Good video and hope one of the mighty garrets is preserved in working order. It is sad to see the run down state of a once very active railway.

Thanks David. Sadly they've started cutting up the stock of old locomotives. I suspect the nearest we'll see to preservation is a dead loco sitting inside what passes as the railway museum, just round the corner from the shed.

"In a fairly poor state". Zimbabwe used to be called Rhodesia, the bread basket of Africa. Its farms produced enough food to more than feed its citizens, with even more to export. It was a rich country by African standards. Then along came Mugabe and his group of thugs. He confiscated the well run white owned farms, sometimes committing murder, and handed them over to non-farm cronies. Now they depend on food handouts from the west, which the thugs steal and sell on the black market. Zimbabwe is a laughing stock, selling 5 trillion Zimbabwean dollar notes for ten cents each. Poor state indeed!
@AndyDandanFisherSteam7 жыл бұрын
A clever double use of the word "state" that hadn't occurred to me! Thanks. The danger now, though, is that Mugabe has been replaced and the new regime is going to want to demonstrate how it's going to modernise the country. I fear that one of the first demonstrations of this will be the disappearance of the the last few Garratts. We'll see.

Queensland railways (on same 3'6" gauge) has a garret but are finding it too difficult to back into operating condition for its historic division. Too guess expensive to repair. It last ran in the 90's I think. Wonderful to see similar engines still running. I was in Bulawayo In the 90s and was amazed at the amount of working steam. I'm more amazed to see them still working. Politics to one side, this workers must really know their stuff to keep such large machines still going.

It's getting harder by the day to keep these beautiful Garratts working. They have a stock of rusting examples which they use for spares but, of course, it tends to be the same spares needed each time and the supply will soon run dry. It looks derelict all over the place, when I visited Bulawayo in 1994 the regular use of steam on the main line had just ceased, but Bulawayo shed was still full of activity as the Garratts were used in all sorts of local freight, shunting and station pilot duties. I fear too that preservation lies in the hands of countries outside Africa, luckily one each of both classes shown here were bought and shipped to New zealand where they will become the largest steam locomotives to run on the mainline in the future. A number of locomotives from South Africa went to NZ as well, but some of these will remain static exhibits as they are to big for NZ's loading gauge, like the class 25. South Africa is becomming a difficult country for railway preservation as well, it now all depends on privat persons putting in the money and effort, and security of the assets is a huge problem.
@AndyDandanFisherSteam6 жыл бұрын
It's a very worrying situation in Zimbabwe right now. As you'll know, there's recently been a dramatic change of leadership and it's almost certain that the new president will be looking for ways to modernise. The dozens of Garratts that are lying around Bulawayo shed are an easy target - and they'll bring in some cash for scrap metal. I fear the worst, I'm afraid. Andy

I agree that steam locomotives are bad polluters. Most of what you can see in the smoke, though, are the particulates which fall to the ground rapidly. The real damage is done by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. These are given out in just as large a quantity by road vehicles, aircraft, ships and power stations. There are only a tiny number of steam locos left working and they are beautiful and fascinating machines. They are a valuable relic from our industrial past and need to be saved from destruction. The pollution from these few steam locos is TINY compared to the pollution from the billions of road vehicles, aircraft and ships in the world. Getting rid of just a handful of steam locomotives will make no difference to the world but getting rid of the pollution from road vehicles would probably sort the problem in one move. If you’d like to save our Earth from disaster, please get rid of your car or motor bike, don’t buy anything that has been delivered by air, sea or lorry, switch off your electricity at home, never go on holiday by aircraft or car. Not easy, is it? Andy
