The Haligtree is the house of Miquella, and Mohgwyn Palace is the place were Miquella currently resides, Miquella was/is working on Unalloyed Gold, a way to protect yourself from the influences of Outer Gods, this may be the reason why the Greater Will doesn't want you going to this places.

Something worth noting is that Both Mohg and Malenia’s Shards of the Elden Ring are notably corrupted by the influence of the Formless Mother/Lord of Rot as seen in their Great Rune descriptions and appearances. Perhaps the Great Will saw that those two sharps were corrupted and not worth putting back in the ring at risk of infecting the entire order.

The flail thing is almost certainly a glitch, as the deathbed dress has a glitch where it can spread damaging effects to the player and their allies. If you use the flail glitch near a friendly player, they get hit too.

My guess is that the dress applies some kind of spell-like effect behind the scenes, and in doing so somehow allows effects to combine with it or follow it. That would explain why it can damage allies that are nearby, but outside of melee range.

Why is NOBODY mentioning the place where Miquellas cocoon was stolen from?! The hole in the roots IS a womb and theres a torso and a face connected to it. You can get the best look at it in both of Malenia's cutscenes.

In addition to the Aeonian Butterfly, there is also a rarer Nascent Butterfly, which according to its item description "appears as if it's just emerged from its cocoon for its entire life." a clear link to Miquella. Edit: On that same topic, Nascent Butterflies are used to create items that boost your immunity, robustness, and focus. This would be irrelevant, but Miquella can stave off the influence of outer gods, or in other words: Scarlet Rot (Nameless), Bleed (Formless), and Madness (Regression)

Something also to note: I saw a post on twitter highlighting that Malenia's armature has a butterfly decoration detailed on it. So perhaps the butterfly link was already known and accepted by the twins. The Nascent Butterfly also seems to represent Miquella; a butterfly that naturally looks like it just emerged from a cocoon its whole life, and associated with sleep. Miquella, being eternally young, who formed a cocoon to metamorphosize into his adult form, and is associated with St.Trina of sleep and dreams, best symbolizes this.

I think a big reason why butterflies are associated with Malenia is because they themselves are beautiful, but associated with rot. Some species of butterfly even rely heavily on carrion as a source for food and break down rotting corpses.

I don't know if we should be certain that the guidance of grace comes from the greater will...Marika herself seemed to be at one time able to freely give and remove Grace, and Im not sure there's enough evidence that the greater will is attempting to directly influence the actions in game, at least at this point. I think it's also worth looking into where Grace DOES point rather than just where it doesn't, since it appears that Grace also guides you to Ranni, Sellia?(Caelid has an interesting grace pattern), Castle Morne, Castle Sol. Interesting start and end points for a lot of these, and I'd like to think it's not just developer oversight

That Salvador Dali painting correlation is a really cool find! It's interesting to note that Dali was a very influential surrealism artist with a lot of emphasis on dream symbolism. It's safe to surmise that that particular painting is representing a transitional period in person's life or perhaps also a societal one in a chrysalis stage before an age of awakening or enlightenment. This would also fit nicely with the butterflies and moths as a metaphor for metamorphosis into a higher beings that Miquella and Melania both undergo to become gods. As a reference on society it also reflects their ideals as transitioning from dreams to being fully realized. Something that is as of yet waiting further progression as Melania awaits her brother and as we the fan base also await possible continuation of their story in DLC. It can be seen as an egg in a womb before birth as well as a cocoon that transforms.

Butterflies mainly feed on nectar and take in other liquids containing minerals. They primarily represent metamorphosis, which Empyreans can undergo to become actual gods. Miquella (birth/rejuvenation and sleep - the brother of death), Malenia (rot) and Melina (destined death) together form the circle of life. All three have their dedicated butterfly.

For that matter the Smoldering Butterfly could be associated with Radagon - in alchemy terms and he being half the Rebus (sol, fire), leading up to the Rebus are the two stages of putrefaction (wet earth warm rot) and purification (wet air cool purifying) could be represented by Malenia and Miquella. Butterflies are transitional creatures so it makes sense that these three butterfly types in ER could be associated with Radagon, Malenia and Miquella. In ER the alchemical process seems to be presenting backwards though, an undoing of each stage by degrees so it makes sense having putrefaction and purification happen *after* the rebus instead of before.

