NOTE ON HOW I USE BOOKS: I filmed the books because I wanted to signal to you my research is grounded mainly in respected and published books. I hope they serve like citations in an essay. I left captions in the shot so you could pause and read them if you wish. Info on books is in the description box and are listed at amazon.com/shop/zoehong

Love the 30s fashion. Everyone loves the 50s but I fell in love with this era when I did a paper for my Intro to Fashion class. I especially love the escapism that Hollywood films and fashion brought to the era.

When I first found your channel, my goal was simply to learn to draw a basic pattern. I've since consumed massive amounts of information on not just patternmaking but how to construct the piece, where the roots of my inspirations come from, etc.. Please, the way you explain fashion as a "continuum" is excellent and remarkable. Besides your pronunciation of the English language is remarkably clear and perfect as a natural drop pearl. It would be an enormous pleasure for us to see how you navigate fashion across time. You deserve my best applause. Thank you so much.

If I could give this video 10 thumbs up, I would! There is so much inspiration in every garment shown here. I would love to have the garment industry back in the U.S., as it was in the 30s & 40s. People really took time out of their day to shop, style and "model' their clothing. The accessories are just the icing on the cake, but no less important to the overall look. Thank you, I've already watched this video 2x back to back and will definitely share.

I’ve been watching videos from historical costumers and fashion historians a lot recently, and it’s so cool and interesting how you all cover fashion history in different ways! You talk about it from more of a business sense and what influenced big trends, while they (especially costumers) talk more about how construction techniques changed and how fashionable silhouettes were achieved. Of course there’s some overlap, but I just think it’s really cool and interesting!

Very informative and visually interesting. Good job! I was hoping you would cover all fashion aspects of the 1930s including Art Deco modernism art effects on fashion, textile patterns and streamlined looks, platform shoes and other new shoe designs, the popularity of matching shoes, handbag and hat ensembles, the dominant styles of hats/millinery during this period with the 1920s cloche transitioning into bowler and cap styles, the introduction by Chanel and others of lace textiles resurfacing in the late 1930s with full lace gowns in modern slim forms, and the prominence of statement jewelry that became a style of fashion itself from art deco diamond and sapphire, onyx, jade and other precious stones to using large bold semi precious gems as aquamarines, amethysts, citrine, tourmaline, spinels and others and of course the precious stones of ruby and emerald. There is also with millinery gloves - gloves were as important as any accessory including hats. Gloves continued into the 1960s and included in the 1930s various styles and lengths. And last cosmetics - the period introduced makeup as glamorous and part of the fashion look. Lipstick became essential as did powder. The cases that carried cosmetics, the compact and lipstick cases were treated as jewelry themselves since they adorned women at cocktail parties and dates and affairs. Flato, Josef Hoffman, Verdura and many others introduced glamorous modern designs for jewelry and compact/lipsticks as well as cigarette holders and cases. All essential elements to complete the fashion look. Thanks for adding Ray Ban sunglasses. Last the one piece bathing suit became a huge fashion statement being minimalized and glamorized through the collaboration of Hollywood and Seventh Avenue companies as well as California brands including Jantzen and Catalina wear to promote Hollywood stars in form fitting swimwear in movies and promotional photography.
