I've built quite a few parts casters over the years, one of the first things i learned is i never direct mount pickups anymore. I wasted alot of time and money on guitar body repairs by doing exactly what you did, and screwed right thru the body. I have no problem dropping a few bucks into a partscaster project and getting a set of pickup rings lol! Glad you could save the guitar though! I love getting cheap, beat up and neglected guitars and bringing them back to life, such a fun hobby!

Just a little tip - if you think the screw might bust through the finished surface, put your finger tips on the back where the screw might break. Often you can feel the grain start to raise as it’s coming to the surface and you can stop and back off.

I'm doing this kind of thing all the time, and I have to say, I'm loving it! It's about as close to luthiery as one can get without being an actual luthier. Feel free to criticise in the replies if you don't agree! I'm not 100% convinced that Dane knows absolutely everything there is to know about how guitars are made. but, I feel intuitively that this channel is 1000% sincere. Thank you Dane! (And to be honest, at least he can play guitar properly. I can’t.😒)

Hey Dane! Thank you so much for the like! You're a star!

I think that the wood you removed from the neck heel accidentally brought the guitar nut and the tuneomatic bridge closer together. That could be why some of the saddles had to be set all the way to the back of the bridge to allow intonation. Removing an eighth of an inch from the neck heel also decreases the scale of the neck by the same measurement.

I just did all the same work on a 90s ibanez rx series fretboard. Also upgraded the tuners to a vintage Fender set. Also installed a new graph tech tusk nut. Fun doing the work when the end result is good. Paid 45 bucks for it with $65 in parts, and it kicks ass. Great channel, thanks, Dane.

For the bass, I found that "KK Ishibashi Gakki Ten" translates to "Ishibashi Musical Instruments Corp", but not finding anything on "Erandan" or "Lerry" from the other graphics. the body shape and headstock look a lot like a Fernandes PJS-50, but the controls are different

I found this video by accident but I like your work! A partscaster is nearly always fun to make and yours looks cool - all the better for using spares and pieces some would ignore. For me, I'd have used a wrap around bridge to avoid drilling to fit the stop bar (because I'm a coward). Whatever, that's a good job there.

Great build! Very educational for myself. I have a 1980's Kramer Voyager that has way too many years unfinished. My parts list is 1 single pickup, 6 inline tuners, 1 kill switch, 1 jack, 4 neck screws, 1 Floyd Rose, and a paint job. I have kind of fell away from the guitar hobby for a bit. Maybe we can finish the Voyager by next year some time.

Projects are always fun. I have a Walmart First Act Strat that my son found in a dumpster. I cleaned it up and put a cheap but great sounding pickup on it and it's a really nice playing and sounding guitar. I would have mounted the pickups in black bezels an put black knobs on though. Looks great though except for putting the screws through the back.

If you flatten a strat-shaped heel to go in a tele, you'll make the scale length a little too short. It's the right length to the end of the rounded heel. Normally the fretboard hangs off a little onto the body, which covers the empty corners. FYI, a Strat neck will go on a Tele, but a Tele neck will not go on a strat unless you modify the heel to be rounded a bit. I love Teles but don't really like the Tele headstock shape so that's fine with me. I'm building a new, super-tele and I'll be putting a scalloped Strat neck on it.

I've done something akin to this--never to the degree you did (i.e., pretty much full-build from spare parts with the exception of the body, which were still all used). But I can identify with the satisfaction of modifying/piecing together a guitar with already owned parts. And I'm not sure if you did this--this is my preference being a stickler for getting the most tones possible with my pickups--but I would('ve) wired the pickups (since you used a 5 way switch) in a (1) bridge hum (2) split single bridge (3) both hums combined or split to coils (4) either split neck coil or--to be fancy--bridge/neck combo split to singles (5) full neck. I'm just that way. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed watching you put together a Partscaster. Well done! Every guitar player: BE INSPIRED!!!

What a fun build! Love how it turned out. Did you end up filing the heel? Was wondering whether that would affect the scale length. Eranan was Ishibashi music store's own custom guitar brand in the 80s - kinda similar to early ESP. They made some pretty whacky shapes based on customer orders back in the day too.

When you were talking about how thin the wood was in the pickup cavities and how low pickups were I kept saying get some wood, cut and sand to fill the excess space, and glue it in. Then you raise the pickups and lessen the chance of popping the drill or screws through the back. But you obviously didn’t hear me. 😁

Easy fix to screws through back thing, if even an issue~ drill all 4 all the way, add correct pickup machined screws similar to Danelectro, from the back. And then you turn it from a gooch, into an intention. Its cool because no one expects the adjust from the back...🎉 And its all Win-Win 🌹

Yeah never throw away anything like that neck, do what you did and build a parts caster, there’s at least one kid in the family who would love to have it!, that bass is very cool, I barely made out “gakki” on the headstock, looks like a very early Japan made Jackson copy, probably the same factory that made Japanese Jackson guitars just a short time later, I’ll bet it’s a great bass.

$25 for a guitar build is great. It’s always fun to build your own guitar and see what it will sound like.
