Since 1989, Wildlife Canyon has been showcasing lesser known and endangered species of hoofstock from many parts of the world. After nearly a century and a half in the making - the canyon finally closed its paths. This episode isn't just a walk through, but rather a commemoration for being part of the zoo's history in many ways. Over the years, the Wildlife Canyon displayed babirusas, Mhorr gazelles, wild horses, oryxes, zebra duikers, and many hoof stock that are rarely found in zoos today. Including the Sumatran rhinoceros, a notable animal the zoo spent years in attempting to save this declining species. While the zoo said goodbye to these animals, they will make way for a brand new attraction in 2020. Watch, and join me in the only way you'll ever get to experience the Wildlife Canyon again.

Aidan Peers I think there should be some sort of a statue or a plaque at the zoo to commemorate the very much missed Sumatran rhinos that once called the Cincinnati zoo home.

I also pretty much lost interest in wildlife canyon once the last Sumatran rhino departed, but I think roo valley will be nice. Looking forward to the new home for the little blue penguins.

Nice, I'm a Forest technician from French Canada 🇨🇦! We have Granby Zoo here, they grouped raised almost 100K for Australia's hurt/burnt animals! I've been to the Calgarian, Alberta, they could do much better, I believe a giraffe newborn died there recently. Thank you from the animals who all need to alleviate their boredom.

At one time, the Bronx Zoo had a Sumatran Rhino at Zoo Center (the old Elephant House) on the side that now houses Komodo Dragons and Aldabra Tortoises. If I'm not mistaken, it left the Bronx to join the breeding program at the Cincinnati Zoo.

2 solid ideas that right away came to mind as additives could be larger tortoises as well in the walk through and a walk through tank for fly river turtles. Just side thoughts as I live in the cleveland area and never had the opportunity to visit these prestigious exhibits while they lasted....

I feel like it should be revamped based off of what I heard. If it is outdated then I’m all for the new walkthrough concept. And honestly I think there should be somewhat of a learning center about the Samatran Rhinos and all of what animals where kept in wildlife canyon.

They should give another try trying to breed Sumatran and Javan rhino in United state. Or build a large zoo sanctuary for both species in Sumatra

Too few of both species to transport them to the US. Another Sumatran rhino sanctuary is planned for Aceh province in the north and a center for Javan rhino's is underway already in Java I believe

Do you know what species of kangaroo will be in this exhibit? I think they should choose some of the more rare species rather than the red kangaroo and red-necked wallaby.

While a part of me is sad to see such a historic area that, even at its end, contained rare hoofstock be replaced by perhaps the most common idea in zoos, not much else could go in the location, and the zoo does seem to be trying to do it in a creative way (though I question the decision to have a large portion of the space be taken up by a beer garden). Maybe when the Elephants move to their new exhibit in 2025, their current habitat could become an exhibit for asian hoofstock, just to keep a piece of the zoos rich hoofstock history.

Speaking of which, the zoo released a map of the Elephant House renovations but it doesn't reveal much: mediad.publicbroadcasting.net/p/shared/npr/styles/x_large/nprshared/201806/618034993.jpg

Boooo! when I first came to the zoo they still had wildlife canyon, Then I was excited to see it again, But the next time I went, I was disappointed that they were transforming about 5 well loved species into simply just a long valley for kangaroo's. That is great and all, but I would prefer If they kept the species, and not let the fan's of the previous wildlife canyon be disappointed. I would much rather see exotic exciting animals, then see all the kangaroos be getting the spotlight. Thank you for this video, But I disagree strongly about the position the Cincinnati zoo has to offer for the future of Wildlife canyon
