Zillion for the Sega Master System is a great adventure game that sees you rescue captured comrades and overthrow the evil plans of a hostile group called the Norsa Warriors. It's an incredibly challenging action platformer that is packed with puzzles and problem solving that I personally enjoyed overall. I often hear it compared to Metroid for the NES, but apart from the bookends of both games, I just don't see it. 🍖

Dude, not even its own sequels could equal the quality of this game. I just got done showing my kids a playthrough of this game and they were so impressed by it. I spent hours and hours mapping the whole game out with graph paper when I was their age. I'm so thrilled to see other people loved this game as much as I do.

Loved this game as a kid, still remember picking it up from Woolworths :P In hindsight, it's a total knock-off of Impossible: Mission, (made even more obvious when a really good port of Impossible: Mission was released on the Master System a few years later) but I suppose you could call it a proto-MetroidVania in some respect. Zillion II was utter trash though. There's also speculation that the game Assault City was originally meant to be Zillion 3, after Sega realized they were doing heavy promotion of their light gun in the Zillion anime, but didn't have an actual Zillion light gun game.

I wish I had been into Master System when it was new... I'm jealous! I haven't yet played Impossible Mission but I did pick it up a few months ago. I'm so slow at getting through my games, but knowing I have more Zillion-likes to experience is an exciting prospect. I'm horrible at Zillion II... I can't get very far into the first stage (? not sure if that's how the game's broken down), but that's interesting about Assault City. I was wondering if there was a Zillion game released later on that used the actual light gun, even on the Genesis or something. Definitely a missed opportunity.

I played Zillion in 1988 on my SMS, since then, I'm a huge fan of the game. Never seen the series except for one or two episodes. Zillion is a fantastic game, with very high replaying factor. I played and beat it countless times, draw own maps, invented fantasy terms for the 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 cards (6 was "shuttle", we called it that in 80s). Oh, I miss the good old gaming days, I miss my childhood friends from 80s, too... was a simpler time. Sniff. Nostalgia for the win! \o/ :D SMS and Zillion rules! :)

Hey HG thanks for another insightful video. I think a lot of good Sega Master System games were like this a few bad parts but a lot of,good ones too. I think they did random codes because of programming and space constrictions. I never programmed for the Master System but I know most cartridges held 128,000 bytes of data. Less than 10% of a 3.5” high density floppy. If they used an array of fixed codes they’d probably use 5% or more of their storage on the cartridge just storing the codes. Trade offs had to be made in those 8 bit days. Thanks again HG it was fun to watch you stream this game.

Do you mean the codes? In most rooms you enter, there are multiple containers that you need to blast open to reveal a 4 digit code. You put that code into the computer to do one of many things: drop a laser barrier, open a locked door, etc. There are a bunch of codes in the manual as well that do other things too but most of the time, you need to reveal the numbers in order to move forward.

If you think Zillion on the Master system has catchy music, watch the actual anime. Master system Zillion is just a chiptune of the Anime intro and it's actually really good but once you hear the actual music with the Japanese vocals....your brain will never let you forget you heard it.

The manual's definitely a must. I find I'm all out of sorts without it for most games, but it was especially helpful here with the map outline, the codes, and basically how all of your stats impact your exploration and resilience. This game has a very weird nostalgic feel to it. Impossible to describe why this game is memorable because logically this game isn’t that great. Litterly five different “enemies” only. Electric fields, mines, nohza soldiers that are all the same, sentry guns, and an admittedly bad ass xenomorph final boss that would make contra proud. But that’s it. The music is the same. The computers are tedious to use. The game can be too much of a maze and it’s easy to get lost. No save system. But something about this game is very memorable.

