Goreng pisang (deep fried battered banana) from Toa Payoh, Mee Rebus from Ang Mo Kio.. Kway chap is something more local- innards braised with soy sauce served with thick rice noodles.. Also, there are a few craft breweries about if you’re into beers..

Very rare to see people eating durian for the 1st time NOT having a violent reaction to the taste. And Zoe is right, it is an acquired taste like funky cheese. A good durian smells and hits you in the face on first bite, but lotsa character deeper in.

Thats likely because when most westerners try durian, they get the Thai version which is alot more intense and less sweet. The Indonesian and malaysian(which are more commonly used in Singapore) are much sweater and less pungent.

Durian ice cream is another good way of trying durian for the first time. Most of our foreign visitors are treated to that first before the fruit. My Swedish husband likes the creamy texture - we also have a durian tree in our garden. You can visit the hawker centre at Geylang Serai for nasi padang or even have it at Hajjah Maimunah.

Both you guys are spot on about the durians. Its a cultivated taste for many and just like other strong flavoured "pungent" food, one will grow to love it over time once the taste buds get used to it. Then you will dream of, crave for durians lol Happy to see you both enjoying the sights and sounds and the tastes. Eating is like a national pastime in SIngapore.

It is a multi- cultural asian society. Westerners will be impressed by the different types of food. Durian is good taste if u buy the good one, quite costly though. Try peranakan food which is unique to SG and MY. Unique to SG curry fish head, chicken rice, chilli crab. Visit hindu temple, mosque in kampong glam and chinese temple in bugis.

Local Singaporean here, welcome to our Food haven city. Its a real melting pot of cultures. Zoe was spot on about the Cheese and Durian experience. You should get a savvy local friend/youtuber to bring you to the famed hotspots(something to bare in mind for your next trip I guess since I only saw this when I got back from my trip). Never eat the mediocre variety when trying something new, best to go to the famed/notoriously well received places. Chicken rice is the soul food in these parts. Everyone has their own take on a dish. Hope you had a great experience here to warrant a 2nd trip.

Coffee in a Singapore coffeeshop or hawker centre is a lot stronger than your Starbucks or espressos you get from a typical cafe. They brew it in a sock and really taste great. The classic standard Singaporean breakfast is 1) 2 slices of toast, spreaded generously with coconut egg jam (termed Kaya) 2) 2 runny soft boil eggs, with dark soya sauce and pepper 3) a kopi O (pure black coffee - like your long black or Americano, but much stronger and more fragrant) Try the outlets like Killiney Kopitiam or Ya Kun Cafes.

@@ZoeandSimon if you find it too strong, what you can do when ordering the drink is to order add a “poh” word to the order. So it goes 1) kopi-O poh (americano) 2) Kopi-C poh (latte) 3) Kopi poh (the one with evaporated and condensed milk) For the kaya toast set. Try the one with the French toast at a Ya Kun Cafe. (Ya Kun Cafes are sprawled everywhere in Singapore)

due to lower supply of durian when its not in season, hence you would probably be paying x2 for the same quality you get during the season. Also, It is true that the quality is not as good because normally we import from plantations where the best crops are aligned to be harvested at the same time due to bulk orders.

those back lanes used to be wet and dirty, fill with smell, people throw rubbish (rahter than bin it) and pee there especially at night. not forgetting dogs and cats poo.....easily can be found daily. every certain day, as early as 8am, a truck with compartment doors on both side would go round the main road to collect containers of human waste (exchanged container). shop owners sometimes would leave them on their door or gate. As for the road side stalls, nice feeling and atmosphere as I could recall. However, not the best of food hygiene, some had limited supply of water to wash there soiled utensils. often, waste food were thrown into the drain resulting in drainage problems, overflow of water into the road and home to some extent. These were just few of the era time which I had gone through as I grew up in Chinatown. many more.... memories... left... good for the environment but you also loose some along the way

@@ZoeandSimon I believe he is actually referring to "heartland" hawker centres. Meaning the hawker centres outside downtown. Some of these are relatively accessible and have great food, the most common being perhaps Old Airport Food Centre which is near downtown and served by the MRT.

Hey, when you are worried about your waistline due to overeating. Good thing you are in Singapore, a very pedestrian-friendly city. You can simply burn the calories by walking a lot, and enjoying numerous beautiful parks spread out throughout the city. Or, rent a bike.

Yes, that was also our plan to stay fit 😁 We mainly walked around the city, so the damage shouldn't be too bad 😅

When we were in Singapore you had to check in to most places (for contact tracing) using your smartphone. Not sure if the system is still being used currently, as the regulations have been loosened in the past weeks 🙂

In our corporate offices in 🇺🇸 (NY) Durian is prohibited. We had en employee buy Durian in one of the Asian fruit stalls throughout the city and she brought it in to the office and the hunt for the source of the smell started. I didn’t think it was a big deal but someone thought it was and some paper pusher somewhere decided it’s prohibited to ever bring that in after this “incident”. I hate corporate life. Good on you for traveling the world. Love your channel F*ck working 😂

Thank you! Haha yeah in many hotels/hostels in Asia we also saw signs saying that you're not allowed to bring Durian inside. It's a very potent fruit 😁
