Zippo Butane Insert Fix

I got double flame one for my grandma's old Zippo. It never worked well and I was kinda disappointed. So I did open it up, moved knob about 45 degrees and put everything back (brass limiter included). Now it works like a charm. Kinda sad to see that company like Zippo allows this bad quality in their products. But luckily I found this video and got everything to work as they should do.

Yep the brass governor ring was the reason why my double flame was not working. Videos like this are the reason why KZbin was awesome.

Thanks for this video bruh. This lighter was good with me for about 3 weeks before it just gave up. It would light and flicker for about 2 seconds then die, even when full of butane. Was so disappointed with zippo then I seen this video. Appreciate it!

After 2 years of pain using my single flame insert it now works perfectly thanks to you! I switched to butane because I don't smoke and only use it for stuff like shrink tubing, lighting candles and such. But until now it never worked when I needed it. Almost switched back to lighter fluid, glad I can avoid fiddling with that every other day! Hugh thanks!!

Try "Fasfill" butane. It's x5 times refined, relatively cheap for a 300ml bottle, arcs first time 9/10 times & is just absolutely great. You can turn the flame lower than with Zippo butane, which means saving more fuel.

I also use neon 11x refined butane from Amazon its the cheapest 10x i could find on Amazon hope this helped

WOW!! just did both of mine and they crank couldn't figure out why my single wouldn't light every time. The double didn't have an issue but the single did. Now this thing fire's off great video.

Mine don’t fire at all, thought I needed butane (didnt work at all) now I’m gonna try this once I find my glasses repair kit. I got 2 AC/DC edition ones I wanna use I find these are better and probably safer then disposable lighters, I have 2 disposable ones but I just don’t feel safe with them. A because I can’t get them to light B for some reason I feel like that’s the reason we lost our house in South Carolina.

I had given up on it. I've had it unused in a drawer for like 2 years because it wouldn't work properly. I just found it again to tried to get it to work. I got better butane, bled it properly, tried to mess with the spark, nothing worked and I had given up on it. Until I found this video on my last search. Thank you for posting this video. Based on your video this is how I fixed my butane insert. I bleed out the butane and added new butane. I then removed the metal plate and the O ring. I moved the flame adjustment knob back and forth and then set it past +. I was satisfied with the size of the flame and put it back together. I was glad that I did not have to remove to brass limiter. It is now 99% reliable.

Thank you!! Instructions say to try it at the negative setting and it was never lighting. I didn’t do the fix, I just put the setting all the way to the positive setting and it worked!!

I was super excited about my butane zippo at first when I bought it and then totally hated it since the first time I've had to refill it as it wouldn't work despite trying many things (like bleeding the air, etc.) I just did this and it totally worked. Now I have my zippo back...it's been sitting on the shelf for like 2 years

The link to your video should be a part of the Zippo instruction manual. I just bought the single flame. Initially the flame was good in the middle position then aftet just a few clicks I needed to take out the brass limiter. Now I can adjust it and it works every time. I think Zippo need to be aware of this fault in their product.

thank you for the video. a 1 minute fix solved 6 months of frustration. i thought it was bad butane brands. i tried several. it was pretty bad when at the shop that the cheap lighters worked perfectly but the Zippo was crap. even the shop owner said the zippo jet inserts sucked and he was only stocking them for the people who will only buy zippo lighters. apparently he doesnt know how to fix them so they work. i rarely smoke, but do use the lighter for paracord and heatshrink and it was always frustrating trying to find another lighter every time i needed one because the one in my pocket didnt work.

Agree with the others. I liked my normal zippo but wanted one I could trust to light if I hadn't used it in a month. So I got the butane insert, thinking it would just always light. Certainly it had to bet better than a Bic for this price. But after only a few uses it behaved exactly as you stated. Certainly nothing I could rely on for my camping gear. Leaving me with two lighters I like but really can't use. With your fix I'm once again hopeful that I can use this in my camping gear. Now if it doesn't work, without that limiter I can turn up the flow and have a working lighter again! Thanks this makes me feel a lot less stupid for buying a couple nice Zippo's after visiting their Museum in Bradford PA.

Came across this video, thanks! I was able to get mine working! One thing that seemed to help me also that I haven’t seen mentioned, was bending the piece of metal that the arc jumps to so that the arc is a bit longer. That seemed to increase the odds of lighting on the first button press for me!

Just got my insert today and was immediately bummed that after 2 ignites it stopped. Searched here on KZbin found your video, just got done following steps and BOOM ignites every time... thanks a bunch and also should note mine is the dual flame version.

Thanks so much for the information, it helped immensely. After following your instructions, I was able to get 432 lights out of it and it lasted 2 weeks for me. I did have to adjust the flame every so often at 122 lights, then at 280 lights and then at 375 before it finally gave out at 432. It's so nice to have this last for 2 weeks before refilling (according to my usage). Oh, like you, I used Colibri Premium Butane also. Thanks again! :)

I was close to giving up and buying a replacement when I decided to do a search and found this video. Took the bottom off, removed the metal ring then turned the screw as in the video. Thanks a lot brother! I'm a few months shy of my warranty expiring, but doing this mod is much easier. I'm guessing that Zippo would have just sent me a new one, but then I would have the same problem down the line. My only lasted for about 7-8 months before it started acting up. Hat's off to you!

It would make puff and that's it set way to low.
