The basement scene, the last scene, the opening and the stare down between Lee and Robert were some of the best scenes of the past 10 years

+Brannon H Don't you mean Leigh and Robert? I just watched it for the first time today. It was kind of bleak and lacked drama. Most of the characters, including the protagonist is really poorly developed and one-dimensional. It just felt empty and pointless to me. That said, it's a fantastic recreation of historic visuals but that's all I really took from it.

+Linkenski Very much disagree. Character development took place heavily in their environment, the people around them and performances. The best part is that all the development is done subtly. So maybe you should watch it again but pay more attention this time round

The scene where Jake Gyllenhaal goes into the basement is one of the most disturbing experiences I've had while watching a movie. Only a true master of suspense can instill such dread in a viewer without any graphic or scary imagery. One of my favorite movie scenes of all time.

what makes the scene work perfectly is that arther. looked at robert. and he could see in his eyes he knew the truth. and started staring back more intensely. its such a small gesture that in another movie wouldn't matter. but in this movie. its huge. a small gesture that if caught changes the whole feeling. its just so fantastic.

I used to have trouble deciding what my favorite movie was. Then Zodiac came out. Not only is it wonderfully detailed and presented, it has a lot of humor in it that makes the world of the film feel that much more real. I've seen it over and over and still notice new things about it. (SPOILERS) For example, Toschi is this massive schnorrer who never pays for his own food, and at the end when he talks with Robert, you can tell he's been convinced because HE PAYS FOR DINNER. Holy shit.

Zodiac is one of the most underrated movies of all time, I'd say. It constantly gets overlooked by David Fincher fans. I don't even think it got a single Oscar or Golden Globe nomination either. And yet, Gone Girl got tons of praise and nominations. (Gone Girl wasn't a bad movie but I don't see it as being better than Zodiac.)

This film is a masterpiece. It really does make you obsess over it and genuinely frightens you to the core, especially when you find out that it's based on true cases that were never solved! After watching this, I researched all I could for a couple of days and was paranoid for weeks. I love all three main actors. At the beginning of the film, if I remember correctly, their characters start working together, but as the film progresses, each begin to become more obsessed with the case. They act more competitive towards/against eachother in order to solve the case individually. Their personalities grow a bit darker more and more. Jake's character even receives strange phone calls though no one talks back to him. I love this film! Every second is worth watching.

omkar shinde Just dont go down the rabbit hole. So many podcasts ive listened to have said our of ALL the stuff theyve covered not just true crime, but all conspiracies and alien stuff. Zodiac was the deepest rabbit hole theyve ever gone down by far. More than Jack the Ripper, more than 9/11 theories. Zodiac is just one of those cases, and because of time and all the lies mixed in to the evidence, itll never get solved in most people's opinion. Just save yourself and dont go down it.

I love everything. How the movie is shot, amazing editing, the 60s-70s atmosphere, the actors, EVERY-FUCKING-THING. It has some many amazing scenes, just for example, the "second" openings scene when Robert Graysmith goes to work and you can hear Santana - Soul Sacrifice in the background, just perfect.

Great review! It’s a credit to the director who makes a film about obsession and, in turn, makes the audience obsessed with the story. That’s how good Zodiac is. It is one of my favorite films, and I think it’s Fincher’s best work. It’s also one of the most rewatchable movies, not unlike Signs. Every time I watch Zodiac, I find myself going down the rabbit hole about the case and seeing if there are any updates. I agree it’s one of the best-directed movies ever made because it draws you in from the beginning and keeps you intrigued. You never feel the movie is long; in fact, I wish it were longer. Fincher does dark mystery/crime thrillers very well, and it’s his specialty, imo. My two other favorite movies of his are Seven and The Game. I also enjoyed The Killer and his work on Mindhunter.

Nelson Roscoe No can do, I could watch Back to the future trilogy back to back & still wouldn't get bored. Now about Steven Spielberg; have you seen his body of work? Dude's a legend. Well, speaking of 'body of work' we can argue between Kevin Smith & George Lucas although Star Wars will take over the other's entire filmography. I actually like Stanley Kubrick for The Shining & Eyes Wide Shut only. And I'm not too fond of Oliver Stone or Baz Luhrmann but thanks for sharing your opinion! PS: I also like Antoine Fuqua and Doug Liman.

Nelson Roscoe Whoa whoa whoa. You'd put Kevin Smith over Zemeckis, Spielberg, and Lucas? You can't be serious. Hey I like Smith and some of his films are great, but he is nowhere near the league of those three. Smith is also responsible for Cop Out... enough said! Zemeckis Spielberg and Lucas all have a few bad films here and there, but even their worst films can be considered superior to most filmmaker's finest films.

delivrex Alright, I can definitely respect that. The Back to the Future Trilogy is one hell of an accomplishment, being as accessible as it is. I understand absolutely what you're talking about when it comes to body of work. And I respect Spielberg I just think his movies are too mainstream, and I don't say that to seem hipster but seriously, how much help can one guy get? His movies are guaranteed blockbusters just based off of how much collaboration & clout the guy actually has in the industry. Spielberg can be anybody's Ace, but I prefer personal tastes. Spielberg is just Hollywood's Jew puppet. There, I said it. And Star Wars, the original Star Wars, is a Sci Fi masterpiece, but heavy lies the crown that corrupted that guy's soul and now you can't even find the original Star Wars. Lucas is definitely overrated, without range, and a dirty bloodsucker. The Shining is my favorite movie of all time. But seriously... No 2001, A Clockwork Orange or Dr. Strangelove? Technical and compelling. Truly. (Continued to next comment)

