about survival. With the answer he gave, it's obvious that he's not just trying to live off the trust fund from his father's estate, but is also trying to build a legacy for his own children that demonstrates survival.
