Great to see this! I was at Ft. Clayton in 72-73 and watched ships transit the canal many nights while on guard duty, dreaming about their exotic ports of call. Years later I became a merchant mariner and for 30 years sailed the world, transiting the Panama Canal quite a few times. Panama holds great memories...especially la Gruta Azul...

My grandfather was there for the opening of the Canal in 1914. He was a carpenter from Pittsburgh who worked on finishing the woodwork in the Administration Building. He liked it so much he brought his family, including my 4 year-old mother, down in about 1917-1918 to live there. He supervised the building of the 113 steps coming down from the Admin. Bldg! My mom grew up and married a Navy man. We lived in the CZ in the late 40's...Farfan Naval Radio Station. Thanks for the nice program!

I am Panamanian and all of Panama misses you guys and I speak for the popular people. Because with you the money goes directly to the people, I live in Chiriqui near the border with Costa Rica and everything is produced here and everything was sold in the Zone Canal, gardeners, housemaids, cooks , but now only politicians take money for their pockets. Before leaving Panama, 95% of workers were Panamanians. I always wish that people from the area of the Canal would have given us the opportunity to study in their schools, perform military service and train at their facilities and Panama would never have let them go. For me 1,999 it was a very sad day and 90% of Panamanians feel this way and very much space farmers in my province.
@johngoodwin48114 жыл бұрын
Hola JORGE, thank you for your kind words. I was stationed at Ft. Davis from 1981-1983. This was just after the riots that led to Carter giving the Canal Zone to the Panamanians. We were largely hated by many of the Panamanians at that time. A lot of people do not understand that Panama was actually a province of Colombia. Partly in exchange for allowing the U.S. to build the canal, we guaranteed to back a secession of Panama from Colombia. We had a treaty that gave us the right to control a strip of land along each side of the canal "in perpetuity". We built the canal after other countries, mainly France, had attempted to build it and failed. So it was not unreasonable that the U.S. should have been allowed to govern the Canal Zone even up to the present.

Yet because there was only one American radio station Rock and Roll only came on twice a day at different times as with other types of music such as country and western and classical. And television came on about 4 in the afternoon and went off at 10 at night. Shows with Imagine cocoa and Johnson & Johnson a father and son detective show... just things you would never have seen otherwise! If you lived on the army bases you be waiting for those shipments of Records to come in. @@sebastianguevara3615 Good morning! Yes, just the fact that Torijos was a dictator gave him the element of "fear", but as for the Americans in the Canal Zone he was only concerning and worrisome if you were off base or in the Panama area that wasn't under US control. It seemed we lived under a dual set of controls, meaning as a military member or family of a US military person you could expect to be at the most scolded if you did stupid things off base, but if you did something really bad they made you subject to just as harsh a punishment or sentence as you would receive as a national. And it would have been difficult for the US to intervene. But he was given soooooo much money and leniency from the US Govt that he was very friendly and engaging in social settings with the Americans. But I still have the idea to settle there before I'm too old. Loved it!

Our family was in Albrook AFB '70-'74. It was the best time IMO to be a kid in Panama and I spent a lot of time building forts in the nearby jungle down the hill past the GA building (even forgot some of my Dad's tools now and then...). Diablo Elementary was my school and I can still picture it pretty well (Mr. Andrews for 2nd grade and Mr. Moffett for 5th grade). One of the special things about it was growing up in a multi-cultural environment, between all of the military kids and then the Panamanians and locals out in the countryside. We didn't think about anyone's background or culture, just enjoyed each other's company and having fun together. There has always been a question I haven't been able to resolve - the local Panamanian broadcast TV had a closing song at the end of the day (remember when TV actually closed out each day?) - it was a polka and I can still hear it in my head when I think about it. I've never been able to find the name of the song to hear it again and while youtube has some uploads for TV from back then, that music was never captured or identified. Maybe someone knows the polka that played back then, every night at closing...
