ZONE WARM UP DRILLS | This Rad + Roller Derby Junkies

In this collabo with Artoo from RDJ.tv / rdjunkies we bring you 2 zone tracking warm up drills and some technique insights to get you moving and thinking in zone!
Zone theory is pretty exciting, I feel it expands both your thinking and your skillset. It doesn't replace the strength of tight formations but rather adds smart flexibility and range to your blocking game. You can build strategies on zone techniques that can be used pretty much anywhere in the game, use it to make runbacks more effective, and on an individual level, it strengthens your blocking and track awareness.

What position would fresh meat work on to play?

Hi, sorry I missed your comment until now. I recommend doing all the things when you're a rookie because it's too early to know where your right fit will be, and you want to pick up diverse skills to be versatile and powerful on the track. There are beginners in every role, so there isn't a particular role suited just for rookies. My team had me jamming the first couple years but I knew I wanted to be a pivot so I obsessively drilled blocking footwork and skills, and having a toolbox with both jammer and blocker skills meant I was confident wherever I needed to be in a moment. The same holds true for playing different positions (e.g. brace), I recommend building skills and confidence in every position...the way I did this was to spend time with one until I became proficient, and then I'd start drilling the skills for the next position and gradually put myself in that role more often. But if you do find the role that makes your heart sing early on, by all means go for it. Be where you feel joy and inspiration to continue mastering your skills.

Hey! Fresh meat and Co Ed team. We are USARs. There is zone ? I haven't been coached on any strategies , defensively or offensively at all. New to the sport. Where can I lear the fundamentals of team play and individual skills ??? I have played other teams sports and there is a strategy or plays to the sport. What is there for roller derby? Also, you are using your forearm to block. That is a blocking penalty right ??
