What I truly love about Zippo is how durable they’re in every possible situation. High temperature, low temperature, high humidity, rain, snow, wind, a god damn tornado, doesn’t matter, it always lights up if you take care of it. The worst part is that you need to take serious care of it. You always need to have a certain amount of fuel in it, to keep the wick moist, unless the wick gets burned pretty easily. Also there’re some gold plated Zippos but almost none solid Golds or Palladiums. So they’ll eventually rust. They sell solid Silver ones, which probably will rust faster than the Chrome plated ones. Even though chrome is extremely rust resistant, it’s just a playing layer. The non-plated brass ones are probably worse on that front. But at least their inserts are made of stainless steel, which is still not a Gold or Palladium, but lasts much much longer. So unless you preserve your Zippo with great care, someday in the future they’ll just rust away. People revive Zippos of course, which is cool, but I don’t know, I wish the original ones could last as long as a DuPont. Although they’re not practical at all. And they mostly won’t last more than two centuries, the incredible reliability is just amazing. No butane lighter, even a DuPont can’t even compare to its reliability. And a lifetime of durability is literally guaranteed by Zippo. Even your grandchildren can send the lighter to the Zippo to get it working again. Which is an amazing feat for any company to achieve. They have my immense respect just for this policy. And that’s why I won’t ever buy a DuPont. I’d rather buy 20 Zippos or a gold plated, solid silver Zippo, or 3, I don’t know, but I would spend that money on a Zippo. Also preserving a Zippo shouldn’t be that hard if it’s gold plated I believe. You just shouldn’t use it, to not to wear off the gold plating.

The insert doesn’t have zippo written anywhere nor is it stamped with the month it was made and year. Also the chimney is a different design and cam and rivet holding the flint wheel in place is different. I can accurately describe you’re using a zippo from the early to mid 50s so it’s real. That’s how it was stamped then. Block lettering, MADE IN ZIPPO U.S.A and the patent number at the bottom 2517191 PAT PEND. It’s authentic brother.

They didn’t start using date codes until the mid 50s it was a experimental stamp I presume. I own a bunch of vintage ones I fix them up and clean them down and display them. Know when they were made and how to accurately date them, I’m a bit of an expert on this sorta deal. Your zippo is from the 50s. I have one just like it. A 55. For the middle to late 50s you had “dots” to show the date it was made all the way to the 1960s and stopping in 1963. 1964 you had “lines”, 1970s you had “slash marks”, all the way up to the late 80s and the to the 1990s you had “Roman numerals” like X XI, VIII etc etc… starting with the 2000s a Letter from the alphabet indicates the month it was made on the left side of the bottom and zippo in the middle as usual, with a number like 01, 02, 03 and so on. These are the modern ones seen today. Hope all this information helps you out buddy. Keep on collecting.