In my interpretation the guidance of grace is thanks to Marika, not the Greater Will. Clearly the Greater Will doesn't want us becoming Elden Lord, but Marika wants the Tarnished to get into the Erdtree, so it makes more sense that she activated the Guidance of Grace, not the Greater Will. That's my interpretation, at least. Although the Mohgwyn/Haligtree thing is interesting to think about.

@@khandimahn9687 Honestly, I'm not reading too much into where the graces guide you, as while there is lore reason for the existence of the guidance, I think there's practical functionality that just guides players to the most important stuff in a region that isn't worth looking too deeply into. I mean the guidance guides you to Castle Morne and while it kicks off the Frenzied Flame stuff, there's no good reason for Marika to send you there. Same with Caria manor. I think the Consecrated Snowfield is the confusing endgame area meant to test your exploration and that's why graces don't guide you anywhere.

On Mohg and Malenia, when Malenia ascends to Godhood she gets Wings, Mohg is the only other character with Wings in second phase, and both come from outter Gods besides the greater will, also leading me to believe Mohg ascended to Godhood too during Nihil Edit: i heard smoughtown say that the formless Mother seems to have amplified Mohgs omen blood thus his appearance aswell, there being a link between omen and the same promidial crucible the Crucible Knights use to spawn appendages Mohg could have just amplified that connection during Nihil to spawn wings

On that last point of Scarlet Rot and Malenia: butterflies symbolize the life cycle and metamorphosis. Malenia dies and is reborn each time she blooms and Miquella is in a kind of cocoon waiting to be reborn. It's interesting that there are no black butterflies or moths, which represent death, making the two of them more symbolic of life and hope than that of death.

about guidance of grace, imo I think the one who offer the guidance is more from Marika than from Greater Will, the reason being: 1. There are guidance that point your way to Ranni, who already cast aside her great rune and clearly oppose the Greater Will 2. There are actually guidance toward Melania in a roundabout way in form of one toward Millicent and one toward Castle Sol, which is required to reach the Haligtree 3. There are guidance toward the Forge. This one is definitely not in the interest of the Greater Will (Something that can burn the Erdtree? no way), but Marika would very much want the Tarnished to reach it. one that I'm not certain about is one toward Castle Mornne, since that one would nudge the Tarnish toward the Frenzied Flame.

I don’t think the greater will is the one controlling the guidance of grace. I think Marika is responsible for that. Otherwise, why would it lead you to the mountaintops of the giants set the erd tree on fire and set you on the path to eventually kill it’s avatar, the elden beast? Malenia and miquellas haligtree was hidden to Gideon who served Marika/the greater will. So Grace couldn't guide us there, Gideon doesn't know where Mohg was hiding either, only that a shardbearer was called Lord of blood.

Always hear people say they hate the subterranean shunning grounds, I'm sure the intended vibe and atmosphere is supposed to be a drag and aesthetically dreary. So for what they were going for I think they nailed this zone, I really like it from a level design perspective. From a fun perspective? Sure yeah it can be a pain in the ass so i do get it. Definitely my favorite "sewer" or "gross underground" level they've ever made personally though.

Definitely strong correlations between the metamorphosis of butterflies and the Empyerean children of Miquella and Malenia. Even other characters like Rykard go through a sort of transformation attempt, and Morgott vomits his curse and becomes Grace given finally just before his death. Of course Godrick trying to transform himself with grafting can't be forgotten. The butterfly is a fitting metaphor for this story. To transform from a meager form to something grand but short lived...how fascinating.