I absolutely loved this game. I never actually played it during my childhood with the Master System, I remember seeing Zillion II in the rental store and it never appealed to me, so when i DID finally play this it would've been about 2011, it was a pleasant suprise! Often times I try and immerse myself in the time period something came out, try and imagine what it would have been like to own the game in 1988 for example, and I can only imagine being blown away at that time. I think I only got about 1/3 of the way through this so I plan to come back to it one day. Also the code being mirrored numbers, I didn't know when I played it, I found this out a few years later! I had names for them all, 'infitity, heart, M etc" I especially liked the Opa Opa and Light Phaser making cameo's I like it when Sega did that. I would love to hear an FM Sound Unit version of the soundtrack for this. That uses a YM2413 chip. I recommend the Zillion anime series, songs of which are present on my channel. The song that you like is 'Saizensen'; it is the instrumental version of 'Break A Trap For Yourself'. This song is not on my channel because copyright bots; I already got dinged for putting 'Pure Stone' up, although that was mysteriously restored months after I protested and asked them to put it up again. One of the most annoying things about this game is having to duck every time you get in line with an enemy in order to avoid getting hit. I sometimes just crawl on my belly like a snake instead of bothering to walk. That is a major pet peeve of mine.

I've been meaning to watch some of the Zillion anime just to see what it's all about. I checked out an episode back when I made this review and liked it, but the music is also one of the best parts. I'm glad your copyright situation got resolved. I thought crawling along was actually pretty funny, especially because how fast they crawl. It's like they have little wheels on the front of their suits to help them roll along or something! I hear you though... it does make the game a little bogged down in some spots.

Yes! There's a whole cool anime that I haven't seen yet, but I had a hard time figuring out whether the game or the anime came out first. I think they were a hand-in-hand thing from the impression I got. It's interesting because the only thing that really changes throughout the game is your ability to open up more kinds of canisters as you level up the gun... you don't get any other real powerups or new skills. The only real limiting factors are your flimsy early defense and how many cards you have in your inventory that you have to find. If you were super good, as long as you level up your gun and had enough cards, you could get to the end of the game right from the beginning.

Although I can see why people were excited by the C64 original, the Sega adaptation of it post-dates the release of the Genesis in 1989 and (thus, IMO) deserves to be condemned outright, as just a terrible game.

Even though I played more the sequel in my teens, "Zillion II, The Tri Formation", this first game remained as a serious challenging fun that I play sometimes in emulation. I had the very same frustrations that you had on the gameplay, and I think the game was expertly designed for the player to fail many times. It isn't a very original game, it moves further on what Impossible Mission brought before. The fact that it has three playable characters is something that precedes Castlevania III (NES), and I think it's the best contribution that "Zillion" gave to the side-scrolling adventure genre.

I really need to play Zillion II some more. I was stuck for the longest time in that autoscrolling section right at the beginning but I haven't been too far past that yet.

5:09 You do actually have to get all 3 characters. One of my problems with this game is that I accidentally got to the last room without all 3 characters as it is open ended. Nothing will happen unless you get all 3.

See, I had read somewhere that you can beat the game without them but that you just get the "bad ending". So when you got there, you just couldn't do the final sequence? That's unfortunate!

@@hungrygoriya You know the boss that appears after the monitor room right? If you go to the monitor room, nothing happens if you don't have all 3 of your party members. It won't let you activate the self destruct timer. Perhaps there was a way to complete the game without all 3, but I could not figure out how to activate the timer.

@@whitesundreams7822 Interesting! I found them both on the two times I made it to the ending sequence (I blew myself up one time not getting out fast enough because I was panicking, haha) but that's really neat to hear. Thanks for clearing that up because I was pretty puzzled!

@@hungrygoriya Are you planning to play Zillion 2? It's nothing like the first game, it's much more action oriented.

@@whitesundreams7822 I definitely will at some point. I've tried it out a bit and can't get out of the first stage, so it's not boding well for me!

Fantastic review as always. I look forward to actually trying this one, especially since I realized that you had to map it! Always a fan of making maps 👌

What an excellent game! I had heard this game was the Master System's answer for Metroid but couldn't really get into the game play and wasn't sure what I was really doing. I watched your video, said, ahh, now I get it and I couldn't put the game down. Ton of fun but quite complicated finding your way and I'll admit I used an online map but next play through I'll pull out the pencil and paper and do it myself. I will say it is a bit annoying that they reversed the jump and shoot buttons but it's not so action heavy that I couldn't get used to it. Thank you for the review.

It takes a little getting used to, that's for sure! I'm glad to hear you came around on it and eventually crushed it! No shame in using online maps either. I'm a sucker for making my own but I ran into a couple of roadblocks with this that really had me wishing I'd checked one online, especially in the lowest region! The reversed controls really confused me too, even after playing for many hours. It's not something I can easily get to stick in my head!
