I definitely feel you on the bystander intervention point. I see it quite often, but 3 years ago I experienced something I will never forget. We saw a man yelling at woman for having her dog sit on a public bench to take a photo. He then pushed her dog off and then pushed the woman. I was in shock, trying to comprehend the situation. His anger escalated and he punched her in the face. At the point i ran over intervened by pushing the man away, and so did my German husband. The man got scared and ran off. Later after my nerves were calmer I realized that I was more upset that not a single person, including the woman's husband stepped in to stop this violent man. Since then, every year the woman sends us a Merry Christmas message and a thank you for stepping in for helping her. I understand the reasons for not intervening (in order to not escalate a situation further) but disagree with it.

Lived in Paris and the indifference when something is happening on the metro or bus was terrible for me. I am South African and had a verbal attack on the metro by two drunks, had wine poured on me, and people sat there and watched until they got off the train. Only then did people then come up to me to ask if I was okay... I cried, in South Africa as much as there is crime, people don't stand by and just watch, if they can help they do!

Standing around and watching a person get attacked, graped, etc, speaks loudly about the morality and character of the people. Since we're speaking about Berlin, I'm not surprised. I suppose I'm just so used to Schopfheim. As an African American woman, I must say that at the end of the day, I do love Germany and look forward to making a permanent move.😊

You can also call your Krankenkasse and ask for a doctor if you don't already have one. I hope that helps. It sadly changed over the years. When I was young, you could find doctors easier. About the cash thing in Berlin: Rents are very high here (I come also from Berlin) and if someone pays by card, the restaurant gets 1 or 2 percent less money than if it's payed by cash... and they already earn not much so I can understand it. Sorry to hear your negative experience with non helping people.

Hey Zoie. As always you look so so beautiful. Love the look. I have not been able to find a new doctor where I live now and it's a pain. Yes I have been here and I have personally faced this where I had to deal with it on my own. I was shouted at and no one intervenes. You are definitely on your own. It's really sad. I am sorry you had to deal with that because especially now that I am more alone in the new city I live in, I know that I can't expect help if I need it from bystanders. Overall I like Germany but you are right there are good and bad wherever you are at. I am really happy you mentioned this because now I don't feel alone. Love you and take care❤❤❤❤

I moved back to Berlin and was turned away from the Frauenarzt I was lucky to have had an emergency once before I moved so I returned to the same office. Luckily they had space for me. There was a new Dr as well and I've changed to her. Loved the other lady but the new one speaks to me better. I think you have to go in early morning huffing and puffing to get service.

Also from the States living in Germany for 2 years. Completely agree with you. Summer this year was not... summer. I also still havent figured our the doctor situation. I've found that doctors will also say they speak English on doctolib but you show up and that's not the case... my German is improving but i dont always have the specific vocab for medical appointments. Why say you speak English on doctolib if its not professional (medical) English?!

Hey! I had the same issue last year where I got a gyno who said they could speak English. I showed up and then she said she actually can’t and I had very specific questions I needed to ask and in the end I left feeling unsure about my visit and not fully educated 😅😞. My German is also at a good level but on those specific topics my vocabs just not there so I’m with you on that. Just sucks.

Regarding bystander intervention I hope you're wrong about that in general. I have intervened a couple of times and I've seen others intervene too. And maybe your experiences can be explained by Berlin being a large city where people are more reserved and shy away from meddling with other people's lives. However regarding a couple of more recent situations it seems to me that people have become a bit more indifferent but also a bit more aggressive. And particularly the latter could be a bigger obstacle to intervention now. Things seem to have changed in the course of the last 10, 15, 20 years.

As a jamaican woman i used to live ok darmstadt germany, i left for the us in may. I lived there for three years. Its was ni e and everything but the people are cold and unfriendly. I never made not one german friend, every one was expats like my self or other immigrants. I didnt like how it was difficult to get simple little things like a dog and the fact that auslandebehorde darmstadt is impossible to get i had to put their number on redial to get them. Racism is subtle but pissed me offffff!!!!!!!!!!! I dont wanna dwell but overall it was an ok play. Yep customer service is non-existence, like you customer service am like what??? There is none. Back to racism i remember my bf had a shoulder problem( btw healthcare is top tier) covid was over we went to this town i think in heppinheim. There was this girl at the door who stop us and had us waiting outside in the cold while every one just passed and went in. I had behave like a wild banshee to get some recognition, and she had thr nerve to use covid as an excuse and when i said, you let everyone else pass, all of a sudden her english became non-existence.

to this healthcare issue, germans experienced this a lot themself at the covid time and months after. because hospitals and stuff like that could make their own rules for entrance. ex somewhere you needed nothing, next place vaccine passport, next place tested no more than 24 hours before, next place you have to had your boost, here masks - over there not etc. and then of course places where all things had to be mixed up. forgot your vaccine passport because covid was over? yeah, bad luck. happened to me and im whiter than snow.