It's not just Malenia that is associated with butterflies. Her butterfly is the aeonian butterfly, Miquella's butterfly seems to be the Nascent butterfly based on the description, and the smouldering butterfly is probably a reference to Melina. Melina's clothes are found near Malenia, you could say shes cursed with being "burned and bodiless", shes almost certainly of Radagon with her red hair and heavily implies Marika is her mother, making all three empyreans. Butterflies also represent death, and all three seem to have ties to some aspect of life and death

Something that has always intrigued me in the game's intro is the relationship of image and text when the tarnished is evoked to rise from death and a catacomb is shown (a mist falls from what look like incense burners, forming a "sea of ​​fog" over the many bodies). The Guidance Of Grace is so interesting because as someone else said, it could be the Greater Will, but it ALSO could be Marika. So Marika not wanting you to find Miquella, who was in both of these places, would align with the theory she wants Outer God influence gone, and doesn't want Miquella harmed because he is the Empyrian most able to remove the influence of Outer Gods.

For the beginning, the death bed dress is known for being buggy with effects. You used to be able to inflict frostbite on allies if you wore it and used the darkmoon greatsword weapon art. I think it works like fire's deadly sin glitch but purely for allies

I feel like the butterflies being closely tied to Scarlet Rot is because the Rot, if looked at in a positive light, is the essence of the cycle of death and rebirth - that is to say, decay. Butterflies are often associated with metamorphosis, and life cycles - either their own or being part of the food chain. All of which results in the butterfly returning to the earth in order to become a deathbed for new life to flourish. I think from a lore perspective the butterflies are avatars of the scarlet rot like the Erdtree is for the Greater Will. But beyond that it's more symbolic to me

Regarding the Scarlet Rot and the butterlies. It is often kind of stated in the game that the rot is on one side a horrible mystified decease but at the same time has some sorta beauty to it, npc's even calling its appearance euphemistically and literally a blossoming flower. It plays a lot with contrasts you see. In the swamp are growing fungi, and mold but also blossom buds, The Scarlet Rot is a deadly ravaging illness, but yet it is called Aeonia (or so) too, which comes from the Greek word "αίώνιος" and means "eternal", And of course the "Cleanrot" Knights which is an obvious oxymoron. This applies to the Lotus flower which is a symbol of purity, since it grows in muddy water and has highly hydrophobic leaves, therefor staying clean even in dirty water, and Mallenia like to turn into one. Same goes for Butterfly wings. Not only do their scales repel water as well, they are obviously beautiful, but at least in modern media they are often shown to be poisonous as well (e.g. Pokemon). Maybe all that's a point. That or Scarlet Rot just means ephemeral beauty... Since Butterflies don't live long and their wings often shred quickly...

I found out the flail and deathbed dress thing out by accident during my first play through. Another thing I found out with it, is that regardless of if you crouch or silent your step with a talisman, enemies will still immediately notice you. Even more so than if you weren't wearing the dress. It's like the thing was designed to bring all manner of bad luck to the player. I have a gut feeling these aren't bugs but lore related, but not sure how.

i know there was a fun glitch w/ seppuku. if you wore the deathbed dress or used the holy ground ash of war, then seppuku, it would cause tiny single digit damage ticks. i think the flail self damage is similar in a way, but i'm no genius so i don't know exactly.

whilst watching the bit about placidusax and dragon damage, i realised that placidusax is presented in the same manor as the new born dragon in DS1. therefore he is more of a true dragon (and probably the reason he is an elden lord) then any other dragon found in game. stone scales, wings folded around, surrounded by columns? just thought i would throw that out there

On the lore implications of the guidance of grace, I believe that the guidance isn't directly controlled by the greater will but rather it automatically points tarnished towards demigods untainted or unobscured by outer gods. The evidence of this is the site of grace that appears at the top of Ranni's tower which points you toward the portal to Ainsel River, ultimately resulting in the destruction of her two fingers which goes against the greater will.

Has anyone else noticed the woman in the haligtree at 9:25? I haven't seen anyone discuss this yet. It seems like she is holding a a spherical vacancy, probably where Miquella's cocoon was meant to stay. It's in almost the perfect position to resemble the woman being pregnant. Maybe the pelvis bone fits the tree too?

