I have it paired with a Matten filter in my QT tank and works amazing

tip for the suction cups when you want to remove them- take the appliance off of them and slide the cups over to the corner of the tank where the silicone is and that will break the seal.

The intake sponge has more surface area than the media inside the can. Ceramic rings with air bubbling over them is a much better solution.

I bought one of these after being skeptical because I wanted to test it out for myself. It's been the sole filter in my Walstad tank and it appears that it works. However, I'm not sure if the prefilter isn't just doing all the biological filter work. I guess the ultimate test would be to run it without the prefilter.

Hi, I'm in Tasmania Australia and I've been using this filter in my fancy goldfish tank for the last week in combination with my other Canister filters and sponge filter and I've found that I've had less particles in my water since using it.

I think paired with a sponge filter for air filtration it is still an excellent filter. It can handle a larger bio load while not taking up space. Great for a grow out tank but unsightly for a display tank. I plan on incorporating more of these filters into my new fish room build.

Just picked one up from my LFS after watching this video. It's been running for about an hour now. There is little to no movement in the media. It just clumps and float at the top. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have it on a strong air pump with the adjustment valve removed.

andakin Give it some time and it will start to move, I run 10 of these filters now and some moved right away others took a day to get moving. As it gets moving you can add that air valve in to fine tune the movement and flow from the filter

Does the flowing media get noisy? Also, can this be used without the pre-filter or will the media clog?

In my opinion the media moving is not noisy, if you get real close to the filter you may hear it bouncing off the plastic body but nothing noticeable. And with the included air valve you are able to adjust the flow to reduce noise of the surface agitation. And you could run this without the prefilter but no real reason not to. With it being built into the body of the filter it does not take up any additional room. You can even change out the sponge with a coarser sponge that will not clog up as fast. I am doing more extensive testing to really see how well the prefilter does and will have a video of that coming out soon.

amaraKris No I do not think it will work properly as the media will not fluidize properly. They are producing a smaller version that should accommodate shorter tanks.

I did not document that particular one, but I do have another double rack build in the works that I can document that one and make a video of it. If it helps though I followed the King of Diy instructions of how to build a stand and modified it to meet my needs. Prime Time Aquatics also has a really good video on building a double rack aquarium stand.

Just curious if you can create a power head out of the filter...if the output created decent flow in the entire tank it would be all the more powerful. (perhaps I'm uninformed and it already has that function, but im just curious. PS I live 4 miles from A.C. so im tempted to go buy some for my fish room)

The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium If you push a lot of air through it you will get some decent surface agitation. The output is similar to a sponge filter not like a Powerhead actually pushing water across the tank.

Bug Gus I have a large Jebao Air Pump running a central system I am working on testing out single station air pumps to see if they are sufficient. With the included valve though if there is concern of a pump being to large you can dial it back

I packed mine with biomotion .. much better.. Cycles in 3 days and you can fit far more media in. There’s enough biomotion there to handle 20 gallons. It’s stores about 600 ml... 2 of them is more then the equivalent biological media in a fluval 206 I hope they make one which is twice as wide

What would you think to this taking solids out of the open water compared to a canister filter?..I use all canister's but like the look of these, I just can't see them being half as effective that's all, it does look a great design though!

Makoy Unggoy I think every filter has its advantages over another. In my experience the intake sponge does a decent job of taking small solids out of the water, similar to a sponge filter. I run a few canisters and they are work horses but I hate servicing them, this filter is extremely easy to service

I ordered on but the media is not tumbling it is just floating on top. Is that normal at first?

Yes that is normal, it should start to tumble within the first few hours of air running through it. From there you may need to fine tune your air flow to get consistent movement of the media.

I do think it could be used but really no need to as this filter already comes with a media base. But yes you are able to remove the top portion and would be able to switch out the media. And welcome to the channel! Thank you for the support!

@@CaptainNemo49 I do not have exact prints. I used the method from The King of Diy on how to build a stand and then used the method he used to stack aquariums. Pretty simple to build. I just had to build it a little longer to fit in the two 40 breeders on the bottom. I also left a lot of working room above the two 40's on purpose as I wanted to be able to access my drain pipe that is behind the stand. If you would like I can get full dimensions on the stand and send them to you.
