This is one of the games I got when I started collecting SMS games again, back in 1998. I hadn't heard good reviews about it at all, and I finally gave it a shot one rainy afternoon. I was able to beat the game on my first try, which felt great because I pretty much suck at videogames and I don't have the time or patience I used to have when I was a kid, so it was a great experience overall. Danan is now one of my favorite "unknown gems" for the SMS. Great accurate review and love your videos! :)

One again, you pull out a Master System game I've never heard of, I love learning more about the system's library, even of this one ended up being a little mixed. It would have made an awesome early-90s manga tho. And I may have some insight into the out of place quotation marks: in Japanese text, especially in games at the time, it's common to use brackets like 「this」to denote important words or names, there really isn't a direct equal to this in English, so I feel the localization team subbed in quotation marks as the closest English equivalent [DISCLAIMER: I am not a native Japanese speaker, I am only studying the language, if I'm incorrect, someone please let me know]

I’ve had this picture for years, and wondered whether or not it was an actual screenshot from a real game or just something mocked up. It’s danan and Linda, with a text box that reads “life for life’s sake has no value without honour.” I always thought that was a really worthwhile thought, and I’ve used it in a variety of ways. I’m really excited to see not only where it originated from, but also that whoever made the game seems to have had more on their minds than just pounding out another simple action game. I really need to get some master system games together and finally give them a try!

It's an action Platformer with a heavy amount of text and conversations that beefs up the story line to give you this false illusion that your character is in for one hell of a fight when in reality the game's ending and story fizzles out 5 times as quick as when the story opens in the beginning. I have not played Danan for a very long time but I had a go at it today and managed to just make it to the end in one sitting and finish it. I had only 1 health number remaining on my last try. I remembered with the stage 2 boss, (the Moralos Clan leader) there was a trick to hitting him, you have to jump over him and give him a slash otherwise he just blocks all your stabs with his battle shield. The stage 3 boss was easy, the guy that gave his life to Emperor Wolf in the ship, he swoops down every now and then for a free hit at him. It's an okay action/platformer probably rate it 6 out of 10, it's not a bad game but by no means is it great and it's fairly short.

It really wasn't a hard game at all. I also finished it in one sitting, but it at least creates something a little deeper than a pure action game with no story excerpts.

I can explain the weird quotes thing. In many Japanese games, important objects, places, and even people may be in their version of quotes. (i.e. 「ダナン」) This is done mainly to help with readability, much like the addition of spaces or punctuation which are also not native to Japanese. It's a well accepted practice that comes across as odd in a literal translation.

Oh man, I still have to play this one! In the last couple of years, I've played Cadash, Legendary Axe and Alisia Dragoon trying to find more of these types of games - if it's not a tedious indie Metroidvania, and it stars some badass fantasy warriors on an epic quest wherein they have to hack and slash their way through loads of magical creatures and monsters, I want to play it... even if it's not quite good enough to achieve "cult classic" status, like it sounds Danan doesn't. Still, it definitely seems good _enough_ to check out for for a retro fantasy action junkie like me. Quotation marks are used in Japanese, and most Asian languages to mark important words, to tell the reader it's where they should focus. Like we in the West use bold fonts, or change text colour. Holy cow, look at that hitbox at 3:03! You were like 3 feet away from that guy - just the threat of being stabbed caused the bad guy to take damage! And of course, just before that, you stabbed someone and touched them with your hand while the knife is buried in the baddie's stomach - oops, that hurt you! With the huge swings in boss difficulty, it makes it seem like this was a school project that got last minute funding. Looks mediocre at best. Why just a dagger lol Interesting to watch tho, I dont think this was released in Australia

I was totally hoping there would be more weapons available. That knife was a real challenge and none of the enemy hitboxes made much sense. I think it might have just been Europe? I know it definitely didn't come to North America.

It was released in Australia. I don't have it but I have seen it a couple of times in collecting

@@Miakel Do you think you'll pick it up when you see it next?
@Miakel5 жыл бұрын
@@hungrygoriya yes, for the right price. It's on my list. The game is a rarer one though so it's a bit more expensive.

Wow... yea it must be rare, i know i have never seen it. Whats the avg asking price down here?

Im going back thru your old reviews I havent seen yet. Hey, maybe itll boost the algorithm if I leave a comment! So - This looks kind of like a cruddy version of NES Rygar with even more annoying arcade features!
@hungrygoriya10 ай бұрын
Awww that's very nice to hear! Thanks for checking out the older stuff. Compared to Rygar, Danan is super stiff and bulky. Rygar's like an olympian gymnast in how he jumps and moves. But yeah, I agree with your breakdown here, haha

Why oh why couldn't Rastan have these graphics. If you made Rastan into a game like this but polished it and finished it better than this game. Man, Just think of the legend Of Rastan Saga on Master System. Oh while we are at it put in some FM chip synthesis.

All good points! I haven't played Rastan yet, but from what I've seen, it looks pretty janky!

@@hungrygoriya It's okay. It's better than you think. It just doesn't live up to the arcade in graphics. The gameplay is quite nice but it is also a rogue like game. You die you gotta start over.
