I tried Breakout Rooms today, and it worked like a charm. I could go from one group to the other by Joining their rooms to find out if they're doing fine. It's like in a physical classroom. I got them to watch a video first. After their discussion, I got them to write their thoughts in Padlet about how the movie began (Room 1) and ended (Room 2), and got them to comment or rate each others' work. Great stuff. The kids love it. Just sharing :-)
@ttvRussell4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for leaving another comment, Kevin. It can work really well like you describe. If you treat that part of a 'live' session like you would a physical classroom, where you would watch a video, then set up a task, group them and then monitor, joining breakout rooms in that way, should be effective. It's only when the task or instructions are not so clear, that students could be in a room, feeling clueless or not knowing what to do. Tell them that you going to join each of their rooms, too, if needed. I'm sure the kids love it when you just pop in and say something! Russell.

Great tips! Thanks!! I teach Italian to Dutch students (online at the moment) I got into a comic situation last week when I created two breakout rooms: the students in room 1 could clearly hear what the students in Room 2 were saying, but I wasn't aware of that until I finally entered the rooms after feeling very lonely in the darkness because I didn't know how to access the rooms. Tonight I will try to avoid that empty dark feeling
@ttvRussell3 жыл бұрын
Ester, that honestly does not make sense. Once you are in a breakout room, you are separate from other people and should only hear the people in your room. That is really odd. I have never heard of that before. Might be a good idea to let Zoom know.

One correction: at 4:33 the setting "Move all participants into breakout rooms automatically" doesn't mean whether you want to disable the automatic option. It means "do you want them to get a pop-up window that they have to click on in order to the join the breakout room or do you want to just move them to the breakout room without a pop-up?" I learned this in one of Zoom's Q&A meetings.
