The Ozempic epidemic started before you were born. How did thinness- a symbol of the lack of prosperity, abundance, slowly gain its association with health, self control, beauty, femininity, to ultimately- status?

I think the roaring 20s diet culture and thin culture excess can be explained because it happened right after the First World War. There was a shortage of food and rationing. Most people became really thin. And thus thin became the standard.

I also think the fashion industry during this era has a lot of the blame to take. Think about Chanel and her iconic dress, which was very squared and favored boyish, thin bodies, such as her own.

This was certainly not the case in the U.S. There was no rationing and no food shortage because we only fought in WWI for one and a half years.

I heard the quote "What if suddenly all women woke up and just loved their bodies? .. The fashion industry and makeup industry would probably go broke". That it just made me reaslise how many different organisations/shops "body shame" women or at least advertise with becoming skinny or hiding your fat. And it just opened my eyes. I mean- if you just think about it, beauty standards are basically toxic things men (mostly) thought of and now make our life miserable with and ( mainly insecure and girls that want to be accepted) promote them on social media platforms now, manipulating us into thinking that is important. When did this even start?? And why?? Why did some random people decided: We need to now make womens appereance our decision/things to judge and comment on?? And it also maked me sad that once someone started it (even as a little joke) mothers will tell their daughters and now they will even tell strangers these things over the internet, making it so fucking hard to stop it.

It wouldn’t though. I love myself and I love makeup. These aren’t mutually exclusive things. I wear makeup to have fun, I love making art on my face. I’m also a consumer of “diet culture” because I have a restricted diet due to a chronic illness. So I buy supplements that help me and I have to be conscious of my diet. That’s dieting, it’s not toxic for me because it actually keeps me happy and alive. It’s reductive and, frankly rude, to say that the only people who use such product must hate themselves.

i'd probably still buy makeup. cause a lot of people like my body. and a lot of people interrogate me when I don't use concealer over how sickly pale a look(caused by my disability). I could love my body all I like but without makeup would still have to answer the same question 30 times per day of whether I'm okay solely based on my appearance

Yeahh, it changed when science caught up with times. It was discovered that obesity is actually very unhealthy and can lead to a wide spectrum of diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol levels etc. Although it is not healthy to be obese, it is also not healthy to starve oneself or resort to drugs to maintain a skinny figure. It’s a double edged sword. It really comes down to personal choices and what people need to do for themselves in order to maintain good health.

I'm glad you mentioned this, because I think it has quite a bit to do with things. There's also the issue of sugar being put into literally everything - especially convenience foods. It's been pretty well established at this point that sugar is addictive, and when you pair that with your point of "affordable garbage food" being readily available, it's not hard to see how/why some of these issues exist.
@mikevasquez1103

@sunflowergirl264 Yeah. American BREAD often has added sugar even. The grain and sugar industries are federally subsidized. Factory farmingvis the norm. We have been fed lies about dietary cholesterol and fat for a CENTURY. Diet culture is a red herring compared to all of that. Besides, Nestlee alone makes more money than the ENTIRE DIET industry combined. Mon Santo is even worse. Diet culture would die on its own if we all united to fix our agricultural/food landscape.

This involves making healthy lifestyle choices such as eating nutritious foods, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and avoiding harmful substances. What really happened? you answered it already; previously, thin was correlated to sickness, lack of food and malnourishment, poverty etc. NOW, thin emphasises the ability tht although we are in an age of consumption and there is never any food unsourced, unavailable, food is by majority, plentiful for the majority - so NOT being obese, not having excess weight, not being fat shows a conservativism of self integrity over consumption and gluttony. We have it all - if you can be a healthy weight and take care of your body without over-consumption (which can be many things for many people including products) you are showing via physical appearance the self-integrity and care/respect you have for your body. But like most tings - this is multi-faceted and nuanced.

I feel like the fact that ZOE, who has previously spoken about her struggle with weight, just validates all the information presented in this video even more. Like, she's not saying being skinny is bad so be fat. She herself demonstrated in her own journey that you just have to find habits/routines that make you feel good, and the rest of her health/body changes followed. (She's not "skinny" naturally or because she starved/killed herself to look the way she does now, but rather looked for healthy life choices that brought her healthy results) So it's not a video where she's either in favor of or against skinny girls or fat girls, but rather wants to promote we shouldnt follow trends and just feel good with ourselves by making healthy choices.