@@beastren He wasn't gender ambiguous. People didn't know if Trina was a boy or a woman, because sometimes they saw Miquella and sometimes they saw Malenia, as they traveled together. I'd just reckon the woman in the tree is probably the god of life and abundance, who chose Miquella, rather than the god of rot that chose Malenia. There's so many sets of twins in this game, the gods that chose twins are probably also twins.

For the Aeonian Butterflies, according to the description:"A butterfly with withered, scarlet wings found in the swamp of Aeonia. Material used for crafting items. According to myth, these butterflies were once the wings of the Goddess of Rot herself." It seems they only exist when Malenia transforms into the Goddess of Rot. I believe she temporarily apotheosizes into the Goddess of Rot state in first and second blooms.With the third bloom, she will become a "true goddess" meaning that the state will become permanent and this part,unlike the other remembrances which the descriptions are in past tense, hers is in present tense. Maybe this is the reason why we did not see Goddess Slain message appearing when we defeat Malenia. What are your thoughts on this?

I think the reason scarlet rot is so associated with butterflies is simple.Malenia is the one associated with butterflies just like Miquella,so the rot takes the form or try to create life based on its vessel,kinda like how Elden Beast is said to be the order while Golden Order is Marika's version of it.

Vaati linked the butterflies to the demi gods. The aeonian butterflies being linked to Malenia and scarlet rot, the Nascent Butterflies linked to Miquella and the Smoldering Butterflies most likely linked to Destined Death which is either Malina or someone we havent seen before. Either way I think it's a strong argument from Vaati we can see as true, especially with the presentation we get from Malenia and of course the areas we find the Butterflies in.

Miquellas egg, before being kidnapped, occupied a position that corresponds to the belly of the female figure that is formed from the roots of the tree (as if it was in gestation). After being transferred to Mohg Palace, the analogy of the egg in gestation is still present, with the egg now resting on the bones of the pelvis. If we knew who that figure in Malenia's arena represents and where those bones in Mohg's arena came from , the symbology cpould be expanded even further.

Just an idea with scarlet rot flowers and butterflys. I think the rot its self might be symbolism for nectar/pollen, and even though butterfly aren't nearly as efficient as bee's when it come to pollinating, they can still do it because the butterflys want to drink the nectar. So if the scarlet rot is the pollen and Malenia being a host for the rot making it so when she blooms, she herself could be the nectar. Meaning her wings made from butterflys might be taking advantage of her, and or eating her possibly. Or they could have symbiotic relationship like how bee's pollinate. And thise could go even further for symbolism because Miquella is in a literal cocoon. Thus making a connection between the siblings. Plus both siblings have there own butterflys and flowers that represent themselves. Now this is completely hypothetical and the butterfly thing could be something to do about beauty, idk.

I think we have a triple goddess in the form of Ranni, Melina, and the Gloam Eyed Queen. Yes Melina states her mother is Marika not Rennala *BUT* Melina could be half of Ranni; what she threw away during the death ritual. What was leftover went back into the Erdtree (rebirth) and was given a new purpose by Marika. Not to mention Radagon and Marika are the same person. In Irish myth it's actually not unheard of for someone to have three parents. Look at Setanta (CuChullain) who has two fathers and a mother. He had his normal set of human parents but also his father was Lugh. And he died at least three times before he was actually born.

If you use sepuku with the deathbed dress, you will keep getting stunned and taking small amounts of damage until the buff runs out, this will also kick you out of sites of grace and hits allies as well.

My theory about the missing guidance of grace in the Haligtree and Mohgwyn Palace was that there was no grace simply because other tarnished (or specifically The All Knowing Tarnished, Gideon) had never explored/discovered these areas in the lore. I noticed how both Miquella’s Haligtree and Mohg’s Palace are both the only two places Gideon Ofnir straight up doesn’t know about. He asks us to go in and discover their secrets FOR HIM because he’s so stumped. When we tell him of these places, he is surprised by what we found and he rewards us handsomely for the information. This leads me to believe that somehow Gideon is able to control the sites of grace, which also explains why they can be confusing or obfuscatory at times (since Gideon’s a little shit). It could also be that Gideon reports directly to Marika, and she controls the guidance of grace.