Sorry but Germany is starting to irritate me as a black woman. First of all, Germans are so rude. Sometimes it hard to tell if they are being rude to me because they are just a mean person or if they are rude because they are actually racist. Then, Germans are extremely standoffish and cold people and its hard to be friends with them. It's even hard to get a bf here without using dating apps. German guys don't even notice, check you out, or talk to you anywhere. Its so bad for me in Germany both socially and romantically.

1) Find a doctor: The reason why you cant get an appointment although the number of doctors literally explode is simple: If you call a doctor, you will hear something like this: "Our opening hours are Thuesday and Thursday from 9am to 11 am." In other words: You need 10 new doctors to replace 1 old. 3) Bystanders: That is a real german thing. There have people even died because they needed help but nobody reacted. I am on crutches and when I asked a sitting person at Hamburg Central Station if he would let me his sit, his simple answer was: "Nope!" While in London a gentleman even hopped off the tube just to let me sit and ride in the tube!

I agree they live old school, diversity is there but black people almost stay with black people or they are family or only 1 black person in a group of Germans. I am from Montreal and every ethnicities hang out with everyone. My boyfriend is Caucasian and I am a black women, everyone stares at us! I don’t know if it was my nord-American style or interracial is not a thing there???!! . Apparently he looks very German. A lot thought he was one of them . He is Canadian. The doctor issue is one of the main downsides of universal healthcare. Here in Montréal 🇨🇦, I was on a waitlist for 2.5 years just to get assigned a home clinic, and have yet to be assigned a family doctor because of the shortage of healthcare professionals. Navigating the public health system can be very frustrating, but I wouldn't trade it for the U.S.'s for profit system.

The fact that have to add the declaimer is wrong (though not limited to Germans :D )... 1st point: The bad side of our healthcare system, deliberately broken by 32 years (with a short interruption) of a specific party being in power ruining it. 2nd point: What, Berlin is THAT much backwater underdeveloped? OK, I stay in Stuttgart (well, actually near it, not in). Thanks for the warning! 3rd point: Sadly true. We could bring up some historic excuses, but they are just bad excuses... 4rd point: Thanks for the warning :D. 5rd point: We call it "Servicewüste" aka "Service-desert". Luckily not everywhere, so be selective. 6th point: You got Germanized in you ability to complain without beating around the bush. Jetzt bist du wirklich deutsch. :D

I'd heard that in Germany they only accept cash. But please, even if you have to go back to NY, please see a doctor. So many women are getting cancer younger and younger. So you need to have your annual check-ups, no matter what they are. Don't let things like that go. It's important. As far as people not helping others when someone is bothering them is not just in Berlin. I work i NYC and I see it all the time. That's why I was so proud of the black people in the Montgomery River Front brawl. They saw a black man being jumped on by several whites and they came to his aid. I'm originally from Alabama and I was so proud that day.

Your work is interesting indeed yet not quiet accurate. Even in the US (a real broken health system) many doctors do not accept new patients. Same applies to people witnessing crimes, due to the crazy and frankly sick litigious society the US is people are reframed from getting involved to avoid litigation (being sued). That said, I am surprised that is the case in Germany but take your word for it.

That's plain nonsense. Germany is a capitalistic market economy like all other economies in Europe. I'm wondering from where or how you're getting such ideas.
@vernunftzuerst6491
@vernunftzuerst6491 Жыл бұрын
Where do that come from? We have no Socialism or Communism in Germany. We have a few small social Systems integrated into a Capitalistic System. And this is complicated. It is not "collapsing right now", it has mistakes and issues from begin on. It's not good to have those problems and it's ok to criticize them - let me correct that, it is important to criticize! So the point in the video that they tell u "We have no place here for new patients" is actually a big point. If you live somewhere, have found ur doctor and have the "normal small or a little bigger health issues sometimes" like having a cold or problems with your back or even if u need to go to hospital, u will get all the help you need. The problems with especially the health system are just a bit unpleasant if you need to find a new doctor or need to see a specialist and have to wait or if you have mental health problems and have to wait even longer and that's awful, I see it too. Really big problems u CAN get with complicated or rarely diagnoses and need more help than just a doctor. And it IS awful and I see it to. But that's not "collapsing".
