‘Faoiseamh a Gheobhadsa’
Máirtín Ó Direáin
Faoiseamh a gheobhadsa
Seal beag gairid
I measc mo dhaoine
Ar oileán mara,
Ag siúl cois cladaigh
Maidin is tráthnóna
Ó Luan go Satharn
Thiar ag baile.
Faoiseamh a gheobhadsa
Seal beag gairid
I measc mo dhaoine
Ó chrá chroí,
Ó bhuairt aigne,
Ó uaigneas dhuairc,
Ó chaint ghontach
Thiar ag baile.
'I Will Find Solace'
I will find Solace
A short while
Amongst my people
On a sea island
Walking the stone beach
Morning and evening
From Monday to Saturday
In the west at home
I will find solace
A short while
Amongst my people
From heart sorrow
From mind worry
From joyless lonliness
From hurtful talk
In the west at home

When you do not know what will happen to you, when you fear for the future, listen, little and defenseless man, to this one. And when you see the vastness of the sea, the white surf, the high peaks of the rocks, remember: you are not alone. This reflection flows with her singing, with his playing, you can see, and so much is still ahead of you ...

I’m a musician, vocalist/guitarist, and wanted to learn this song, so I write out the phonetics as well as I could, watching Zoe’s mouth when possible for difficult consonants. Here’s what I’ve got, which allows me to practice pretty darn close. If you know gaelic and notice any glaring errors, please let me know! Faoiseamh a Gheobhadsa We shevayotsa, shalbah algeledge Anmask maalini, errin lanmarraa Egshuga shkladi, madjiin estra-noannaa Oh nuu en kasahrehhn Ee ee ehrkbalugehhhh We shevayotsa, shalbah algeledge Anmask maalini, au krawl-kree Oh-ooh ahr-chagniaar, oh-ooh egnya skuaarg Oh-haiain shantaak Ee ee ehrk-balugeeehh (Fiddle) We shevayotsa, shalbah algeledge Anmask maalini, errin lanmarraa Egshuga shkladi, madjiin estra-noannaa Oh nuu en kasahrehhn Ee ee ehrkbalugehhhh x3 (Fiddle, out)

Nice work! I have attempted a rough transliteration, taking Zoë Conway's pronunciation into account, followed by a fairly literal translation that I have tried to make rhyme and scan. I'm blown away by how good a sound you can record in a little boat on the water, with wind and all surrounding noises... Apart from that, there is another version of this song with Mrs. Conway singing and John Mc Intyre, on their CD, where Julie Fowlis is joining the singing (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWOTiK2Xn82haqc). The violin on the album is so gripping that I get goosebumps every time I listen to the set-in of the violin at the end of the song. This version has at least two violin tracks superimposed, but is not as gripping. And performed a tad faster, I think.
