Our first time on the zip line tour! Despite the 'crash and burn' we had a great time! We'll be back!

This is Gunstock Mountain in Gilford, New Hampshire! This particular Zipline is the Recoil Zipline, which is about 3,900 feet long and reaches speeds up to 65mph. I am currently an active Zipline guide there and the guide at the beginning of the video is a friend of mine. That brake handle is designed to only move your trolley when you pull it down. The reason this person "crashed" is because they didn't let up on the handle when they were supposed to (because they were facing backwards). The "crash" was actually just them hitting a long line of springs designed to slow them down in any case of emergency or somebody forgetting to brake. I have done this line more times than I can count and highly recommend it if you have the chance!

To be fair, _"zipline crash"_ sold more tickets than _"zipline hitting a long line of springs designed to slow them down"_ would've.

That's interesting. Presumably the brake is gripping onto the cable for friction so does that wear the cable out quicker?

@@nevric7374 Slow down the video and look at it frame by frame. Do you see how high the rider is compared to the person on the platform? Also the rider is kind of sitting. There's no way they would risk people hitting the ledge of the platform. Do you see the springs at 01:11 on the other zipline? That is the brake system. The spring compresses and slows you down. Looks like the camera is mounted on the helmet and it hit that plate in front of the spring. It might be hard to to change which way you are facing, depending on the harness. I've only ridden a 300m long zipline FYI.

I did this in Costa Rica in the jungle during a thunderstorm pouring rain. You get moving and I could see how you can get seriously hurt if you don’t have a brake line to slow you down. Also I see he spun around which is tricky to get yourself back facing forward. Took me a few lines to understand how to turn myself around.

I did it in many places but while I was in Costa Rica, I did it in Dominical. That zipline went through a lot of rainforest and at the end it came to a stop where you unclipped yourself about 20 feet above a swimming hole. And dropped into the water.
@rustbucket93182 жыл бұрын
Didn’t look too bad. In Jamaica the workers threw a brake up the line from the bottom that arrested the speed of the rider. Worked very well but was pretty abrupt. That’s probably what happened here and the camera wasn’t firmly attached.
@jedimindknight2 жыл бұрын
Nah, that handle he is pulling on is how he controls his speed. All he needed to do was let up on the handle and a brake pad would be pushed against the line. At the bottoms are springs on the cable, starting at 5lbs resistance and working up to 80lbs. Shouldn't have even hit them at all, that trolley is perfectly capable of stopping you in advance, springs are there as a backup.
