Great information. I wouldn't think of traveling without a water maker. In my case it's a motor yacht so there is plenty of power and space. I'm installing a Dometic Spot Zero Reverse Osmosis System. It is a water maker and purifier combined so you can even was the boat with the water and not leave any spots. The one I'm installing has plenty of capacity, around 85 gals. (320 liters) per hour. I may have to sell some of the water to other boaters to help pay for my boat. LOL Thanks again for the great explanation.

Great and easy to understand! I would suggest running the product water stored in the on-board tank through a U.V. light and PH filter before filling up water bottles or for any water used for making ice. The water will taste much better and be free of any bacteria.
@SailingAquarius
@SailingAquarius 5 жыл бұрын
We boil the water out of the tank before we drink it. But, the bottled water directly out of the water maker, should not have bacteria because the bacteria should not be able to get through the holes in the membranes. The holes are too small. At least that is what I have heard. If you know differently, please let me know. Thanks Ken

Really good explanation Ken. (Nice work on the animations too). After looking at the (albeit well done) installation on Flying Fish and how much storage space it consumed, I appreciate the Super Maramu even more!

Hi Ken. That must have taken a ton of time making the graphics. Great work! Oyster Yachts used, and still uses, a brand called SeaFresh. When we bought Talisman the owner of West Coast Marine Services in Troon, Scotland told me that he'd spent hundreds of hours (probably an exaggeration) working on our watermaker and it had probably never produced more than 200 liters of water in it's life. By fall of next year we'll be in Gibraltar for the third stage of our ongoing refit process. At that point, prior to doing our transatlantic crossing, a new watermaker is on the list. Since we already have one, albeit not functioning, we have all the seacocks, electric and piping. The question is this; would you buy your present watermaker again, or go with a different brand?
@SailingAquarius
@SailingAquarius 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think I would buy the current brand that was installed on Aquarius. The current Dessalator 60 that runs off 24 volts. The reason is, the cost. There are cheaper water makers, and it would depend on where I was, what brand I bought. Open Ocean has a good system, and RO also has a good system. Check the prices where you are, and see what is available. I would get a DC system making 100Lt per hour. Best, Ken

Love your channel. If money was not a factor would you prefer a cat over a mono hull ? Looking towards my retirement in a couple of years, planning med in the summer and Caribbean in the winter?
@SailingAquarius

I don't really know, because I have not sailed on a Cat. But, if I had $3M or so, I would like to try a GunBoat. It is a Fast Cat and a bit of a game changer because of the speed. You can out run weather, and make crossings quickly. Zivile would say Yes, she would like to go on a cat. Ken

When water maker failed did it shut off automatically or did it contaminate your entire fresh water supply?

The later. We were making water and putting it into bottles for drinking. Luckily we didn't put much in the tank, that would have been a big problem. Fair Winds.

Great video! Do you have any opinion on making water using AC (so inverter or generator) with higher production rates vs using DC (off battery and solar) but with lower production rates? So making a lot quickly (but with noise) or making less but more quietly?
@SailingAquarius
@SailingAquarius 5 жыл бұрын
As battery technology progresses, like today with the LiFePO4 (and what ever is next tomorrow), and the progress solar technology, why would anyone use AC on a boat. Every conversion costs 10 to 30% of additional power. With solar, you produce energy in DC, the batteries are DC, so get a water maker using DC. On a 24V system the water maker will use between 10Amps, and 30Amps depending on how much water it makes. Knowing what I know now, I would get a system with 2 membranes because it's like having a spare. If one of the membranes goes bad, just reroute the bad water out of the boat. I would get a system the produces about 100Lt per hour, and I would run it 6 hours every 5 to 7 days. In warmer temperatures run it every 5 days, and cooler temps run it every 7 days. And then I would rinse with 100Lt of water, to make sure I rinsed it well. Then trade out the 5u filter, clean it, and put the in the sun to kill the bugs. And each year I would pickle the system. That's my opinion. If you find out I am wrong, or you have a different opinion, please let me know! Fair winds!

Had a watermaker making so pure water it was difficult to start boiling - there was no nucleus in it - had to put a couple of salt grains in it to make it boil....
@SailingAquarius
@SailingAquarius 5 жыл бұрын
The salinity of the water out of a water maker is greatly reduced, but the water still has salt in it. The boiling temperature of H2O (pure water) is 100 degrees C, with a pinch of salt the Boiling temperature would be slightly higher. (but you would not notice the increase in boiling temperature because the change would be small)

You are correct, the US is the cheapest place to buy membranes. I just bought two membranes from RO. They are in San Diego area, and seemed to be fair priced. I brought them from the US for a boat on the hard next to us in Whangarei. Best, Ken

Carbon block filters can develop bacteria. If filter is not used long time need to be replaced. Ask what is safe life time to use this filters

@@SailingAquarius I don know for this filters . I'm working on Industrial water treatment systems that meet a variety of purification, we replace carbon filters with chemical application to remove chlorine. Reverse Osmosis water systems contain virtually no trace minerals that our body requires for good health.Drinking pure water is safe until you don't have it often, it shouldn't be your main source ... (beer.rum....) Reverse Osmosis Plastic Storage Tank is safe for water storage. So If you have metal water storage tank need to be find out is this safe to use with Reverse Osmosis water systems. There are some things you learn best in calm, and some in storm.