I know about 20 girls who skip lunch and breakfast just to stay “good looking and healthy”. Healthy is eating your food, not throwing it up

Healthy should be the standard. Obesity is horrible, but starving yourself is just as bad. There is a such thing as a healthy diet without starving or overeating. Come up with a workout plan that works for your body the best, and foods that work with your body the best. Drugs will NOT help. If you stop taking it, you’ll gain the weight back because you never changed your diet or physical exercise. Ozempic, Mounjaro, Zepbound, should ONLY be used for those who need it to stay alive, rather than given to someone who never stuck to a workout or diet plan for 1 month. You have to know what’s your problem areas, what kinds of foods make you feel tired, to be healthy. We need to prioritize health instead of obesity AND “skinny”.

I had been obese and lost a bunch of weight the natural way. But, for some reason, I couldn't shake the last 30lbs. So I tried semaglutide... and it worked! Im down 18lbs with another 15 to go. I workout 4 days a week (I was doing that before the drug) and eating a clean diet. I feel more comfortable in my body than I have since I was a teenager. Its not just about appearances, I MOVE better and I am extremely thankful that this drug exists. The moral outrage that I've seen online has been bizzare to me. The argument being that diabetics aren't getting drugs they need doesn't make sense either because this is a medication that is prescribed. There are also plenty of alternatives to ozempic for those looking to control insulin.

Its crazy how industrialized their lifestyle is, to the point people will make a video teaching you how to make a “healthy homecooked meal” and all the ingredients come from packages and cans. They hardly make anything from scratch with actual fresh produce. Hell, they call making a sandwich “cooking”!! Makes me feel lucky for having grown up in a household where you had access to all types of organic fruits, vegetables, meat, etc, and all meals where prepared from scratch… and we were in no way rich. In fact, the rich people were the ones who would eat processed stuff bc they could afford it. Now its the opposite.
@isabellajaimie
@isabellajaimie Ай бұрын
As an American, I promise, its not all of us. We have been genuinely misled by the health and food industries as they have completely different goals, and we are not properly educated by our governments to be able to make these decisions ourselves. It's literally up to the individual to not fall for the b.s. of either side. And it IS embarrassing to see how ignorant the average citizen is on any of it. Many do not even consider the science behind it. And in terms of our food being industrialized, @lalailm, you're right. It's out of convenience. It is literally inconvenient here to be conscious of our health, food and lifestyle choices. Being healthy is a lot harder and is kind of isolating because of the over-consumption culture surrounding it all tbh. I try to stay as healthy as possible and people would call me neurotic when it comes to the food- but its literally because the food quality is so low, i can feel the difference after eating and most people aren't taught to be so aware of themselves that they don't realize that they feel sluggish and gross because of the low quality food they eat. That's not even mentioning how high quality food isn't completely accessible to everybody. It's a MESS out here
@lalailm
@lalailm Ай бұрын
@@isabellajaimie I really hope it gets better but realistically speaking, Idk if it will. In fact it seems like its getting worse EVERYWHERE not just the US. The quality of food in general has decreased and even the most simple ingredients like rice, meat etc are not as healthy as before… It almost feels like the only way of trusting that you are consuming 100% organic food is to grow it yourself. The US just seem to be ahead of the curve as the place where this landscape already normalized to the extreme. Like the other day I was watching a video discussing a tiktok trend on the US of “snacks households” vs. “ingredients households”. Apparently, in ingredients households, pre packaged and ready to consume foods are not the norm so people have to “make their snacks from scratch” with the ingredients they find. And this girl who said she lived in this type of household pulled a package of tortilla chips and a bag of pre-shredded orange cheese and showed how she made her snack from scratch. And that was so crazy to me. First bc a bag of tortilla is already a pre packaged snack to me, and second bc why buy pre-shredded cheese when you can buy a piece and shredd it yourself? Its cheaper. Idk, its just and example of how foreign the culture around food over there is to me. I know that a lot is due to people there not having other options and being forced to consume what’s available to them. But the convenience also seems to be taken to the extreme.
@isabellajaimie
@isabellajaimie Ай бұрын
@@lalailm The convenience is absolutely taken to the extreme! I am a real ingredients household, I tend to avoid pre-packaged snacks, but thats also because I am lucky enough to be with a person who likes to make food from scratch too. Tortilla chips are my weakness, and I know they're not good for me so I keep them out of the house unless I really really need a "cheat" day. I have noticed when I've traveled that food has gotten a bit more Americanized in terms of convenience, and I actually don't like it at all. I've been absolutely disgusted by commercials for convenient scrambled eggs... like it has pre-packaged diced vegetables and it's called "just crack an egg" where you crack an egg into this container with the gross veggies and put it in the microwave... As if its that hard to just make scrambled eggs, or pre-dice your veggies and have it at least a bit fresher than whatever they put into a (what I think is "food safe" plastic) container and heat it up via microwave. It pisses me off any time I see those ads because its just lazy, overpriced, and unhealthy. It's definitely concerning to see how humans have gotten so ridiculous when it comes to food. We try to make everything from scratch- or at least the most that we can. We make our own pizza crusts and plant-based cheeses now, and the quality, nutrients and taste is just soooo much better. The way of life we have in the states is not enviable when it comes to food, andit iss no wonder why we're having issues with obesity and the myriad of other health issues that plague us. Snack households are insane imo, but I get why they have them. It's a total mess because there are so many that are so busy that they just won't care to look into what they're eating, which leads to health issues, which then leads to more stress, which leads to bad eating- and the cycle continues. All so that the food industry can make a buck off of us. One of the biggest reasons I live in CA is because the food quality and culture around food seems a bit more "normal" than elsewhere in the states. Like we recently had some ingredients that are banned in Europe, also banned in California. Specifically, the ingredients that are found in genuine junk food, because they were found to have links to adhd, cancer and a whole bunch of other health problems. We're trying but we're so behind the rest of the world, and I pray that others don't follow our lead when it comes to the food. Food is life.

