I like that the kids are in it myself. It gives agency and relatability to any kids that might play this game. Its generally just a what if scenario having the kids in it.

I don’t mind the kids being included since there would be kids in the middle of this situation. Throughout history kids have been there through major atrocities and had to find a way to survive with or without adult help. The pimp thing feels very video gamey and a little tacky but not a deal breaker. Easily overlooked for me. Good review.

As someone that has owned every Zombicide since the original at some point, my favorite change is the simplest....having the skills printed on the back of the character card means I can finally stop printing out lists of skills to share with people at the table

Would house ruling in player elimination change the balance of the game at all? I'd only implement the rule if everyone playing was okay with it. Sometimes I feel that having a player death result in an instant loss takes away from the "story" of the game if that makes any sense. It's exciting to have 1 or 2 survivors remaining on the brink of defeat with a slight chance of making it out.

​@@robando2922 I don't understand why the creators didn't just make it so that once someone dies, maybe that person becomes infected and has a "weakened" setting. And maybe have medicine around to find to cure that person or people as they become infected... if the entire team becomes infected everyone loses. Seems like such an obvious design..

Lovely camera angles. It seems a little more coordination between the presenter and the director is still required. Yet I loved it and thanks a lot for that. - And I think Zee was the best to review a game of this caliber. He was into this game (I know he has a special handmade deck of his own for Black Plague- maybe as most of us do). Yet not that much into all the expansions and deep in all other versions that could affect his judgment. I remember what happened after the Reichbusters video, and I think here, he was the perfect guy to do this.

zee - the kids thing is actually really requested - think Stranger Things. They started it in Green Horde with a nod to ST, and then in the Invader expansion had a kids set. It is appealing to playing with kids and RPG is really hot right now - kids want representation in games as well. I feel CMON is doing a great job on evening out the heroes to guy/gal ratio and have started to include wheelchair type characters as well as the age representation instead of just the buff soldier archtype

19:48 Early death sounds about right. I tried the web scenario Amy Original Story TWICE, twice my game ended in 4 rounds. It took me 3 times as long to setup the game than to actually start rolling some dice and packing up almost immediately after. 🤣

I've only played Zombicide for one short session. It was a miserable experience. The owner quarterbacked the entire thing so we never properly learnt how to play it. It was also one hour before the venue was going to close, so he picked a "short" scenario. The first two attempts were abortive because some noise condition meant failure was inevitable. By the third attempt, he worked out a game plan that wouldn't result in failure but the venue was closing so we never finished that either.

Based on these rules, I'm house ruling Black plague. No more dice rolls to open doors with a melee weapon. I may even treat my "Double Spawn" cards as the "mini rush" Zee was referring too. I don't have enough room or $ to buy and keep all these big box games!!! 😱

They introduce 2 mechanics in the expansions which can be easily integrated into every game, which from my PoV are absolutely necessary and should have been in the core box. All Out dice, where you can trade additional damage potential for the risk of breaking your weapon. a) additional decision making and b) keeps the search action relevant for later in the game. Other thing is day night cycles where darkness and also dark zones help Out hiding from zombies but Impact your ability to attack. They add a ton of tactical decision space to the game. Should really have been in this and I wouldn't play without them.

Thanks for the review, Zee! We already own this one, but it's always nice to see what other people think, especially when it's people you respect. So, not Tom ;-) Tossing in my unrequested 2 cents, I don't mind the kids so much. The theme of the game is rather tongue-in-cheek anyway and the kids reflect that in the art style and all that. Besides, there are enough characters in the core set to where you can play without them if you want and still have some adult characters that have the slippery ability. As far as the pimpcrates and pimpmobile stuff goes, color me old school but those terms don't creep me out personally. We used that term regularly "back in the day" to describe something that was enhanced in some cool way. I've never thought of it as creepy or off-putting to people. I totally agree on the time estimate though. We have played a couple of times in smaller, easy-rated scenarios and they took 2.5 hours or more with 2 and 3 players. Still fun, but definitely misleading. Thanks again for the review and have a stellar weekend!

