Sweetheart, I love that you want this type of lifestyle with the chickens and the gardens. I have enjoyed every one of your videos and love your little house, but would you consider taking some advice from an old lady who's been gardening for at least forty plus years? I see a problem with the way you are planting things everywhere. I'm not talking about flowers and shrubs, but when you have vegetables here, there and everywhere, you are creating a lot of extra work for yourself. If all of your potatoes for example, are together, then you can fertilize, mulch and tend to them at once instead of dragging all your tools and supplies to several locations. The black plastic pots you have rescued from the dumpster and are using are a great idea, but remember that black absorbs heat and while peppers might love it, strawberries and tomatoes might not. The number one valuable lesson that I've learned is mulch, mulch, mulch! And I recommend shredded paper like cardboard. Wood mulch is often chemically treated and not good for edible plants. But if there is a company in your area that does professional shredding, you may be able to get free mulch from them. The best thing about using paper mulch is that it will degrade into the dirt and earthworms love it. Don't get white paper shreds though because when they dry out, the wind will blow them everywhere. Get brown cardboard if it's available. Once good and soaked, it usually stays put. You can transform clay soil into rich brown dirt with paper. I've done it. Another thing about pots, they can define your garden space by lining them along your borders or even use them as rows with paths in-between. Just a few thoughts. I've learned everything I know the hard way, maybe you can benefit from some of my mistakes. Happy gardening. The chickens look great.

Irish spring soap if you shave the soap potato peeler and put the Shavings around where the deer and other animals try to eat your plants. It'll deter them to eat them especially dear they don't like irish spring soap.!

@nancyculp6968 Жыл бұрын
You need to rent a tiller and establish an area just for a garden (for food). This way you would be able to control the weeds and not have to run from spot to spot. After the area is tilled, take a dirt sample to your local cooperative extension office, or send it, to see what nutrients your soil needs to help your plants grow. Tell them the size of the area you will be working with and ask how much of ingredients you will need to add. Also, certain trees might need to be trimmed back to get them to fill out…instead of just growing a long stick. You can ask a nursery or google it. It takes awhile for fruit trees to grow and produce. I know my blackberry bushes had to have something to climb on for their runners to have hook on to for the fruit. Birds do love any kind of berries! They also love tomatoes too! If you look for a small tiller you can make your rows in your garden where you can just till in between them and not have to weed except around the plant. Also a small tiller can break the ground around your house to make some pretty flower beds. I do know that pecan trees have to have a mate to produce pecans. They give great shade and supply you with nuts. Keep watch out in paper for people that might be wanting to get rid of a chicken coop. I think you need so many sq feet per so many chickens! Plus, I think they need a place to run around, outside of the main area. Happy chickens will produce more eggs. 😊

It takes 2 years for onions to grow. Use green onions this year. Next year they should flower and if you have a dedicated area for onions, you might have a forever onion patch. Please water plants more. They look dry. Seeds need a lot of water, so new plants. If you plant anything in the ground, pull weeds out. They take resources from plants you want. Weeds would also prevent seeds from sprouting. Strawberries, raspberries and any other berries need a lot of water. Not enough water means not a lot of berries, and what you get will be small, seedy and sour.

You need an area just for your vegetables, etc. When they are planted just in the yard, they have to compete with the grass and weeds for the nutrients and water. Till an area for your garden and keep it free from weeds and grass. You will be amazed how much better your vegetables do. You can also put a small fence around the area to keep out the rabbits, which can devour your plants.

Cam ,please look into whether you really want to keep that Trumpet vine. Two of my friends have them in their yards and they are very invasive. You do not harvest asparagus until the 3rd. year. They need at least 2 full seasons of growth. Figs need to be water frequently and deeply, plus your tree looks young so may take a year or 2?
@DumpsterCam Жыл бұрын
The fig produced fruit last year, so I think it may have struggled over the winter, hoping it can still thrive though! I'll definitely work on giving it extra water, thank you! For the asparagus, all that I've seen is you don't harvest it until year three, but the first 2 years you let it sprout and go to seed. It's been over a month and no shoots or sprouts, not sure it's still viable, but sometimes things just grow all of a sudden 😆 fingers crossed
