That was a great lesson. I’ve been learning for quite a while and still didn’t have my head around following the chords. It was nice to finally hear that the pattern doesn’t change as the chords changed. After all these years I thought that was going to be my next challenge. Understand why I learned the CAGED shapes and targeting the chord tones within the pattern and shapes already know is a bit of a revelation. Thank you for making this video.

This is a very useful and in-depth look at how to link the CAGED system to chords and to scale. More importantly, how to use the CAGED system ways of targeting chord tones as your progression changes while staying in the key scale. This is a very powerful tutorial and how you are able to tie them all together was awesome and mind-blowing. Brian's combination of clear, to the point explanations and visual aids are why I like his lessons. With the visual aids, we can concentrate on the ideas he is trying to present instead of constantly rewinding to figure out which fingers are on what frets, like many other YT lessons. On Guitar Zombie, you can see how he has organized the whole site - he has taken the perspective of a new learner and constructed a road map with all the steps in order to become a competent player. You don't see that on many sites, they skip around and there is no order. I have had quite a few breakthrough moments where I finally understood something I was struggling with on Guitar Zombie

I look at CAGED as a collection of octave patterns, like buoys or navigation markers. Sure, you can put any chord type around them. If you're only playing a single root note in a chord, the direction of your fingers will show the next octave root note. That's how you'll know which shape it is.

It would be nice to have full fledged examples of applications to musical ideas using these concepts, maybe incorporating chords and melody lines to reallly get a groove and feeling , i think feeling is so important part of playing , you know when it feels good its fun and its gotta be good, you know like slowing bending that 14fret G string to the 15 B string. Again, brilliant lesson. Much of ones frustration boils down to not actually knowing the fretboard "in time" to whatever on is trying to play along to. I can find every not on the fretboard but when the chords are changing it can be confusing even if you realise that often chords share notes. Getting familiar with the caged system will teach the fretboard by teaching chord spelling by shape. Anyway just a thought.

Exactly...keeping up with the chord changes isn't easy. That's why this type of approach (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJazZ59qYqhnrsU) will be much easier for most people than trying to spot entire CAGED shapes 😁

In a world where millions of people think that they "already know this CAGED stuff, so no need to click"... it's hard to battle the avalanche of misinformation. The solution is clickbait-y titles and thumbnails. I just haven't found the exact title/thumbnail combination to use that will get the traction that I'm looking for.

You don't necessarily have to arpeggiate each and every chord, but paying attention to the underlying chords as opposed to just the overall key is what makes the difference. Start out by practicing over common chord progressions such as I V vi IV or vi V IV 😀

When you do the 7th using then chords at 18:23 Am7 do I only have to lower one 1 to a flat 7 or all the 1’s

You just need to get the 1, b3, 5 and b7 in there...one instance of each is fine. You can also drop the root and/or 5th if necessary (usually applies to extended chords though) 😁

Random question , Brian (or if anyone knows). When you are doing an arpeggio, such as a Major add 9 arpeggio, I see that at least on the diagram I saw that the order of notes in ascending is 1-3-5-9. Can you do it in this order: 1-2-3-5? Does that change it or diminish its effect when it comes to the harmony? Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can do it like that. "Add9" implies that the 3rd is present. "Sus" means that there isn't a 3rd. So yes a 1 - 2 - 3 - 5 arpeggio run would still count as an add9 arpeggio 😁

Question: So, do all other notes in the scale pattern get treated as "passing" tones? Can (Should) I use the other notes, or do I need to know which notes in the scale SHOULDNT be used? As you say, playing in the scale is always going to sound "OK" but some notes sound more "OK" than others, should we focus on NOT using some notes in the scale? as well as focusing on notes that lead INTO chord tones? Because, that makes it a bit more difficult and cerebral... (i.e. What do I use to GET to the chord tone)

Chord tones chord tones chord tones chord tones - target them. Got it. HOWEVER, to create a certain unexpected 'colour' or emotional feel, you MAY want to target a 9th or a 6th or a 7th while this could mean your soloing doesn't remain predictable and/or cheesy. Right?

He is laying the foundation here. Of course the next step is adding in the other scale notes. He does a very good job of methodically explaining. The other scale tones are beyond the scope of this lesson

@Mark Welsh wherever your ear guides you will be the right thing to do...triad tones will typically be the strongest tones though. Therefore it's a good idea to always be aware of where they are!