Did black plague have player elimination? I know green horde doesn't-I added black plague content recently to my Green horde (albeit probably unnecessary), but ultimately, Green Horde still feels like the best of all worlds. One of the most unsung heroes of green horde is the bushes-It sounds minor, but adds a huge tactical element-not to mention tension when a horde is really close, but can't hear you because you actively made someone else visible or noisier further away. There's also the added importance of going through a bush with or without someone on the other side. Each movement seems to matter more, so sometimes you have to push your luck and go through a bush without visibility and risk a zombie popping up and forcing you to waste precious time. Furthermore, the orc zombies are no joke-definitely not just a gentle poke-very easily game ending, but I like that the goblin runners only do 1dmg. Then there is there is the most noticeable additions with the horde and the trebuchet, which I won't go into, but really adds so much to the game. Oh, and finally the Necromancers, whom I feel are way more interesting than the abominations. Ultimately, I still have not played 2.0, but it looks like some good stuff-I'm especially interested in the nightime and flashlight mechanics that come in ZC and Fort Hendrix, although, thematically, I'm not crazy about modern zombies with guns. I can accept fantasy skeleton archers because of the Necromancers and the "Army of Darkness" feel, but both of those expansions have a drawback in terms of (a) I couldn't care less about the president theme and (b) an army base doesn't feel that interesting on top of my feeling for modern zombies with guns-I like to think of modern zombies as more a epidemic, which is why I feel zombies with guns works less thematically. Oh and I've never liked the "pimp-weapon" mechanic or cars on such a small map... And I CANT STAND THAT THEY STILL CALL THEM "Pimp-Whatever"-it just sounds super-lame. Call them "Advanced Equipment", "Modified Cache", "Superior Depository"-or my personal choice-Simply, "Expert Arsenal"....anyways-dumb. Well, hopefully, this is their last zombiecide-I seriously cannot believe people aren't overly saturated with this type of zombie game. Personally, I look forward to a more "Last of us" type of struggling to survive zombie game or maybe just not another full-on zombie game for a while.

I'm done with the Zombie genre, but I picked up Zombicide Invader kickstarter. And really like that, it's more claustrophobic and Alien-like. Also helps I like painting miniatures. ;-)

It's understandable. I was a tough sell on it until I got to play a demo of it, and I like it for what it is; a roller coaster'ish beer and pretzel slam bang. Frankly, the Night of the Living Dead version is much better for a "proper" zombie game, but the vanilla Zombicide has it's place. Plus I like the figs.

Nice review as always Zee!!! I didn’t see you you mention they changed the friendly fire rule that made Sam and many of us hate the 1st edition. As for pimp weapons and mobiles, totally agree, call them “uber” or “awesome” while not bringing the whole prostitution imagery into the game. As for the kid survivors, unlike all other Zombicide base games I know, this one comes with 12 survivors (6 adult and 6 children) so you can play without the children if you don’t want to. With Invader, if you hated the civilians or military, you have to play with them if you just have the base game.

Zombie Rush ability sounds horrible: The "All 'x' Move" was bad enough. My biggest question was whether they added Concentrated Fire into it (from Invader) but it sounds like they didn't. I hope there are a lot of Molotovs!

Pimping means to improve and/or enhance. The TV show Pimp My Ride. Pimping your game with custom tokens, counters, deck holders is a common thing. Hopefully in the year since this came out Zee has gotten a little more up to speed with this stuff.

It's not that he's unfamiliar or doesn't know what it means, it's that he feels it's tacky and dated. Pimp My Ride came out in the mid-2000s, Big Pimpin was a song from 2000, people don't really use the term that much these days. Use it in this context around a bunch of teenagers and they're going to cringe hard.

Naming the car this way has nothing to do with subscribing or supporting the idea of pimping at all. If you would see a car on the street with obscene gold rims, furry pink seat covers you could also call it a pimpmobile and it wouldn't be incorrect.

Cool review, although I'd rather kids survived than were just presumed to be zombie food. Also "pimped" still means "make (something) more showy or impressive", doesn't it? Just as "hooker" can mean a rugby player, a large drink or a concealed problem. Words can have more than one meaning, and in the context of Zombicide, "pimp" pretty obviously refers to the 'upgrades' meaning, and nothing at all to do with prostitution.

