The Red Panda (Ailurus Fulgens) is the largest extant representative of the superfamily Procyonoidea.

The red panda was previously classified in this family, but it is now classified in its own family, the Ailuridae, based on molecular biology studies.

@PandaPounce, I was actually talking about the superfamily Procyonoidea, which does actually group the red panda with the skunks, stink badgers, raccoons, bassarisks, coatis, olingos, olinguito, and kinkajou, which constitute the families Mephitidae, Procyonidae, and Nasuidae respectively, in fact, Procyonidae is now left with only the raccoons (genus Procyon) and bassarisks (genus Bassariscus), whereas the coatis, olingos, olinguito, and kinkajou are all relocated to a separate family that originated from South America, being the family Nasuidae, which is actually more closely related to Ailuridae than to Procyonidae, leaving Mephitidae to be the most basal extant family of the Procyonoidea superfamily, living members of the Procyonoidea superfamily are found only in North America, South America, and Eastern Asia.