Fincher's most underrated AND his best film to date. In 1997, Fincher rewrote the book on the serial killer sub genre with Seven. After ten years, and god knows how many imitators, Fincher returned to the genre that made his name and decided to go down a different road. The film is all about detail and obsession, and attention to detail is meticulous in this film right from the production design all the way to the details the character try and absorb. Obsession also plays a part and how it leads the characters down a road that would change their lives forever, mostly not for the appealing. Zodiac is a masterpiece, saw it a week after its release and the theater was just empty. A great movie that was shamefully ignored by the so called awards committee.

Bruce Marlon I think that it was riding the groundswell of hype, breaking Titanic's box office record, well crafted effects, interesting (not necessarily good) performances, and an Oscar-bait paint by numbers story. I think they made good decisions in regards to the Oscars it did win (which were mostly technical).

Why did this one slip passed me over the year's?! Why did I waste time and money on horrible films and not see this at least once?! It's a beautifully shot film. Acting by all the characters was perfect. Props must have been brought in from around the world because I TRULY felt like I was in the late 60s and early 70s! They didn't do it where it was over the top and trying to make you believe it's 1970, you just felt like you were there and didn't have force it. My only complaint would be; Why did this movie even have to end?! I give it: A++

So glad to hear someone else appreciating this film the way it should. Without a doubt my favorite Fincher film and possible in my all-time top ten. Really bonkers to think how long it is, with hardly any action, and I can watch it without having to take a break. The editing is next level.

Zodiac is a very good film. However I feel that the South Korean movie "Memories of Murder" was much better. I am not sure if that is a true story, I don't think it is, but it does follow the same sort of approach, in trying to find a serial killer. Great review Chris!

was based on true story , I think that was the first korean serial killer case , great movie but still I think the zodiac is better because of the zodiac himself as a serial killer was very unusual to challenge the law enforcement the way that he did and a lot of people were involved on the case and even though he was never caught , David fincher portrayed this perfectly on the film

Alongside Fight Club, this is my favorite Fincher film, but I need some help with the ending. Spoilers When Gyllenhall's character goes into a shop at the very end of the film, he looks at a guy. The guy replies whether Gyllenhall's character needs something. Gyllenhall replies no, and then he walks out of the shop. I do think it's up for interetation, but do you think the guy in the shop was the killer? Most people around me hasn't seen the film, so I have nobody to discussit with. I personally think it is the killer.

Thats the same guy they interviewed at like a factory or something who had the watch. He was the police main suspect if I recall correctly but got ruled out because of his handwriting or something. He, to this day, is who people think was behind all the killings BUT never got any concrete evidence against him. He died in like 2003 or something so I guess this case will forever... be... unsolved...

@kilogreene8738
@kilogreene8738 5 жыл бұрын
I know I'm late lol. But yes, it's Arthur Leigh Allen. He's the prime suspect, still to this day. He died before he could be questioned yet again about the killings, so we'll never know. BUT, the point of that scene is a callback to the conversation he had with his wife after she took the kids and left. He tells her nothing makes sense and that he has to know who did it. He has to find them, look them in the eyes and know if they were the one who did it. After seeing Leigh's ID and birthday (Dec 18) he's fully confident it's him, since the killer called the lawyer's home "between Dec 18-20" and said "it's my birthday. I need to kill someone" Robert finds Leigh at his new job. He looks him in the eye, and we see Leigh's face change slowly from friendly and ready to help a customer, to what appears to be nervousness. It's as if Leigh knows that Robert knows he was the killer. We even see Leigh glance side to side, possibly hoping no one else notices the stare down. Leigh never seemed to even fear the police when they questioned him earlier in the movie. But now some random man he's never seen before stares him down and it scares him that his secret might be out. Sorry for rambling but it's just a great scene!

I couldn't agree more. I absolutely was enthralled with every second of Zodiac. I found it to be virtually flawless. So well done..The cast, the incredible cinematography, and the music used created the perfect mood for the movie. I own it on Blu-ray and watch it often. David Fincher continues to remind us of his genius with every film he makes. And now, Gone Girl is no exception. Absolutely mesmerizing. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it. The world is more interesting because of David Fincher.

La Oveja This is based on a real series of killings, ever heard of The Zodiac Killer? They never caught him. This is the perfect depiction of what happened, Fincher did a TON of research for this movie. Sorry this didn't follow the hollywood formula of "Lets see who the zodiac killer is, Old man Franklin!?!" "And I wouldve gotten away with it too, if it werent for you meddling kids" Fincher's best and most acclaimed film. You want to see a long movie? "The Good the bad and the ugly", "Once upon a time in america", Gone with the wind, schindlers list, lawrence of arabia, the godfather, all incredibely long and amazing films. A long movie isnt a bad thing UNLESS the movie is shit *transformers*