Yes you re right I find it cool also, but in the US, with thousands of kids killed every years with fire weapons in schools… its kinda like GTA game with kids driving and wielding guns, think about the scandal it would make ! Too close to the reality… 😢

@Paul it’s the parents job to work things like this out with their kids. I used to play all sorts of gore games when I was 8 years old. I played GTA games when they came out and I was a around 12 or 13. My parents hated video games because they are waste of time but my dad never stopped me from playing what I wanted but he made sure to let me understand the difference between reality and video games and he made sure that I knew if I did something bad I will end up in a bad place something parents these days would never bother to teach their kids.

The kids and use of the word pimp as “pimped out” are probably indications of the fact the designers aren’t American. These may not be perceived the same way in France, so it’s likely a simple cultural difference.

I think you're absolutely right. I'm from Belgium (France is a neighbouring country), and i also associate the word "pimp" with something "pimped up" in this game. Not at all with pimps in their original meaning. So I'm really fairly certain this is a very innocent thing. It's a (weird) way for saying that these items are better than the standard items.

Not especially equivalent systems. But maybe this will help you decide: C:DMD has a lot more variation in scenarios and game set up, making each scenario feel much more unique and interesting compared to Zombicide. But C:DMD would be much harder to teach casual gamers; it’s a streamlined system, but still has a lot of special powers and interactions between the different Investigators, Ancient Ones and scenario rules. Also, the scenarios being more specific makes them less fun to replay (you “know the gimmick”). So if you play with dedicated gamers and don’t expect to play the game 20+ times, C:DMD is probably better. Zombicide can be played more with the base box (especially with all the free official scenarios online) and is more casual-player friendly.

I think the problem he has is the idea of a kid being ripped limb from limb by zombies in the game. Or a kid basically being a child soldier firing automatic weapons. Honestly reminds me of the whole "Bethesda sucks" discussion in video games because some nerd gamers are mad you can't kill kids in the new gamse like you could in the original Fallout.

@@koalabrownie Zombiecide isn't supposed to be realistic, it's more a fun take on the apocalipse, like Dead Rising, so not having kids wouldn't be a problem (as it wasnt in the previous edition). But still, it's cool to have "kids" (they are teenagers actually) survirvors in my opinion. I just wished we had gotten zombie kids as well. PS: About the Fallout, as the game is a little more serious in tone, it breaks imersion a little not having any kid anywhere. But not to the point that it ruins the experience.

@@OrdemDoGraveto There's kids in Bethesda's fallout games, you just can't kill them. Same with the Elder Scrolls. They're invulnerable. I don't know all the ins and outs but, the kids as I got from this review don't see that distinguished. They have less health and slippery ability? What else? It's more like Goblins from bloodbowl, rather than a kid in and of itself. Maybe for example kids have problems with some weapons but they can access some places or alternate routes that an adult cannot? There's lots of ways to distinguish them than just half health and slippery.

They could have no distinguishible trait from any other survivor and I would still think it's cool to have a bad ass kid as a survivor. I don't know why you are so sensitive about kids being in a zombie game, have you been living under a rock for 10 years? Kids in horror games/TV shows have been a thing for a long time. Kids love zombies and love seeing representation of themselves when they play this game.

@@guyblin however you cut it, the word "pimp" means someone (usually a man) who controls prostitutes, usually with violence. Regardless of what YOU think, you CaNNOT guarantee that all players will think like you. Its such a stupid thing to include in the game. Doesn't bring ANYTHING.at all. Completely gratuitous and dumb.

Kids that are playing want to be able to find a kid character to play. It makes sense.

As I mentioned in another comment, if a game like The Last of Us can have a kid as a central character in its zombie apocalypse scenario I don't see an issue with it here.

@@memoman88 I seriously doubt many kids want to play as kids in the game- when kids play Marvel games, are they clamouring for child super heros? Or are they having fun with Captain America and Iron Man?
