@@GolfFoxtrot22 Yep, the 2 years kind of snuck up on me!! Totally agree on the never stop learning - that was my focus on the reval - not to seek confirmation, but to find any little (or big!) errors that had crept in - it was an awesome session, pretty intensive hour of circuits, practice engine failures - learnt a load! Part of the grass extension has been lowered and smoothed out, but the rest is still rough - generally best avoided 🤣 We are rather spoiled for where we fly. Hi Al, I passed my FRTOL in 1996, I do have a read every now and then or when changes come out. There was just a lot going on, I could always hear what they were saying. It was however a fantastic experience. I spoke to the controllers afterwards and it was great for them to see the joy it gave us being allowed through.

Hi Phil, glad you are enjoying the videos. My trike doesn't have too many issues but Mark's and Ben's do. The biggest issue I had, was due to my mic being live all the time, I hear all the engine noise so I was struggling to hear their calls a few times.

WOW! This is your best video ever, Giles. I’m so pleased you covered all those radio calls - that was such a lot to take on board. And your graphic ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this’ made me grin. But I could really appreciate how awesome you all must have felt - passing over jets taking off, and Edinburgh’s conurbation with so few land-outs (thank goodness Mark’s spark plug cap didn’t come off then!). So one question - if you had known all you had to deal with before you left Balado, would you still have set off? And if so, would you have been worried? Cheers. John
@GolfFoxtrot22 Жыл бұрын
Hi John, I enjoyed your last video, when I saw your hands come off the bar, I was willing you to retract your gear. To answer your question, I think with flights like this, you just break the flight down to parts and deal with them as they crop up, but also planning before what you need to do. I knew where I was going, what I needed to say ( with a few exceptions), but the flying part is just second nature, so that takes that part of the stress away. In hindsight I really enjoyed the challenge.

nice video. I have transited busy airfields many times in light aircraft but to do it in it with the handheld radio, no transponder and nowhere to put your pen is really impressive. Do you need to comply with land clear rules in this type of aircraft?
@GolfFoxtrot224 ай бұрын
Hi Chris, it did help having spoken to my them on the phone beforehand and writing all the frequencies on my chart before hand. It just threw me slightly when they rerouted on handover. Yes we do still have to abide by the land clear rule so we were picking fields and golf courses as we flew along. I hope you enjoyed the other videos that cover the whole adventure? I had my general aviation license flying from a control zone. Negative Tango Charlie Oscar stay in the holding pattern till you break into a sweat. Do you know of any Training companies for Ultralights in Yorkshire? i can find microlight and i can find paratrikes but not ultralights in Yorkshire.
@GolfFoxtrot225 ай бұрын
Hi Martin, microlight and ultralight are the same thing. The word ultralight is not used in the UK, it's more of an American and European term. I hope that helps. Are you looking to fly flexwing or 3 axis?
@MartinBarker5 ай бұрын
@GolfFoxtrot22 My father is doing licences, and getting hours in a microlight a full-bodied plane also I will say that is stupid American and European so the UK are just wrong then the rest of the world agreeses on a term and we don't...
@MartinBarker5 ай бұрын
@@GolfFoxtrot22 The UK's decision to deviate from globally accepted terminology seems ridiculous; it encompasses a category that ranges from parachutes to fully-bodied planes only in the UK. There is a microlight facility in Sherburn, yet they operate solid-bodied aircraft.
@GolfFoxtrot225 ай бұрын
@@MartinBarker I think it comes more down to the Air Navigation Order and definitions. Have you tried looking at the BMAA website for schools?
@alanparkinson5495 ай бұрын
@@MartinBarker It really wasn't a "decision to deviate from globally accepted terminology." Before 1981 the Americans had started getting very keen on adding engines to their hang-gliders, they called them ultralights. The trend was beginning to spread in the UK, and the Civil Aviation Authority was getting very concerned about the safety of the rising numbers of unregulated (and therefore illegal) flying machines. They introduced a category of aircraft lighter than the existing light aircraft category and made aircraft registrations (e.g. G-MBCG - my machine's registration issued in 1981) compulsory. The term ultralight was already in use in the UK, so the name microlight was coined. At the time, many believed that these aircraft were legal, but the under Air Navigation Order, they were defined as powered aircraft. It was just that the Civil Aviation Authority chose not to prosecute and to allow the new type of leisure aviation to develop.
