New subscriber!😊 This was a great video in showing what it's like doing an ocean crossing. Thank you so much for sharing! That's got to be just terrible dealing with being sick while trying to cross with all the responsibilities that go with steering the boat. Horrible feeling like that. I'm new to sailing but I've always wanted a sailboat ever since I was a kid and used sunfish sailboats on a lake when I was in the Boy Scouts. I'm 53 now and a professional chef so been very busy all my life. Never had much time for myself. I've owned my catering business for 30 years now, semi retired and I'm seriously considering purchasing a used sailboat. I've been reading about sailing and being an old Boy Scout would never go out on my own without being properly trained. I'm good with my hands fixing things. Like to work on old cars and motorcycles in my spare time. I think I would really enjoy doing what you're doing. I'm married also so would be together with my wife. I'm planning on taking some online courses to get certification along with learning the ropes (pun intended) on another person's boat first. My biggest question is how do I go about finding a 40'+ used, bluewater sailboat that doesn't need too much work done to her without really knowing what I'm looking at because I'm a novice? I don't want to be sold a lemon and I'm not a rich guy so this boat must be under 150k. I've been looking on and off for a year or so now on Craigslist, FB and of course all the known boat selling sites online. There are so many brands and styles. I love the old, beautiful woods and cabins of the older boats from the 70's and even the 80's but how does one know if it's not going to fall apart once I get her in the water? Just joking but you know what I mean. I don't mind owning an older boat as long as she's seaworthy. Is it best to stay away from older boats? I realize there is a lot to this but just wondering if you could steer me in the right direction. In your opinion is it better to have a 50'+ boat for ocean crossings vs a 40'+ boat? I noticed your boat is a Ketch with 2 masts. Is there a big difference sailing this style vs say, a sloop? What are the good and bad things having this style boat? Would that be a good boat for a beginner like me or doesn't it matter? May I ask what year and make your boat is and how long you've owned her? Do you think at my age of 53, I'm too old to get into this hobby? I'm asking because I feel at my age I don't have the opportunity to start with a small boat and keep graduating upwards to bigger boats like a younger person would naturally do over time. So my dilemma is that as a novice I want to buy what would normally be my last boat or the biggest one I can afford with my budget and take good care of her until I'm finished sailing or until I expire lol. Since I'm already starting out at an older age I won't have the time to wait. Does that make sense? I look forward to hearing back from you with any advice you would be willing to help me with as a novice but with a dream and drive to do what you're doing eventually. I would love to sail around the world slowly over a few years time and make some wonderful memories with my wife. I just want to make were safe amd have a good boat to take us there. Thank you again for your videos and look forward to seeing more! Take care and God bless!

Hi Philip, welcome ☺️ It’s not up to us to tell you what you should do in your life, but I’m sure you will figure it out yourself 😁 There are many blue water boats between 40 and 50 feet you can get for under $100K. Just understand that after you get the boat you may have to spend and additional $50K to get it ready to cruz. I think a ketch is much better for two people to sail. Smaller sails! You are never too old to do anything. I didn't start sailing until I was 52 or so.
@philipmayo48652 жыл бұрын
@@SailingAquarius Thank you for your thoughts and makes me feel a little better knowing you started sailing later in life also. I didn't realize a ketch has smaller sails. That's interesting. Does that mean the boat doesn't heel over as much or am I thinking wrong? How would I know if a used boat I found was a good buy since I'm a novice and I don't have any friends that know about sailing? I'm good with old Chevys and motorcycles but right now I'm kinda lost what to even check or how to know if one I'm looking at is a good buy or not? I've heard you can pay to have a boat surveyed? not sure if that's correct but I can't afford to have 5 different boats checked our professionally. I wouldn't want to wait too long to make a decision if it's a good buy and I also don't want to jump the gun and spend my savings on what turns out later to be a lemon. How did you learn to sail? Did you buy your boat new or used and if used, how did you know it was a good deal? Would you have any thoughts or wisdom you would add to help a newbie in this hobby? Thank you so much for your time and your advice as an expert sailor to someone who's heart is out there with the sea.

But tbh I probably need the ketch as the wife would find it easier should i not be fit,

Could your sickness have been a result of ciguatoxin poisoning? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) places barracuda at the top of its list of predatory fish consumers ought to avoid. This is because large, predatory fish that live near reefs, like barracudas, have a greater chance of passing along ciguatera fish poisoning. As its name implies, the poisoning is caused by a substance called ciguatoxin. Though ciguatera fish poisoning can stir up a highly uncomfortable spectrum of symptoms, it's rarely fatal. The ciguatoxin doesn't harm the barracuda, but almost everyone who eats infected barracuda will reap unpleasant consequences. Within 24 hours, the poisoning provokes extreme nausea and vomiting that often lasts for a couple of days. A tingling in nerve endings, or parethesia, may persist longer. Other symptoms include headache and a metallic taste and feeling of loose teeth in the mouth. In atypical cases, ciguatera fish poisoning can produce permanent nerve and cardiovascular damage.