5:42: Um I don't know what your source is, but the Christians who did think that the body is evil were called gnostics, and they were condemned as heretics. Fasting in the Church is done to focus more of your time on prayer as well as as a reminder to seek ultimate nourishment from God. It is not done to punish your body. Please educate yourself on these things before you speak on them. No one was 'starving themselves to be holy'

Just to quickly clarify the “Christian’s starved themselves to be holy” It is known as “fasting” which is the restriction of your carnal. It does not lead you to be one step away from heaven’s door, as “starvation” implies, and it has many different versions. One does not simply stop eating, it is the suppression of the flesh WITH the increase of prayer, seeking out God and for modern times; reading your Bible. And getting ripped into scripture to ameliorate your spiritual sensitivity and relationship with Christ. This is done when one needs to feel closer to God, strengthen their spiritual relationship (as said earlier) or when they feel urged to by the Holy Spirit. It can also be done when you have a specific request. The notion of it blindly being “starvation” and depicting it as a mere fleshly act (which is what “starvation” is, it is different to “fasting”) is incorrect. Furthermore, it ranges from being a few hours, or perhaps 3 or more days (which is proven to not be harmful to the body, specifically because it is not a long-term thing; nevertheless, the physical benefits is not always related to the spiritual benefits of why Christians fast), heck- some only abstain certain foods from what they usually eat. For example, the Daniel fast. So it is important to not paint it as a mere “starvation” because it is not. Starvation is the death and suffering as a result of the lack of food. I understand it was a point to introduce the historical concept of not eating. However, it would be nice to carry out the needed research if one is to include religious aspects, as it can aid in portraying the already muddied perception of Christianity even further. Of course, this does not only extend to Christianity, it would be ideal to learn information on ANY religion being used/added in any future video, to avoid misconceptions. 👍

An excellent deep dive, nice video! One thing I think you're contradicting yourself on, though, is when you say that nothing was attributed to 'fatness' before the current trends started back in the 20s. This isn't true: you mentioned it yourself, it was considered a positive attribute as only the wealthy could afford it. So, a positive meaning was attributed to it. Being overweight is not healthy. Being underweight is not healthy. But the US brings both to a whole new level of insanity. (I am European). The amount of junk food produced and consumed in the US is staggering, and it has spread worldwide. Then, you invented all the medication to resolve the 'obesity epidemic' caused by the horrendous food you produced. Mind you, body shape trends come and go, and many women do not have the ideal hip-to-waist ratio, so they try to lose weight to get closer to that ideal. However, the hip-to-waist ratio will never be irrelevant. No fashion trend can erase millions of years of evolution, no matter how hard we try.

Yeah, It’s just science and society. Being thicker and fatter symbolized that you could afford to eat. However, downside is medical health wasn’t what it was today as it is back then. Obesity can lead to cardiovascular diseases, high cholesterol, diabetes, parasites, etc. On the flip side taking drugs or someone starving themselves to be skinny isn’t healthy either. Also Skinny people like to eat. They just exercise more and fitness is modern practice now compared to back then. It video is a bit selective with what it’s portraying
