Pilot here. The vape will 100% set the smoke alarm off. I’ve had it activated many times by passengers who hot box the cubical thinking it won’t.

My last flight on JAL one of the flight attendants made an announcement that someone vaped in the head and let us all know that was unacceptable.

Not only is it unacceptable, it is also illegal if you're flying in and out of Japan. Under the Japanese Aviation Act, if you smoke or vape despite the warning of the captain, you can be fined by up to ¥500,000, which is about $3,500 USD. I expect Japanese airlines would enforce this more rigorously than foreign airlines that fly in and out of Japan.

Those “smoke” alarms are sensitive to certain particles. Even some sprays could set off those alarms.

I am quite sure some hair sprays and deodorants will set it off too. They are super sensitive (thankfully).

I think this is pretty smart from ZipAir, the seat is the most important part of the experience for the majority of people on long haul flights

It's seriously impressive that a flight reviewer read a McKinsey report and a JAL financial statement. That level of dedication and sophistication is quite extra! I would add though that flights could be further separated into short, medium and long haul. LCCs tend to do well in medium haul, even if for long haul their advantages erode. For example, Scoot does very well flying 7 hours from Singapore to Sydney and Melbourne while keeping prices low. In 2024 I flew Scoot from Bangkok to Melbourne via Singapore, then from Sydney to Taipei via Singapore, all for AUD1200 total for premium class the whole way. It was phenomenal value and all flight legs were almost entirely full.

Omgggggg, I was just looking at Zipair from Houston to Tokyo too. It just seems so unbelievably cheap, but somehow worth it.

flew from Tokyo to Vancouver last year with Zipair and honestly it so worth it for long haul flights. Sure, you don't get the usual business class experience, which mostly anyway is just (hopefully) really good food on top of the full lie flat seat - and tbh on my flight the Zipair crew was so amazing and attentive, actually more caring than most other actual business class flights (oh i love the japanese

ZIPAIR is cheap until you need to change something, which requires you to forfeit your entire trip cost and re-buy everything with no credit towards the new trip. Read the fine print before booking.

Great to see a review on Zipair that says it how it is. Fully agree the seat is the main thing I like about Business, so I'd be very happy to fly Zipair, they just need to start flying to Sydney!

I think that the zip air offering is quite a good option… You’re paying for the seat and nothing else. With the boxes of noodles I suspect that to ensure that those who are traveling, maybe don’t feel homesick or the ability to have a meal as soon as they land, and when they find their bearings in their destination

Cabin crew here. Vaping will definitely set off that alarm. We constantly have to deal with passengers attempting to take a quick puff.

Its interesting that JAL decided to setup this separate long-haul LCC, despite being the majority shareholder in Jetstar Japan. Kind of like Scoot and Tiger Singapore, which SQ eveentually combined.

As ex crew, vaping presents a huge risk when flying. The batteries in them can become unstable and they are a huge fire risk- they also do set off the smoke detectors, not a fun experience for the crew
